The floodlights (1957?) is a big no no. Lots of games played under lights over the years, including the first FA Cup Tie in 1955. Once the Football League relented, Fratton Park was first to stage a floodlit league match - in February 1956.

it says "first to install floodlights" , we never had any lamps so couldn't turn them on .....

I've read great stories about teams painting the ball white before KO in order to help visibility. Took ages for Floodlit Football to get off the ground. FA dug in their heels for quite some time.

Isnt this where the tradition of playing games on Bank Holidays came from? As they had to squeeze games in before it got dark in the winter? Think a lot of winter games used to kick off earlier than 3 too for the same reason.

I know you've been honing your argumentative skills in the Flat Earth Thread but you won't wear me down. I've been here before. In my pre-Holker Street days, when I lived on the farm and had no transport, all the kids at school supported Man Ure, Liverpool or Spurs. One perverse kid, my best mate, "supported" Palace - and I was the only one who stuck up for Everton. I had all the cards, posters, the lot.

So I can say with confidence that:

1. Everton's 4 @ 185 ft pylons were only put up in 1957.
2. Arsenal had lights in the West Stand at Highbury in the 1930's but weren't allowed to use them for matches.
3. The Dell had full permanent floodlights in 1950
4. Even South Liverpool FC had permanent floodlights at Holly Park in 1949 - long before the pylons went up at Goodison.

My font of knowledge was Ken Rogers' "Goodison Glory."

"The first floodlit match at Goodison Park took place when Everton hosted Liverpool on 9 October 1957 in front of 58,771 spectators. Four pylons 185 feet (56 m) each with 36 lamps installed were installed behind each corner of the pitch, at the time they were tallest in the country. There was capacity for 18 more lamps per pylon if it was felt the brightness was insufficient for the game. Each bulb was a 1,500 watt tungsten bulb 15 inches in diameter and cost 25 shillings. It was recommended that the club made a habit of changing them after three to four seasons to save the club performing intermittent repairs. MANWEB installed a transformer sub-station to cope with the 6,000 volt-load."

Teams used to play on Christmas Day as well as Boxing Day. Great fun. Raymond Verheijen would have a meltdown if he knew what clubs were up to in those days.

There were no "international weekends", teams just played without their internationals, and there were no European Cup ties and no League Cup. So fixtures just about fit in...

It's definitely a thing, it's basically all rounds after the qualifying rounds have finished. I've heard it mentioned hundreds of times every season..

We are only a year younger than Marlow and Maidenhead, so even taking into account all rounds we have one of the worst records in that regard.

Lots of early football clubs arose in London and down the Thames. Most of the clubs in the early FA Cups were from London and the surrounding area. Queens Park (from Glasgow) entered a few times and could have won it but had to forfeit a replay in the semi final as they couldn't afford to travel back down for it.

Marlow once reached an FA Cup semi final.
