Love watching Rooney strut around pretending to be Zidane, taking a breather after making each successful 8-yard pass against Malta, and still failing to influence the play in any way whatsoever. He is rubbish.
As a neutral I agree with you. I've said the same watching him for Utd. I just cannot see what he brings to a team.

So is this Southgate England manager for real? How do we reckon he'll fare if he stays in the hotseat come Russia?

I actually think we showed more promise than we ever did under Hodgson. We penetrated their defence (yes I know we should do this but thats not always how it is for England) plenty of times and if it wasn't for their keeper having a good game the scoreline would have reflected our superiority

We beat Germany in Berlin under Hodgson, and won 10 out of 10 in the last Euros qualifiers. Let's not rewrite history.

True, if only he had the guts to play the team that beat Germany in tournaments.

Southgate is another yes man bowing down to the FA.

Our style of play won't change it will remain as predictable as always, and if we do qualify we'll get found out again.

And the depressing cycle will carry on.

England did what they had too today and did it in a professional manner, if it wasn't for the Maltese keeper it could have been a cricket score. People are going off like it's San Marino we've beat 2-0, Malta have given Italy a close game in the last 12 months but yes I'm not denying they are a pretty poor side. Thought Henderson was quality, and we showed a bit more promise going forward rather than the infuriating 5 yard sideways and backwards passes. The back 4 did their job well but for me Wayne Rooney shouldn't be starting in midfield for England.

Good win for Northern Ireland tonight but a pretty disappointing night for Scotland rescuing a point late on against Lithuania.

Really? I thought it was the very epitome of an England 'pass it around glacially from side to side without ever looking like going anywhere' type performance.

But it's the type of game it's impossible to draw anything from, as is this whole qualifying campaign really.

Thomas Müller again with 2 goals. Seems that he has found his self-confidence again after the disappointing Euro.
Czech Republic with a very unusual tactic against us Not many nations are that brave to defend so wide in our half. But they don't have the players with great skills anymore so it was only a matter of time when they were outplayed.
Before the match the Czech Republic was seen as the main competitor in our group, now it is Northern Ireland.

Tuesday we'll meet them in Hannover. Welcome to Lower Saxony, Norn Iron!

The only significant change from the Germany game to the Russia game was Rooney coming back in for Henderson. A poor choice in most people's eyes, but let's not pretend there were radical differences.

First I read that you have a team that beat Germany in tournaments and the only team that had beaten Germany in a tournament was the `66 team. They are a bit old now or dead :D

Seriously: The team that beat us in March 2016 in Berlin was great and got even praise in Germany and 3 months later at the Euro it was again the same old team we knew in and out for its old time football. What has happened in these 3 months, that's one of the mysteries of football :bg:

England have won 14 qualifiers on the spin now and are unbeaten in the last 31 of them.

#Positives

Why the heck were we so narrow yesterday. Playing against a side with no interest in crossing halfway, why wouldn't you play with the most width you can to at least try moving things around.

Hey ho, job done, onto Slovenia I believe it is.

Because Southgate is a terrible manager?

Booed off the pitch by your own fans too, not good.
Quite right too, we only want endeavour which isn't too much to ask, but we didn't even get that. Worst performance in years.

And you'll probably still beat us at least once!

Decent second half from Georgia offensively, should have scored a few. Assumed Wales would run out easy winners after an early goal, but Georgia made them work for the draw.
