There isn't a team out there who don't do it - you even see and hear about such stuff with kids on a Saturday/Sunday morning!

An manager who says their team doesn't really is deluded.

Dario Gradi's teams honestly never did it tbf.

He just threatened to sue referees after the game instead (true story, man).

How about this diamond from Mike Newell back in the days when he was manager of Luton Town.

Apparently, female assistant referee Amy Rayner didn't flag to give Luton a penalty and that was the reason Luton lost. Yeah, Mike.... it's always a woman's fault, eh..? Nothing to do with the male referee who also waved away the penalty appeal.

'She should not be here,' Newell said. 'I know that sounds sexist, but I am sexist, so I am not going to be anything other than that. We have a problem in this country with political correctness, and bringing women into the game is not the way to improve refereeing and officialdom.'

He added: 'It is absolutely beyond belief. When do we reach a stage when all officials are women, then we are in trouble. It is bad enough with the incapable referees and linesmen we have, but if you start bringing in women, you have big problems. It is tokenism, for the politically correct idiots.'

The delusional part here is that he may have seriously believed he would keep his job after that particular rant.

The fool.

From what I recall, I don’t think that was the official reason he was sacked.

I think it was one of the straws that broke the camel's back. The official reason given was "Gross Misconduct" without naming any specific incident

Newell had ranted on a number of occasions, calling the Chairman incompetent, criticising decisions to sell players, insulting foreign players and criticising the "bung" culture.

Perhaps it was the accumulation of outbursts which did for him, but from a woman's point of view, seeing a man like Newell get the big welly after the things he said about women was IMMENSELY satisfying.

Not wishing to defend Newell in this instance but by my recollection, the official in question did have an absolute nightmare of a game. Genuinely an awful performance, hence why he was asked about it.

Having said that there was absolutely no need to bring her sex into it, and he was rightly widely lambasted from all sections and again righty punished for it.

When we have had that official in games since I think she has actually been one of the best around to be honest!

At the time there were rumours of alcoholism going around and that season was full of bizarre interviews from him that led to his eventual sacking. That was a really weird time at the club in general really, the first of many as it turned out.

Mike Newell was assisting with the coaching of our first team last season. One game he was sat in the dugout on crutches with his leg in a cast. I asked him what he'd done expecting it to be a football injury but he said he'd been pissed and fell down the stairs...
Soon after he disappeared from the club and his departure never announced or reason given.

Steve Evans claimed Accrington have spent more than them after their game on Tuesday. :eye:

Cotterill must the most overrated manager going!
Has he actually won anything since leaving Cheltenham?
Awful manager who somehow keeps getting jobs at clubs way above his ability, so fair play to him in that respect.

The man is a God to Cheltenham fans, and many gang off his every word even now.

He's a very good League 1/2 manager and can do a job at Championship level, but his style of football and tactics are too primitive to be successful any higher than lower Championship.

What he can do is motivate. Of the original Cheltenham team that got promoted in 1999, only one left for a higher team (Michael Duff) and the rest were pretty much cast-offs or experienced non-league journeymen. Cotterill's motivation is what got us up.

Where did he say that?

Just in his post-match interview, I follow Accrington’s chairman on Twitter and he noticed it.

He goes through the other promotion contenders having won and says something like “look at Accrington, they spent a lot in the summer, probably more than us” or something along those lines. Bizarre.

Cant remember her name but we had a female referee in the Conference and Rob Scott lost his shit with her once against Bath and got sent to the stands, funny thing was we won 6-0 and when this happened it was already 4 or 5 nil.
In his interview after the game he said summat along the lines of 'I'm just disappointed that a womans managed to get one over me'

He was given a permanent holiday the following season when he punched Nuneatons assistant manager in the face.

Got into a dispute with our assistant Gary Seward at one point as well. To out-bellend Seward took a monumental effort but that lanky twat Scott achieved it with consummate ease. :hail:

He's been passing comment on what others spend and claiming his team don't for as long as I can remember.
Claimed we spent 400,000 on Bostwick.
Can't wait to hear how much he'll claim we spent on Frecklington and how we're paying him.
Just cos they spend a fortune to sit players in stand the rest of us can't.

Since most of this thread is about managers who have played Luton, I wish to point out that Nathan Jones is right up there when it comes to spouting bullshit. Went on a massive rant when Curle suggested Luton had spent well in the summer as if he has somehow cobbled a squad together on a shoestring and wants credit for that.

Very true he does go off on one sometimes. He has got significantly better than last season I feel though, gives opposition credit a lot more when they beat us even if they play a style which he perhaps views as “lesser”. He’s a bit of a football snob like that I think. I think last season he might have had a right dig at the Cowley’s for instance for how they play and it does come out every now and then, especially around pitches!

I think his reaction to the budget stuff wasn’t the fact that he wants recognition for putting the squad together on a shoestring. More the fact that it’s all some opposition managers go on about. In that week we had just tonked Cambridge by a huge margin and instead of getting praise for being a good side, it was all “they spent loads of money”. He should just ignore it as it’s just opposition managers covering themselves and in reality it means nothing, but I can see why it needles him a little. He wants some recognition from his colleagues I think.

I don't think any Luton fan would deny Jonesy does talk the odd porky.

But he's not delusional.

Has it been most of his thread? I don't think it has - I just started it off, because I was bored of listening to some very strange managerial interviews this season.

Only embarrassing delusionial Lincoln fans in L2 would think this doesn’t apply to every single manager/club in English football.

Will someone pull them out before it’s too late??

Jones' rant after our game was brilliant. I don't recall any other manager ever moaning about the slope on our pitch, or bemoaning the fact that we celebrated like mad when we equalised.

Jack Lester's reasoning why Chesterfield's disallowed should have stood is amusing to say the least. There was an offside player right on our keeper, clearly if you're that close to the keeper you're part of the attack, so offside, simple enough. But the referee told Lester that their number 23 was offside, and Chesterfield don't have a number 23, so in Lester's view, clearly this means the referee just imagined some non-existent player in an offside position and not the more logical conclusion that there was a player but the referee got the number wrong. He comes back to it about three times in his post-match interview (granted probably before he's seen the footage), about they had a goal disallowed for a player that doesn't even exist being offside.

He also doesn't know why the linesman's getting involved in an offside decision.

I love Evans ability to wind everyone up by informing other teams of what they are spending.
