My City lives under a Labour Mayor. On the map it is red and proud. They will oversee ever deepening cuts, the loss of our local music venues and an unaffordable housing bubble.

How are labour spooling your local area?

That's such a weak excuse Aber I expected better of you. "The Tories made us do it"

what else are you supposed to do - stop giving care to the elderly so some music venues can stay open?

It has nothing to do with the budget set aside for the care sector. The challenges facing local venues are new housing developments that then try to push out the scenes that were there a long time before they moved in. If they get their own way we will be left will souless housing developments and shite restaurants in container ships.

What our local labour council should have done is stood up for it citizens. Not cut everything without a whimper. And then the Mayor has the audacity to call a protest months after telling us that we were being unreasonable.

The symbolic inefficiency of Labour is a problem that has to be overcome, but I'm not sure how those occupying the broad left might develop a common language around it that we can use to discuss the failures of neoliberalism and the problems of social democracy, as well as workable responses to those issues. Not everyone in Labour wants the same thing, that much is obvious. Is it possible to keep a healthy distance from the Labour Party, to prevent us from uncritically following the line of the leadership and the PLP? Do we abandon the Labour Party even if it also means abandoning the imperfect, but long overdue, movement for greater institutional democracy?

I suppose I would ask anyone who thinks Labour are beyond the moral pail whether those ethical considerations yield anything in return. What and where is the nascent, energetic political movement that we fall back into? How do we build a collective politics that combines resistance with a potential to scale proportionally across the country? I would pose a different problematic to Labour Party members (myself included): what lies beyond Westminster, what lies beyond the Labour Party in its current form? Does this movement have the appetite for an active role in shaping its own destiny, or is this a return to a repressed past? A desperate hope that these questions will be answered for us. A fetishism of the electoral process.

Antimonies abound.

The cuts are necessary. We don't have to like it, in order to accept it.
