It doesn't get any bigger round these parts. 1st time we've gone to hillsborough since 2000 and expected to lose, a draw would be a cracking result for us and to be honest I think any Wednesday fan would take a draw despite being big favourites. A good crowd will be there despite the ridiculous prices, just hope I don't see the c*** doing that bouncing shit they do, will mean a clean sheet then for us.

This prediction is entirely from the heart
Sheff wed 1( hooper 12) v sheff utd 2 ( Donaldson 63, sharp 93).

Att 32,765 (2336 blades).

Hate the game mate..If I didn't have a season ticket I'd hide behind the sofa.
Its laughable listening to folk whitter on about current form, the respective squads, past history , yadayada yada..
It all goes outta the window, its devil take the hindmost and can make or break your week
A sell out with a few thousand empty seats eh?..bloody ludicrous.
I even used to get worried when it was the county cup game, which shows me age...I can remember Joicey getting a winner from miles out at your place...Mind...You did have John Hope in the net

As Wednesday have been victim to, in the 90s, and United in the 00s, it is not the team with the better squads or indeed managers it is who wants it most on the day.

Looking forward to this.

Don't think War and Peace rhymes mate...anyroad upwards....Most football fans are delusional to a certain extent.
Thats why you get fans from Arsenal to Accrinton singing "We're the finest football team the world has ever seen"
Being a Wednesday fan and not being slightly delusion simply makes you look at the stark reality doesn't it?...
Thats no way to follow football outside the top 6 or 7 sides.
Not gonna win owt soon, chance of actually NEVER gonna win owt, that goes for a vast majority of football sides in England...hence the odd delusional outburst .
You have Stoke and West brom supporters bemoaning the fact they finish halfway up the Prem, year in, year out...Thats how Wednesday fans would get after a couple of years...Thats how HTFC fans will get..Its how followers of most teams would get...
Viva delusion I say...

Normally I don't like these matches. Too much hassle and tension and it's not the same because these days the police severely restrict away fans at Steel City derbies, so the atmosphere isn't as good as what it could be.

However this season I'm really confident we'll put in a good (possibly impressive) performance playing some attractive passing football. Wednesday fans think any team that comes up from league 1 can't be that good, they think we must be a Dave Bassett/ Neil Warnock team of organised battlers with strong physical players. This couldn't be further from the truth.

However this team is now starting to find its feet and is starting to dominate matches just like it did last season. Our midfield is easily one of the best I've seen at BL in 40 years and we should have some good spells on Sunday where we outplay Wednesday just like Brentford did last week in the 1st half. It's up front where our problems lie, 5 out of 6 strikers are injured where as SW have (on paper) just about the best strike force in the division.

Of course Wednesday have more quality and strength in depth but we have the better team ethic.

Logic would suggest SW 2 SU 1 but the managers might play a big part. Wilder is a positive motivator/ leader of men, quick starter giving out clear instructions whereas Carvahal is more of a cautious over tactical coach where he's more likely to start slowly sussing out the opposition, then he usually gets SW to up the tempo in the 2nd half. Actually the key for SW is 'tempo". Wednesday need to start like they did against Forest, release the shackles, take risks and go for it.

But a strange fact over the last 30 years of Steel City derbies is the underdog has a much better win record than the favourite. It's become a cliche here that whoever is expected to win usually loses. United haven't drawn a match for over 20 games so we're definitely overdue a draw.

If I had to bet money I have a feeling it will end a 1-1 draw, which I'd take now.

Good post if a little skewed by Red and White tinted glasses.

How do you know you have a better team ethic?

It is supposition pure and simple, much like your post on the other forum where you claimed you had a better midfield than us :2thumb::2thumb::2thumb:

Yes it was, much like the Steel City Cup.

In the BIG derbies we've come out on top, Wembley, BDM, 2012 etc.

Pretty standard for us to lose big games. Wouldn't say the bdm was any bigger than loads of others though it just happens to be the most well known because of the scoreline and the day it was played on. 2012 was a shocker for us, a win there and we were up, never turned up.

BDM was a closer game than it looks on paper,
United lost it after Speight got carried off, Sabella was totally out of sorts.
Great crowd though, it was lashing down and there was a public transport strike, I walked from Gleadless valley and back, the walk back wasn't so bad though.
As for the comments about Wednesday not giving United credit for being in the Championship, I doubt thats the point of view of most Owls fans and it will not be the view of the management team.
Any team that comes up from League 1 with 100 points is not a "common all garden" football team.
The only manager I can remember making that sort of mistake was Bryan Robson when he said "Its just another game", don't believe he lasted long after that

BDM was big in that you were top or thereabouts and we were 6th with just two wins in seven, we ended up going up after a five year stint down there and you lot finished twelfth.

Not sure whether i'm looking forward to this or not. In a way i have missed them and in another i have been happy to see them in the lower league for years.

Will be a sell out, whatever that actually is these days it probably won't break 33,000 due to SYP.

Can't call which way it will go, we undoubtedly have more depth and talent but i think Wilder will have them fired up a lot more and with Billy Blunt probably back captaining them they've got a couple of lifelong blades that know exactly what it means to win this to motivate them, whereas we don't have a single player that has been involved in this fixture before.

Heart says 2-0 head says 1-1

Liam Palmer was on the bench for the 2-2 not to mention Bullen captaining us in a couple.

Regards "team ethic", what I mean is that individually I don't think we have any great players. Our players look quality but I genuinely believe if they joined another Championship team their form would dip. Individually Wednesday have much better quality. However our players have been given clear, almost formulaic instructions. We almost play the same team week in week out playing the same style. Therefore every player fully understands the tactics and knows the strengths and weaknesses of their colleagues.

Wednesday have strength in depth and plenty of options, so Carvahal is keen to change/ rest his players and adopt different tactics for different opposition. This can cause confusion and a lack of coherence.

Individually we're low Championship level but on Sunday you'll see similarities between us and Brentford and I'm confident we will have spells controlling possession playing a nice passing style.

Although I've just heard that one of our midfield trio (Coutts) is being investigated by the FA for a possible elbow against Norwich, so he could be given a retrospective red card which might mean he's suspended for Sunday.

If one of Coutts, Fleck and Duffy is missing, then we're not the same and I'd then put us as major underdogs, it would be damage limitation.

Boxing day WAS a massive match because it's proven to be a big turning point (water shed moment).

I was a boy in the 70's and had free choice. One uncle took me to Bramall Lane in 75 when we had Currie/ Woodward playing in front of 25K. Another uncle too me to Hillsboro in 76 when Wednesdays heros were Mick Prendergast and David Sunley playing in front of 13K, however because there was no roof on Wednesdays Kop the atmosphere always seemed poor, worse than BL.

Most kids at Sheffield schools seemed to support United and Wednesday were seen as a bit of a joke in the mid to late 70's. I actually used to feel a bit sorry for them and still remember the "save our Owls" campaign run by The Star in the 70's. So for me it was a really easy decision to support United over Wednesday, besides I also preferred red to blue.

In the 79-80 season United were one of the pre season favourites and were up near the top right up to Xmas getting bigger crowds than SW home and away. United had been undisputed top dogs in the city for 9 years but now they were playing each other and Blades were very confident, so it was a massive shock to the system to lose 0-4. Agree 0-4 wasn't a true reflection but SW deserved the win.

In the 2nd half of that season United hardly won another match where as it was a massive boost for Owls and their team gained promotion and went on to quickly gain promotion to the top flight with excellent crowds. They were getting 26K whereas we were averaging 12K, in the 80's anything over 20K was a great crowd.

Whereas in the 80's we quickly went into the 4th division. The tide had turned, everyone seemed to support Wednesday and it was almost embarrassing to admit you supported United.

Even when we had a few seasons in the PL in the 90's it was too late and our gates didn't rise that much. It took until the demise of SW in the 00's in combination with Warnocks success in 06 and 07 to persuade most of the kids in Sheffield to choose SU over SW. This is the only reason our current gates have held up well, hence why the success/ failure of your rivals DOES affect your own teams chances of success.

Just after the war Notts County were better supported than Forest averaging 35K gates but after decades of County struggles in conjunction with Forest success in Europe etc, its opened a gap so big that their historic rivalry has virtually died off because all kids in Nottingham now choose to support Forest, at least in Sheffield it's still generally 50/50.

My favourite Derby outside our own. I fancy Sheffield united to grab a win. Wouldn't mind going to this fixture one of the days.

Not sure about anyone else, but although united are a decent sized club, I've always considered Wednesday to be the bigger club regardless of what division they were in. I used to collect football shirts in my early teens, and I had a Wednesday shirt,I think it was the 93/94 away shirt. I even had a couple of Leeds shirts :animatedf:
