As said previously, the only thing that was possibly an error was the ball not being out of the box before being touched - that picture is still not conclusive.

The main point being, no one flagged for it at the time. You cant let a game go on for the time it did and then bring it back for something so inconclusive.

If the ref hadn't fannied around for 5 minutes deciding whether to give and just gave it straight away no one would be saying anything about the goal kick.

We're shite and going down and the club feels like it's never been lower.

It's all gone south for you lot, pretty sure you've been a strong side at this level for quite a while so not sure what's the deal with the decline. The support you have is championship-worthy, but all clubs can be de-railed by poor ownership and management.

I think Bradford are probably doomed but not completely out of it. All to play for in League one.

Can’t stop looking at the bottom half trying to work it out who will drop. I know there’s plenty of time between now and May and teams will pull away but I can still see a 8+ team relegation fight final day.

Sod it cant we just relegate twelve this year and let twelve up from league two?

Not just that, add in there that the ball has to leave the box before anyone else can touch it, which, again, doesn’t happen.
He hasn't touched the ball.

He deliberately collected it with his left foot when it reached outside the area. The lineo should have flagged immediately if he saw an infringement. Your players missed a sitter and switched off.

Your manager has done a good job deflecting blame for a terrible performance.

The real question is can Oxford build on an important winner against Bradford against Coventry on Saturday?

The team has been so inconsistent this season, putting together a little run of form is going to be crucial.

I will be watching on with keen interest from Pyongyang.

That would certainly bring the standard down.

Ok well we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he (the defender in the box) hasn’t touched it which just leaves the only offence of taking a goal kick with opponents in the box, which as I’m sure you’ve read on the previous page, is not allowed to happen.

A goal kick would be retaken if a player interferes/makes an attempt to block the goal kick. Your player punching the ground in frustration was rightly determined not to be interfering and the game allowed to be played on by the officials at the time.

"If an opponent who is in the penalty area when the goal kick is taken, or enters the penalty area before the ball is in play, touches or challenges for the ball before it has touched another player, the goal kick is retaken. "

Goodness know what would happen with another official involved.

Probably still wouldn't get it right as that one would have his own verison of events.

I’ve already linked the rules myself, “Opponents must be outside the penalty area until the ball is in play”.

Firstly, no qualms about the result overall in that we thoroughly deserved to lose. We were completely second best all game, it was baffling the way we set up after beating Peterborough well last Saturday and running Luton close in midweek.

Just to clear all this up in terms of the laws though. The fact our players were already in the area when the goal kick is taken in itself isn’t an offence. Procedurally, opponents shouldn’t be in the area - but if they’re already there and don’t challenge for the ball then you play on.

We shouldn’t have to interpret the laws this way, but the inference can be taken from law 13 on free kicks in the area which specifically covers the above exact scenario. Law 16 on goal kicks is more ambiguous on the same issue, somewhat annoyingly.

Ball in/out of the area when played is black and white though, must be a retake - that can be our only bone of contention in this incident.

What I don’t understand is how the officials have managed the situation. Touching the ball in the area from a goal kick should be getting flagged for and the assistant doesn’t do that - though I suppose he possibly said something on their intercom. The assumption would therefore have to be that it’s the ‘opponents in the area’ piece they got muddled on, which is incredible for officials in the professional game.

As bad a game management as it would have been by the officials, they could have gone back for the goal kick if required (which is what they started to do) as there hadn’t been a restart after the incident i.e. BCFC hadn’t taken kick off.

The ref can play advantage though, like with a quick free kick when opponents aren't 10 yards away? The only infringement here requiring the game to be stopped could be whether the ball was played before it had left the box.

https://www.skysports.com/football/...eams-can-still-go-down-with-eight-games-to-go

Interesting read that. Some key takeaways:

Who is in the best form?
AFC Wimbledon, as mentioned above, have won their last three games and could be out of the bottom four sooner or later if they keep this form up.

Bristol Rovers have climbed as high as 13th after winning three and drawing one of their last four, while every other side, bar two, have won one of their last three games.

Who is in the worst form?
Wycombe looked relatively comfortable in mid-table, but a run of three draws and six defeats in their last nine games has seen them drop into trouble.

Southend are without a win in 10 (four draws, six defeats) and that run has seen them drop to 20th, only above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Who has the easiest run-in?
If we determine a team's position in the league as how difficult they are to face - ie. Luton have a difficulty of 1 and Bradford 24 - we can work out how tough each side's run-in is depending on the average league position of their remaining opponents.

Taking this into account, Scunthorpe will be the happiest as they have an average remaining opponent of 15.5 in the league, while Gillingham (15.1) and AFC Wimbledon (14.9) are close behind.

Who has the toughest run-in?
Plymouth, despite being in the best position of every club, have by far the toughest average run-in. Their remaining opponents are at an average of 10.3 in the table, with the nearest after that being Accrington, who are a full place lower on 11.3.

Oxford and Bradford (both 11.8) and Rochdale and Bristol Rovers (both 11.9) are the other sides facing opponents with an average of just inside the top half of the table.

Having to play higher placed teams than those scrapping for relegation at this stage of the season is not necessarily a disadvantage for us.

1 place for League 2 secured. Think today has all but done it for us.

Shambles of a season.

Backed Powell literally just over a week ago but my patience is wearing thin haha not one shot on target today we are awful, so so bad. If we don’t get rid I think we are down. Nothing about him tells me has it in him to change things. We lost Cox to injury today means we’re relying on 18 year old up top

By all accounts we were indeed shit, but a win is a win and I couldn't care less.

I definitely don't want to watch us play those hoofer teams in the dungeon any time soon. Not that we're safe at all.

Will be on the beers in Pyongyang after that result. A win with the efficiency of a military march here in DPRK!

Two victories against Wycombe and Walsall and the Mighty Ox will be all but safe.

You do realise you are one of the hoofer teams or have I just been whooshed.

Never seen a Coleman side capitulate and throw the towel in like we did today.

2-0 up at Burton and lost 5-2.

Still to play Luton, Doncaster, Sunderland and Pompey (last game) - not looking good for us...

Bad keeper error for our second goal scored by Burke but not quite sure what the other one was that you refer to.

BBC stats say that even as the away side we had 54% of the play and the same number of shots on target as Wombles so both sides must have been much of a shitness.

First goal he was beaten at near post with a weak hand to the ball. First 40 mins were decent but second half you dominated. Only one team in it up to your quickfire two goal turnaround. Then no complaint you bossed it.

I've been thinking for quite a while that this will be higher than usual, around the 55 mark, but I can't see 1 or 2 of Shrewsbury, Southend, Walsall & Rochdale picking up 13/14 points from 7 games.

I reckon 50 will do it as I think quite a few teams still have to play each other down here. 52 is almost certain I would think

Good to know that, in theory, Oxford could secure safety in their next two games. I think Walsall will be ok, but Southend may drop. They've hit this run of poor form at a dreadful time.
