After an interesting question on a thread in another sub-forum.....

Why do you support who you support?

For me, I was born near Wolverhampton and then spent the next three years living in Newhampton Road just a few hundred yards from the Molineux. Of course the world was all black and white in those days. My dad used to take me as a baby and toddler to games because I was an irritating git even then, and it gave my mum some peace and quiet. Been a Wolves supporter ever since.

But no, I never went to Chorley. Although I went to a few other tragic games that season, including losing 2-1 at home to Southend. And to Darlington. Think that was the same season.

because I support my local team, when half my mates were pretending they loved their Arsenals and Liverpools whilst living on my street in LEEDS I was sticking to my morals going to games locally, yeah poor little Rupert from number 22 wasn't going to Arsenal much but atleast they were winning stuff 1990 etc................ although my time would come in 1992 where I could bury the little c*** face in some mud

support local football!

I understand people move etc this is for the ones that have already been in their teams vicinity forever

We welcome you with open arms to the Molineux faithful.

I had the (mis)fortune of being born in Southwark to a pair of Millwall season ticket holders.

In the blood.
Born and bred In Sheffield, your either Blue or red, my family being Owls going back at least to my great grandfather it was a no brainer for me.
Luckily enough they happen to be Sheffield's best club and most of my mates are Owls too.

You know the drill, if the whole family support one team, you either conform or look for a new home....difficult to hear when you are 4 though

Living in Sheffield when you go to school, people you meet for the first time say “Are you a Unitedite or a Wednesdayite”? In them days it never entered your head to support a Man Utd or Liverpool and to be fair 90% of the white school kids were Blades or Owls. Although many of the Pakistani boys supported Liverpool.

One uncle took me to Bramall Lane to see United in 75, another took me to Hillsboro to see Wednesday in 76.

I had free choice and simply choose the better, more fashionable team, at the time.
In the 70’s United were the dominant force in Sheffield and it was one of Wednesdays worse decades in their history.

Also most kids at school seemed to support United, 60/40 split and I prefered Bramall Lane because Hillsborough didn’t even have a roof on their Kop and the most well known stars of Sheffield football were Tony Currie and Alan Woodward, so it was an easy decision.

Didn’t take long for the tide to turn though, as Wednesday went on to dominate the 80’s and early 90’s.

Dad started taking me when I was knee high in late 1960s, I was hooked from very start.

Though born in Ireland he lived in Sheffield for a few years before meeting mother who was born and bread Sheffield with many Wednesdayites in family.

Despite living in Rotherham I don't feel any connection with RUFC and just laugh at them who moan about all Wednesday fans living in town.

As most have said, I never had a choice. Had a season ticket from 2 years old which just seems like child cruelty to be quite honest.

Mates at school mid sixties. Started going to Bramall Lane with schoolmates. Support more or less evenly split at school between Blades and Owls with perhaps a slight numerical advantage for the Blades. Family had no influence on decision

Salford born and bred, but my grandad went to Bristol for a meeting once and after seeing them on TV against Wycombe in 1995, I was hooked. Some people scold me for not supporting my local team and being a gloryhunter, not even being able to point to Bristol on a map but I don't give a shit. Most of my classmates supported the likes of Reading and Hull, with only a few watching Man City or United anyway. One day I'll hopefully make it there for a game.

Similar to S74Blade, a mate at school got me hooked. I was never going to be passed a team down from my parents, Dads an original Chelsea skinhead turned Forest 'fan' after moving up here for my mum and she's a glory hunting Liverpool fan so I'm pretty thankful to god or whoever it was that guided me down this path

Should have been a Chesterfield or Mansfield fan if we're going off of local teams.

Born in Lancashire so it wasn't for local reasons (my local team was Burnley back then). Support Wolves through my dad who took me from a very young age, and bought me and my brother our first season tickets for our 5th birthday. I actually remember wanting to be a Burnley fan since all of my mates at school were, although my dad would have probably disowned me. I think the thing that attached me to Wolves were our unique gold and black colours.

Herts, my dad went to that Chorley game... he was serving in Germany at the time and flew over to Luton airport on the Friday and drove up... What a waste of time and money that turned out to be.

My dad fucked off when I was two months old, and thank god, because I may have been a wolves fan if he didn't. Most of his family are villa though. My grandad basically took over and he was a huge villa fan from Erdington who moved to Staffordshire during the war. He would go home and away everyweek, and started taking me in the 89/90 season. I had no other choice really, and there were plenty of villa fans around anyway. Would spend hours sat in our loft looking at all his programmes dating back to the late 40s. Loved listening to his and my uncles stories from following the villa away during the 70s and 80s.

What a horrible thought it must have been, god forbid you could have supported a title winning team this season.
Macclesfield won the National League too. There is only one league I'd really celebrate us winning. It will look ok on your honours list though :)

I grew up in a town exactly midway between Bristol and Swindon and had no affiliation to either club. My very first live game was Swindon v Bristol Rovers when I was 14. Ended up 2-2. Chose Swindon.

We won the League Cup at Wembley the very next season!

It's an odd story for me.
Mum was a Kentish town girl, her parents heading West in the 50's looking for work. Dad is a Northern Irish paddy, the youngest of 7, who was brought to the mainland by his eldest brother to avoid the troubles. He started,as they all do, in Liverpool, spent time in Coventry and London but settled in Bristol where he met my dearly departed mum.
My elder brother and sister are English born but I 'arrived' on a trip 'back home' for dad so am Northern Irish by birth but was in Bristol by the time I was 2 weeks old.
Dad took me to City when I was a kid (mid 70's) and my uncle took me to the gas alternative weeks. Given I grew up in a staunch gas area, I should be a gashead , without doubt but the first time my old man took me to an evening match at the Gate (Pompey, April 1976), he was so happy (we were promoted that night to what is now the Prem), I was City!
Unfortunately, the best City side I will EVER see is the first City side I saw but I will always be a red.

Born in Birmingham, all my family where Bluenoses but I never became one, despite been taken to games before I could drive. I then moved away 19 years ago, after a few years of ground hopping and watching any team just for a fix.
Moved up north of Lichfield to Barton ( hence my username ) and fancied a game on a Saturday afternoon. Ended up watching burton at the old ground, and the rest is history. Saw us rise through the leagues.
So - in essence had I not bought a house and moved away from Sutton ( massive villa area ) I would have probably been a bluenose by association.

Because we won the league.

Through my dad, he took me to my first game when I was 4 and the rest is history. Didn't get a season ticket til 2009 so I missed all the years we were half decent though.

I remember my first trip to Ewood.. we got spanked 5-1 on our first game back in the PL. Could have been 10-1 in all honesty it was awful.. Steffen Iversen scored a nice goal for us though.

Got into football during Euro 96. Came back from school later that year with an Arsenal shirt a mate had lent me (I grew up in Hackney). Stepdad took it off me, marched to my mate’s house to give it back and took me to my first Millwall game that weekend. Took a couple of seasons for me to get into it, but two games stick out as catalysts for my full conversion: the AWS final loss to wigan at Wembley in ‘99, and turning a 2-1 defeat into a 3-2 victory in injury time on New Year’s Eve. I believe David Livermore’s winner was the last British goal of the millennium.
