FRANCE 1938 (vs England 1966)

Rp6c97i.jpg

The 1938 Coupe de Monde World Cup poster was designed by one Henri Desmé, whose logo kinda looks like a stylised cock 'n' balls if you ask me.

His World Cup poster that now features in this World Cup Posters World Cup features the moon from the 1962 Chile World Cup poster reimagined as a Paris-destroying mega-boulder held in place by the foot of a massive twat.

If the last World Cup poster featured a Gallic phallic element, and it does, this World Cup poster takes it to a new level with a mascot actually named after a World Cup penis.

Despite that, the England 1966 World Cup poster does lose points for not even having an Ingurrrlaaaand flag on it - which is an absolute facking liberty mate - although it could be rescued if that Chile World Cup poster moon / France World Cup poster mega-boulder does the decent thing and lands on that fucking lion and squashes him once and for all.

BRASIL 1950 (vs Italy 1934)

mA9mTec.jpg

Has there ever been a more memorable World Cup poster than the World Cup poster from the World Cup in Brasil in 1950?

Probably, yes. But it's still a decent effort. The multinational sock features such World Cup legends as Cuba, the UK, a two-year-old Israel, and whatever that one is below Belgium.

The Italy 1934 World Cup poster is from the second best World Cup to ever be held in Italy, after the goalfest we know and love as the World Cup Italia 90.

It was designed by Gino Boccasile, who went on to make like racist and antisemitic posters and stuff for the baddies in World War II. FFS, Gino. Whether you think his post-World Cup poster work should halt is progress in the World Cup Poster World Cup is your prerogative.

MEXICO 1970 (vs Switzerland 1954)

t0tIrx4.jpg

The World Cup poster for Mexico 1970 broke the mould of all previous World Cup posters by not being a poster for a World Cup but actually for a "IX football world championship".

Coming out in hot pink and black, it looks a bit like a logo for if there was a Soccerdroid faction in Transformers or summat and is also probably kinda annoying for some people BUT NOT ME how it's not even centred properly I MEAN LOOK HOW CLOSE THE WORLD CUP BALL IS TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE WORLD CUP POSTER.

SWITZERLAND 1954 (vs Mexico 1970)

Ak0JWEU.jpg

Switzerland 1954's World Cup poster was well ahead of its time, featuring as it did a dude dressed like Ad-Rock in the Beastie Boy's smash hit "Intergalactic" video diving beneath a citrus flavoured Death Star.

Looking at that scene from the perspective of a moth attracted by the celestial light but about to be caught in a net is a lovely touch too often neglected by modern day World Cup poster artists.

Brasil 1950 had a tough break there.

Switzerland's was a pleasant surprise. I quite like Russia's too. Getting in on the hipster retro style might have been predictable, but it was an effective way to ensure they compete in this competition.

Had to vote against England on this one to. The lions a bit shit isn't it?

I heard that was a major consideration when they were designing it.

Normally, I wouldn't vote for a poster of a guy who made (later) racist and antisemitic posters and the World Cup 1934 is also a "dubious" one (like 1978 in Military Junta Argentina) but....and that's a big but: Germany finished 3rd in 1934 and wasn't allowed to participate in 1950. So, fuck off 1950 (although I like it that Brazil couldn't win its home World Cup like 2014 :D )

btw: The guy on the poster has weird legs and the crest on his shirt is that a combination of Switzerland and Sweden? Anyway, I still vote for it

So, Italy 1934 for me.

The others I voted for (I know nobody is interested but I'll give it anyway):

England 1966
: Epic World Cup with a legendary Final, wins of course against 1938 where Germany participated in a Greater Germany Team with our Austrian "brothers" and failed. And I like World Cup Willie way more than the "Tottenham Hotspur" Cock-style of 1938

Mexico 1970: My first ever World Cup I could watch (7 1/2 years old and I don't remember much of it but my HSV-Idol Uwe Seeler played in it...and made his legendary back header goal against England for the 2-2 and then the Bomber himself, Gerd Müller, with the 3-2 in extra time. Franz Beckenbauer played with a broken arm.....Heroes, all of them, for us kids

Sorry, for getting a bit sentimental here. I know I should only vote for the posters and shut my mouth about the World Cup itself. ;)

The 1978 World Cup was the first one where a penalty shoot-out could decide a drawn match AET. None were needed though. Not until 4 years later as it happened. What are the chances!

The fair play award at Mexico '70 was somehow won by Peru. Would never happen nowadays, what with everything they get up to off the field.

The average goals per World Cup match dropped to 2.78 at the 1962 World Cup, the first time it had ever been below 3 in World Cup history. It has not been above 3 since. Thanks, Chile World Cup. Thanks.

Italia 90 is the only World Cup in World Cup history where it's the law that you have to use the native tongue and abbreviated version of the year to describe it.
