Just had my car insurance renewal from Swinton. £405, up from £243 last year. Used comparison site and Swinton came up at £245. Called them to ask why their renewal was £160 more than their online price. Flustered muttering about possible discounts and different cover but they wouldn't budge on the price.

I've tried that in the past - as you work through the online process they won't let you do it when it emerges that it's a renewal (ie you already have a policy with them).

For some years, I went with Swinton and AN Other (usually Co-op or Saga) on alternate years because of this approach. Recently Saga have seen the light and are not banging up the price for renewals compared to new policies. Most others still seem to.

I had this with Morethan a couple of years ago. When I rang them up they came up with a new offer only slightly higher than the comparison site quote. This year their offer was more or less the same as the comparison site price.
