Are there actually any Salford fans on this forum.

Can't say I've come across any yet.
Perhaps we could take it in turns next season, if none show up, just to add a bit of balance to the forum.

I’ll start. Can’t wait for the first game of the season! Has anyone been to salford before? If they have and we are at home on the first day can you tell me where to park and drink. Up the ammies.

There’s one called Salfordian who reckons he’s supported Salford all his life. :lac:

I actually enjoyed watching that documentary they did on them like 3 seasons ago, didn’t quite realise it would end up here.

Best get used to them though, they won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

That’s football these days, that Notts go down (not that I actually feel sorry for them) and Salford come up.

Best parking about 10 miles outside the city and staying there. Or venture to Salford precinct (nowhere near the ground tbh) for the full Chernobyl experience.

Salford and Mansfield basically doing the same thing so unsurprising to see you defending them.

My tuppenceworth on this topic remains that I've no problem with owners coming in and spending money in order to bring success because I'd love to see my club be that successful, and I've no problem with clubs that have no league history getting into the league. It's the extremes in both cases for Salford that I think are wrong. A club so small that they have more owners than fans.

There was pretty much nothing there to begin with to build on, and what was there went in the bin, so the class of 92 essentially just created a new club from scratch. Lots of clubs struggling to stay afloat on the pittance that trickles down from the premier league. The last thing we need is a load of millionaires who made their names and fortunes in the prem and their billionaire mate deciding to create a brand new club with no fans and compete with the clubs already here.

It's like when millionaires say they donate money to charity and it turns out the charity they donate to is one they own that mostly benefits themselves.

Is Salford even a city?

Does it have a cathedral?

Not all cities do now - and haven't for some time. See Wolverhampton and Brighton and Hove as recent new cities.

Salford was granted city status in 1926.

Sort of, as in a Catholic one. So it's as much a city as Northampton or Brentwood on that basis...

But nowadays city status is detached from that, and, yeah the football team aren't making this up.

Reading-based Highmoor Ibis changed their name to Reading City last year. Reading isn't a city, but they changed their name as part of a campaign to make it one. Of course, the people that decide which towns get to be cities will be heavily influenced by the decisions of a Hellenic League club.

The one that always annoys me is Milton Keynes - I'm forever seeing it referred to as a city, there even used to be a football team called Milton Keynes City.

There was even this piece of crap in their local paper in Feb 18:

https://www.miltonkeynes.co.uk/news...is-a-city-just-ask-the-duke-of-kent-1-8388830

For the record, it has failed on it's last 3 bids to be declared a city in 2000, 2002 and 2012.
It’s always been known as a ‘New City’ since the idea of the London overspill came about in the 60’s but as you say has never been granted city status officially. Personally I call it ‘the city’ because it’s bigger than nearby Bedford and it’s just to differentiate, but we must be one of the largest towns with around 270,000 people living in MK. A shame not even 1% of that can bother to attend the football regularly.

Chelmsford have been called Chelmsford City since 1938, but it only became a city about five years ago.

Aye, Preston became a city in 2002 but only got a recognised cathedral in 2016.

University plays a big part in being granted city status.

You mean 'new town' the term 'new city' has never been used officially (though it wouldn't surprise me if Milton Keynes council were putting the term about hoping to sneak city status).

FWIW Milton Keynes is the 10th largest settlement are in the UK that isn't a city. The 4 largest are Bournemouth, Middlesbrough, Birkenhead and Reading.

A cathedral hasn't been required since 1884 when Southwell minster was made a cathedral but Southwell was not made a city. Before then Ripon and Manchester had newly designated cathedrals and both just assumed this made them a city, so because Southwell was much smaller it was formalised, that Ripon and Manchester were cities but Southwell was not. Shortly afterwards Nottingham which has never had a cathedral and Birmingham, which didn't have one at the time, were made cities. Salford was made a city in 1926 despite civil servants saying it was just a suburb of Manchester because the Home Secretary was from there.

Since then, population, identity and history have been the key factors. Having a big university, as Preston does, may have been a factor in getting city status (it certainly was for Cambridge which was made a city in 1951 for 'exceptional reasons') but it's not a specific criterion.

Southwell is barely a village, never mind a city!

So it does - I saw it advertised last night - they're showing Class of 92 2019 this weekend.

Oh, that's been on Sky? Wasn't the first one (when the Class of 92 invented Non-League football) on the BBC? I actually quite enjoyed that, will have to check out the Sky ones too.
