This might be a tad premature for some, but for those who aren’t recruiting a great deal due to having settled squads, or for those like Doncaster, whom appear to be signing every Tom, Dick and Harry regardless of quality, it’ll be interesting to see where your respective squads are at - and perhaps most importantly, what you still need.

For us - Bradford City:

Goalkeepers:
Harry Lewis
Colin Doyle
Heath Richardson (youth)

Defenders:
Sam Stubbs
Matty Platt
Brad Halliday
Ash Taylor
Liam Ridehalgh
Timi Odusina
Cieran Kelly
Luke Hendrie
Finn Cousin-Dawson

Midfielders:
Ritchie Smallwood
Jamie Walker
Harry Chapman
Emmanuel Osedebe
Ryan East
Clarke Oduor

Strikers:
Andy Cook
Vadaine Oliver
Matt Derbyshire
Jake Young

Offered Alex Gilliead new terms but he’s yet to sign. Could be Notts bound.

Still a lot of work to be done, but best XI looks something like this

GK: Harry Lewis

RB: Brad Halliday
CB: Sam Stubbs
CB: Matt Platt/Ash Taylor
LB: Liam Ridehalgh

CM: Ritchie Smallwood
CM: ???

RW: ???
AM: Jamie Walker
LW: Harry Chapman

ST: Andy Cook

Expect us to bring in another 5-6 players.

Goalkeepers:
Sam Slocombe
Tiernan Brooks

Defenders:
Connell Rawlinson
Richard Brindley
Aden Baldwin
Kyle Cameron
Geraldo Bajrami

Wing backs:
Tobi Adebayo-Rowling
Adam Chicksen

Central midfielders:
John Bostock
Matty Palmer
Jim O’Brien

Tens/wingers:
Sam Austin
Will Randall
Jodi Jones

Strikers:
Macaulay Langstaff
Cerwyn Scott
David McGoldrick
Junior Morias

Still waiting on Aaron Nemane’s contract offer.

Team now probably be:

Slocombe
Rawlinson - Baldwin - Cameron
TAR - Palmer - Bostock - Chicksen
Austin - McGoldrick
Langstaff

Would be a competitive team IMO, but expect a new starting ‘keeper and right sided centre back to come in before the start, as well as a right wing back if Nemane leaves. Otherwise it’s just a bit of depth, will be some competition for Chicksen signing and another option in central midfield.

Randall, Jones, Morias (effectively a new signing) and Scott feels like a lot of goals and quality in attacking areas not in that strongest XI, but we don’t yet have that kind of depth elsewhere.

Expecting this McDonald fella to sign this week. Add some pace and we'll be close to the top three, I reckons.

Two signings that, on the face of it, have neither improved our weaknesses (Ridehalgh) or filled in any of the gaps. Big work to do if we even want to finish top 7 at this rate.

We're in Bradford's situation with having a pretty full squad already. Goalkeeper an obvious one to come in. Probably another midfielder somewhere along the line.

I reckon we're close to having two 11's so may be best to put it like that. Roughly like this- for e.g Hippolyte plays LWB and CM and others are quite versatile. We also mix formations up at times over the season.

Hinchliffe
Wright Horsfall Touray
Knoyle Croasdale Rydel
Collar Sarcevic
Olaofe Wootton

GK?
Byrne Lewis Pye
MSH DM? Hippolyte
Camps Evans
Madden Stretton

We've just signed Billy Chadwick who will probably go on loan unless he really impresses in pre-season.

Return loanees still in contract who's time is all probably done here (Crankshaw maybe got a chance of staying): Crankshaw, Ethan Ross, Scott Quigley and Ben Barclay.

Collar has been linked to a big money Championship move. Madden and Sarcevic are high earners with one years left and not sure we'll offer anymore so it's possible they could be tempted away if they get better offers. If any of these happen, we'll obviously be active in replacing.

Some youth players in the squad too but unlikely to feature at all, and probably heading out on loan.

Our starting XI currently is probably

Barnett RWB

Tozer CB
Hayden CB
O'Connell CB

Mendy LWB

O'Connor DM
Cannon CM
Lee CM

Mullin CF
Palmer CF

Cases to be made for a few others to be starting (Forde, Tunnicliffe, Jones, Dalby especially)

I genuinely don't know what Hurst is working towards in terms of system. I'd imagine he wants a squad of around 22 that can play a variety of ways and he'll tinker and adapt us depending on who we're playing.

GK
None

Defence
Luke Waterfall
Niall Maher
Toby Mullarkey
Michee Efete
The Rubbish Glennon
Danny Amos

Midfield
Harry Clifton
Gavan Holohan
Alex Hunt
Kieran Green
Evan Khouri

Attack
Danny Rose
Danilo Orsi
Otis Khan
Abo Eisa
Donovan Wilson

In terms of remaining incomings I think it'll be two keepers, a centre back, a midfielder, a big man type striker, a wingery or in the hole type attacker and maybe another right back. If we get some quality coming in then we'll be decent. The core of the squad is in place and it's solid if a little unspectacular.

If we were to play tomorrow I'd hazard a guess that the lineup would be something like this but I'm probably a few players off being truly accurate...

GK - Shaun Pearson
RB - Efete
CB - Waterfall
CB - Maher
LB - Glennon
CM - Green
CM - Clifton
CM - Hunt
LW - Eisa
ST - Rose
RW - Khan

...Rose and the wide players will definitely need a big man of some sort in the squad, as I don't think Rose and two nippy wingers is a long term solution. I don't see Hurst giving Orsi much of a crack either. A top tier CM would really elevate those midfield options from solidly decent to good enough for a push.

We've been playing a 5 at the back system for the last 3 years, and my guess at that starting 11 at the moment would be:

MacGillivray
Norman, O'Hora, Tucker, Lewington, Harvie
Gilbey, Devoy
Leko, Eisa, Grant

Though I think Graham Alexander prefers a 4 at the back, so maybe it will look something more like:

MacGillivray
Norman, O'Hora, Lewington, Harvie
Gilbey, Robson, Devoy
Leko, Eisa, Grant

Had no idea you had Ethan Robson. How's he done for you?

Was really good in the first half of 21/22 and got recalled from his loan because Blackpool needed the cover. Last season though he barely got a sniff, I don't think Jackson rated him.

Hopefully this season he can really kick on, though I feel like I'm saying that about most of that squad, there's not many of them that should be league 2 players it was just a calamity of failures that got us relegated.

Still waiting on contracts to be signed for a lot of players.

First year pros Zak Kempster-Down, Owen Lunt and Max Woodcock will all sign. I expect Lewis Billington and Charlie Finney to extend their stays at the club too.

Dan Agyei and Tariq Uwakwe still have contract offers on the table but I expect both of them to leave. We'll also get a small fee if Uwakwe was to leave.

Starting XI:

Davies

Adebisi - Offord - O'Riordan - Williams

Thomas - Colkett - Tabiner

Nevitt - Baker-Richardson - Long

With the signing of Davies sorting us out between the sticks, we need a starting RB, an experienced CB, an experienced CM, a loanee CM, a winger (2 if Holicek isn't ready yet) and a striker at the bare minimum should Agyei leave. Possibly another LB too but can see Charlie Finney filling in that role in the short term.

Overall not the best, a lot depends on whether we can get more out of players like Matty Stevens or Reece Brown if they stay. We need to improve in virtually every area, far too much dross under contract.

Probably our best starting xi right now -

Aramide Oteh. Still speaking about a contract. Really a forward but spent the later part of the season working his socks off for the team at left midfield. Hero of the escape from relegation.

Notes.
Addai started as a back up but got into the team after Morris was criminally sent to Gillingham and Balcombe got injured. Scared the crap out of all of us and liked to watch shots going in but gradually improved over the season. Still need at least one other keeper.

If Omole is fit again we are fine for centre backs and full backs. Though Conroy and Lynch spent a lot of the season injured...3 of 4 injured a lot...maybe 1 more.

Dear lord do we need some legs in midfield! Presuming Hess will move on and all the rest all wingers or ball players (except Roles, who I'm not sure is a footballer).

Presuming Appiah will leave so need some forwards. An actual back to goal centre forward would be nice.

We’re still short of a central midfielder and a couple of defenders - possibly a left-back, but we were playing with wing-backs towards the end of the season and wouldn’t be surprised to see Whitfield out there like he was on the last day of the season. Equally, wouldn’t be surprised to see him as a supporting striker.

For me I would change Senior for Maxwell at least at the start of the season. I think Biggins also starts instead of one of the new lads in midfield and have Roberts on the other side inside of Miller and have Molyneux on the right.

That’s fair enough, like I said it’s anyone’s guess at the minute. I’m still expecting casualties in pre season of those who were here last season so it wouldn’t surprise me to see some more new faces

Actually a reasonably small squad still, especially considering Chambers, Clarke, Gbode and Walker won't start games at the current time. 16 starters with 3 or 4 still to add, still need some width and pace in forward areas, plus another left sided player. Defenders list is quite short, but we have versatility - RB could be any of Alexander, Wright or McKenzie, LB could be Clark, Alexander or McKenzie, and CB options are Ehmer, Masterson, Wright, McKenzie, Hawkins and even Williams/Dieng could play there in an emergency.

First 11 could be:

Glenn Morris

Robbie McKenzie - Connor Masterson - Max Ehmer - Max Clark

Shaun Williams - Tim Dieng

???? - George Lapslie - Jonny Williams

Alexander in for McKenIe and Dom Jeffries to fill the midfield spot.
Reckon there will be a few more yet though.

Following the signings of McDonald and Pattison, our midfield is looking hella stronger.

Just that allusive RW position needs filling now. If we could somehow tempt Tyreik Wright/Scott Banks back on loan, we’ll be in a really strong position.

Dan Agyei next please.

Bold = New signing

So we still need a few players. Backup goalie, a new RB so Joe Riley can be used in midfield, another central midfielder, two wingers and two strikers at the very least for me.

The main area left to strengthen is at the back. Goalkeeping coach Joe Murphy has been offered another deal as keeper, those itk think he's accepted but not been confirmed yet. Doubt he'll be a regular starter so 1 other keeper coming in either a season loan from a prem/Championship club, maybe with non-league loan stint behind them or a reasonably experienced and out of contract. As a former keeper himself, you'd hope Adkins will have a big part in recruiting here.
It seems likely O'Connor will revert from a midfield role to start as right full-back. Mikey Davies is a first year pro and Hockenhull got shipped out to non-league for the bulk of last season, while there are suggestions Bristow may be sold and Turnbull's apparently put in a transfer request. Even if all the others stay, still think another full-back and central defender needed.

Further up the park, probably need another player with some pace, as none in midfield and only Sunders up front have that quality.

Those with *s by their names are likely to be subject to offers and would expect Hemmings and one of Bristow/Hawkes to move on for a fee.

Formation is likely to be 442 4diamond2 or possibly 4312. Will have a better idea of who's likely to start after pre-season underway.
