What's worse is that there's going to be a group stage too; one of which will be played at an U21 ground.

I hope our players kick the living shit out of these cosseted, little darlings until they run back to their privileged bubbles. I hope it's such a horrific experience that this grubby little experiment is shelved as the costs of treating the post traumatic stress caused by being kicked up in the air starts to outweigh any "benefits" .
Anybody and everybody associated with this needs to get in the fucking sea.

Massive contradictions going on. Only a few weeks back they were talking about revamping the football league to reduce fixture congestion and then decide to add a group stage to the JPT.

Madness.

Its almost as if there is some ulterior motive... oh.

For what its worth, prize money has been doubled for the competition.

I hope we play our academy side and pay the fine - that rule now must be under legal challenge now, considering a representative side is going to be completely different from the Saturday?

I'd be surprised if more than 4 of the 16 qualify for the L32.

What a joke. Its not a competition I have huge feelings for but what an awful sell-out to start letting in PL academy teams. Cant wait for the Man Utd V Arsenal reserve team trophy final at Wembley.

Who seriously thought this was a good idea? The FL teams voted it in knowing full well its the best chance of a trophy most of them will ever have!?

The Top 16 U21 teams in the country is as follows (in table order):

Manchester United, Sunderland, Everton, Manchester City, Chelsea, Southampton, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Reading, Leicester City, Middlesbrough, Norwich City, Derby County, Arsenal, Swansea City, Aston Villa

There are also a number of other Championship clubs that could potentially get into strife and relegated back to League 1 - would they get 2 teams in the competition?!

It mentions 16 Premier League U21 teams so assume the championship ones aren't included.

Or does it mean the U21 teams that are in their version of the premier league? Blades V Derby or 'Boro reserves if so, wonderful

The prospect of Watford U21s (who will have the same academy level as us next season) v Luton Town 1st XI is one that fills me of dread.

I hope there is a mass boycott of the competition by fans. Seriously, get gates as close to 0 as possible

This.

If we accept this and just attend these like any other game, they'll put these teams into the leagues next.

I'd actually like all clubs to put their youth teams out in these games. Surely they wouldn't dare fine us for this while these big clubs put their under 21 teams out.

If ever we've needed to stick together as fans of lower league clubs it is during this monstrosity. We should simply all turn our backs and snubbing the thing.

Personally, I have no desire in seeing our second team play a drab friendly against overpaid, Bentley driving teenagers with hundred pound haircuts and Big Ben sized wristwatches, backed by shirt wearing plastic fans from across our street who consider their local club as a laughing stock followed the clinically insane.

Sounds to me like it's the U21 teams. Which means we'll be in there.

What could be interesting if it is the top U21 teams and they continue with it, it could be quite possible that our senior side and U21 side could be eligible.. imagine if they drew each other.

As the leagues are apparently regional youd get each other in the groups

So as the "aim" is to develop the England team, presumably these U21 will be fined for fielding a weakened team if they don't consist of mainly English eligible players?

It would be a shame to deny them the development that playing in the Football League Trophy clearly will bring them. Especially when they play our youth team that need first team football to aid their development.

You'd probably win!

Our Under 21s were hopeless last season as we just played those between the Youth team and 1st team squad so they were either phyiscall too soft or lacked any experience.

Tbh the idea of it makes me sick to the stomach.

It's the beginning of the team for our clubs I think, that's it, done.

I hope that everyone kicks the shit out of the kids and nobody goes, how fucking weak of the clubs.

A £1m prize fund? Really? Rooney earns that in 3 weeks, I'd have expected £10payments to the clubs.

It's a sell out.

A can categorically state I'd rather chop off my knob with a rusty bread knife than go to one of those games

Boycott this shit. Shame on the honchos of those clubs that voted for this. Pompey and Accrington have already come out and said they voted against it.

We need to find out if bookings and suspensions only count in this completion and not carrying into league games. Or open season as its also known.
