SY Police have announced last that they believe Friday nights are safer then Sunday lunchtime kickoffs. So this match being played Friday night is not because Sky Sports have all the power and can tell the police what to do?

Here’s the report

500 police officers drafted in to stop derby day violence with Sheffield United set to take on Sheffield Wednesday on a Friday night
  • Sheffield United host Sheffield Wednesday on Friday, January 12
  • South Yorkshire police made no objections were raised to the kick-off time
  • About 500 police officers will be deployed to keep order at Bramall Lane
  • There were fears the time would increase the risk of alcohol-fuelled disorder
About 500 police officers will be deployed to keep order after no objections were raised to a Friday night kick-off for the Sheffield derby a week on Friday.

Fears had been raised that the televised 7.45pm Championship clash at Bramall Lane would increase the risk of alcohol-fuelled disorder.

However, despite drafting in officers from other forces to help, police in South Yorkshire believe the late start will lower the risk of trouble by reducing time spent in the pub.

The last Sheffield derby, in September, kicked off on a Sunday lunchtime and police were dealing with football-related trouble across the city until 1am on Monday.

The number of officers on duty in Sheffield is likely to exceed the total patrolling Friday's Merseyside derby and is significantly higherthan deployments for recent Manchester derbies.

A police source said: ‘The number of officers is surprisingly high but it is right that hosting matches on Friday nights lowers the risk oftrouble.

‘What you tend to find with earlier kick-offs is that there is little trouble at the stadium but then people have the rest of the day to drink and reflect and you end up dealing with issues hours after matches have finished.’

United and Wednesday had not met for more than five years before the September clash at Hillsborough, which the visitors won 4-2.

Police made 11 arrests on the day and issued 35 dispersal orders to fans associated with risk groups. Several pubs closed early amid concerns they could be flashpoints for trouble.

Wednesday fans will be kept back after the game to reduce the risk of clashes outside the stadium. United currently sit in seventh place with managerless Wednesday down in 16th.

It is not the first time this season that South Yorkshire Police have turned to other forces for help.

When Wednesday entertained Leeds United at Hillsborough in October, officers from three other forces were drafted in to assist.

The stance by police in Sheffield on kick-off times is likely to be welcomed by Premier League clubs.

Friday night matches were introduced into the top flight last season and, despite early concerns, most have passed off without major incident.

Regards the match.

Even during our recent poor run we’ve still played quite well.
I can almost guarantee we’ll play good attacking football and will create chances.

However as seen in recent matches at BL playing well doesn’t mean we’ll win.

A common trend in the Steel City derbies is who ever is the underdog tends to usually win.

This time Wednesday are the underdogs, they’ve recently played poorly with little desire or organisation
But away from home they’ve pulled out the odd good performance and impressive result, so who knows.
Also managers tend to get a positive reaction (effort wise) in their first match.

It’s going to be a fantastic atmosphere, easily one of the best on Sky Sports this season.

I’ll go for a 2-0 Blades win, maybe 2-1 (because we struggle to keep a clean sheet these days).
But I’m hoping deep down that with Wednesday in a bit of turmoil then we might see a historic 4 or 5-0.

Official capacity is 32,700, a total sell out (even sold every restricted view ticket), so I’ll predict 31,255 with 2,220 Owls fans.

We're fucked. This is the best chance to have a proper massacre against us probably ever.

Yeah but Nuhiu, Nuhiu, cut us some slack.

It's the lack of defence that scares me.

We will have Jones and Butterfield in the middle, Burton walked straight through them and can't pass forward. And as Southey said the defence is awful at the moment, Loovens is like a horse that should have been put down 6 months ago, and has now added the occasional kick of the opponents cock in to his game, yet he's still the best centre back we have fit at the moment. I hope we can shithouse it but I expect a 2-0 defeat.

I feel quite confident of winning as I do against any team in this league but at the same time I know it's easy to lose against anyone in this league, I don't care what defence is playing or how many injuries you have you still have a team capable of winning.

Not that I've seen.

Wednesdayite are running coaches from Sheffield picking up at the SW football ground. Then travelling 2.5 mile down the road. It’s says a police escort is provided there and back and a security barrier is provided at the away end. Also says on their web site the plan is for all the coaches to arrive at a location a short distance from the ground 1 hour before kick-off then the police will escort the coaches in.

So SYP are hoping to protect Blades fans from this invading force coming by coach.☺
Christ it's Bramall Lane were playing at not bleeding Basra or Russia.

As for the match I have been shitting myself all week, now nothing, no nerves, no trepidation, certainly no expectation of victory.
Maybe because I'm expecting a loss, the nerves just aren't there unlike the 1st match, where I thought it could go either way.

A coach went from London road to hillsborough earlier in the season it's not an official coach just a little money maker for bloke who runs it.

I'll be watching this one with interest. Not sure what result would suit us best. A Wednesday win and Lukuhay is an instant hero and may be tempted to rest players in the FA Cup game whereas a United win, while predictable may increase Lukuhay's desire to get a result against us. Also it doesn't sound as though a United win will deflate Wednesday all that much though as they're pretty much expecting one, though I would still feel more confident if Wednesday got hammered. I suppose it doesn't matter either way, Hillsborough will be a difficult game for us regardless of Wednesday's morale, so I'm gonna hope for a Wednesday win followed by players rested for the FA Cup.

Managers that get appointed to save a club from relegation often more than most just see cups as a distraction. But I think Wednesday fans would not accept a defeat to us after defeat to United whereas they might be a bit more accepting if they beat United and then don't really bother in the cup.

Nerves kicked in last night, no nerves today though. The closer to kick off it gets the more confident I'm getting, still expect a comfortable win for United but as long as we put in a battling performance and show some bollocks I can live with it. Get this out the way and it's all about getting to 50 points and letting Jos shape the squad how he wants.
