Still work to do r.e. depth in full back positions, possibly a wide player and a central midfielder with the bit of physicality to help out a small looking midfield but they're areas that will probably be filled closer to deadline day.

Cowley tried to sign both Walker and Grant on loan last season with Grant joining Walker in January at Mansfield because he was there.

He never really got going. Joined us, then needed an operation which saw him out for 6 weeks. Curtis and Lowe were bang on form, so he was restricted to cup games. Scored a few dramatic late goals, but never got going to be honest. Got recalled in Jan by Villa as he wasn't playing much here. Obviously got ability, played a few times for Villa at the end of the season.

Rumours we might take a punt on him on loan.

Not exactly a stellar signing but it's an option.

Hopefully if he does well then Villa sell him to us for fuck all like they did with Robinson & Johnson.

Yes, I agree with Nelson. Was unlucky with us but looked a good prospect. When he was fit he was banging on the door of the first team but Curtis and Lowe were flying at the time. He was very useful to bring on for the last 10 and usually made something happen. We wanted to keep him for the whole season but Villa recalled him in January, probably due to lack of game time.

Yeah, think he featured in the play-offs a bit, played against us a season or two ago and looked very good but think he stalled a bit last season, sounds like injuries played a part.

Confirmed, we've signed 22 yo centre half Elliott Moore on a 3 year contract for an undisclosed fee from Leicester. He's a big lad at 6 ft 5.

So our centre back partnership with 2 could be Moore Dickie. With 3 it could be Moore Long Dickie. Then when you chuck in Ruffels....

No exaggeration to say when he left us for Charlton he was probably one of the top 3 attacking midfielders in the league.

Probably dropped down the rankings since then, but if he can get the kind of form back that he had with us again, he'll be a cracking signing.

What the others said is bang on really, only thing I’d add is that I think he’d have been excellent if he’d had a proper starting run, he just happened to be competing with Lowe and Curtis who were both on fire early on. I’m sure he’ll be a good signing for you!

He got injured in his first or second game iirc, much like Tareiq Holmes-Dennis. I remember thinking he looked pretty good though!

So after Anton Ferdinand and then Michael Turner it looks like Southend can't keep away from an ageing ex-Premier league defender - seems Liam Ridgewell is going to sign. He was seen in Southend and now half the current squad have started following him on twitter.
We better learn from past mistakes though and only give him a year contract, Ferdinand and Turner were fantastic 1st season and then broke down and totally looked their age the next.

In fairness, Reeves only came in to train with us and keep fit, and has come out and said that this deal is as much of a surprise to him as it is the club.
