After the fourth round tie between Liverpool and WBA yesterday, it's become a bit of a hot potato. All in all, I think it worked well yesterday and it ensured that several contentious decisions were eventually resolved correctly.

Works for me.

Why is it only being used for some games though?

Watching our highlights from yesterday and it looks like we had two penalties ignored by the officials.

I guess it's just while they test it out and at games on TV but yes will have to be used everywhere eventually.

And only when the ref feels he need to - not when told to by players and managers unless there is going to be an appeal type system involved.

Do you think a tennis-type "referral allocation" should be allowed..? I'm not so sure.

* How many would each team be allowed? One? Two? One in each half?

* Who would be the person to decide when a referral is made? The on-field captain..? The Manager..? A nominated deputy if the manager has been banished to the stand..?

* Might not referrals be used in a tactical way? eg: to waste time or break up play late in the game if a winning team still has a referral or two in hand.?

* If a team has used up its allocation and the ref then makes a total howler, managers would complain that they need unlimited referrals "Because the system as it is doesn't work."

I think it should be kept at the Referee's discretion. I believe that referees are honest men who truly want to make the right calls and can be trusted to use the system to achieve a fair outcome. That's more than can be said for managers and players who are only interested in winning the match by whatever means, fair or foul, at their disposal.

Would a club captain or manager attempt to exploit the system for their own advantage..? You betcha.

Well they soon want to use it for anything slightly contentious!

Maybe one or two but then that won't be enough for some managers and in the heat of the moment some could use it to break up play or get in the head of the officials.

Ofcourse refs will make mistakes as anyone can but as you say they don't do it on purpose but can be influenced I feel.

Infact most of the arguements for it seem to stem from around fans of smaller teams like us thinking it will stop the big team "bias" as they won't be able to "control" the officials..

I'm not aware of any plans by the footballing authorities to extend the parameters of video referral. And I'm not sure exactly where they could be extended to. I don't think I'd want to see more use of video referral unless it was absolutely necessary, and even then, it would have to be done in such a way that didn't affect the flow of the play. Nobody wants to see a match where the game becomes completely fractured.

VAR is meant to augment fair decision making, not overrun it.

Television is divided on the issue. Some commentators see it as a good thing whereas pundits (mostly former players) are mostly intensely hostile.

TV wants a "spectacle" in every match and frankly, doesn't give a rats arse whether the game achieves a fair outcome or not. Their interest lies solely in selling entertainment to their subscribers. It's business.

I often feel that many pundits (The execrable Robbie Savage is the worst) use their position in front of a camera as an excuse to settle old scores with officialdom. Not one referee in particular because all those who sent him off or saw through his "loveable rogue" shtick and didn't let him get away with his nasty, snidey on field behaviour because all those have now retired. But he never misses an opportunity to cast referees as being smug, power mad jobsworths...... to him, they're still the enemy.

VAR is just an extension of the authority he clearly despises.

So I think we should ignore pundits, or at least, those who present no rational argument other than "It's crazy" or "It was only his knee that was offside." They miss the point, and not entirely just because they're stupid, but because some, I believe, are still carrying old grudges.

Life is hard, Robbie. It's even harder when you're stupid.

The main bugbear for pundits and fans seems to be the fact its not shown up on the big screen in flashy bright colours with loud music or signals from th officials (what would happen at Anfield or Old Trafford?)

;)

In other words a lack of communication...

Those wiggly lines did look a bit odd though but apparently that isn't what the officials saw - BT showed some straighter ones too.

Just as well Man U won though otherwise we'd be seeing headlines about another Jose rant this morning!

The Huddersfield manager didn't seem that fussed either way despite the decision going for his side but then he probably didn't really mind going out of the cup with a plucky performance.

which showed Mata was actually level therefore NOT offside but it was still given as offside. Unbelievable imo. Personally I would only use the system for 'Was the ball over the goal line or not' incidents.

I think VARs pretty redundant. The offside rule should either be scrapped or rewritten so that it only applies if there is a substantial competitive advantage, as it's pretty ridiculous to penalise players for having a fraction of a kneecap further forward than the last defender. And the whole 'he had a right to go down' thing for penalities makes them such a farce that it doesn't really matter whether you use VAR or not.

Is there a danger it will be over-used and officials become too reliant on VAR?

If they bring it in every week you can just see it being used for one incident one week and then not so the next which will lead to managers and players complaining much as they do now or appealing for it to be used.

I do think it can work and of course there will be issues early on but you are going to have to ground rules as to what exactly VAR can and cannot be used for.
