Plenty of new signings involved for us against a seemingly difficult to predict Rovers, who have admittedly faced a tough run of opening fixtures. A scary 5-0 thrashing of Southend in the midst of some 'meh' results.

Difficult one to call so I'm going to sit on the fence and say 1-1.

2-1 with the feel good factor of the new signings and potentially having Thompson make his debut too. In some ways it feels like the start of the season proper to me..

We'll lose this one, we are normally shit on tv, abysmal away record and facing an old manager who has had plenty of stick for being a bottle job.

Signed 3 players on deadline day but not really much quality to make any difference Sunday imo.

Team prediction

O'Donnell
Cummings, Ajayi, Ihiekwe, Mattock
Williams, Towell, Potter, Newell
Ball
Moore

Subs: Rodak, Onariase, Emmanuel, Vaulks, Frecklington, Taylor, Clarke-Harris

Think our following will be very low being on Sunday and on tv so i reckon 200 ish.

See that Joe Newell - who could walk into any midfield in this league starts on the bench for Rotherham.

Rotherham looked good so far and deserve to be in front, Taylor and Moore causing Pourtsmouth a lot of problems. 28 away games without a win is absolutely abysmal.

He's been dreadful.

Thought we just deserved that win tbh with the chances we had first half.

Pompey came into it more 2nd half and looked more likely to get the next goal but I always felt we were in comfortable and well organised.

A great away win at last against a decent team as well who should be up there at end of the season, hopefully this will kick start our season now we push to get around promotion contender.

On ability, he could. Being a lazy twat somewhat negates that however. Witness his strolling around after coming on today.

Was Jackett choosing to start with three at the back as sign of over confidence or disrespectful to Rotherham, or do Pompey normally get success like that? He clearly rectified it at half time and the home side were better for it, but it was relief to see our defence hold it together for a change. Like reaper, I'm hoping this is a springboard for us and the defence is now sorted.

From the 20 minutes I saw it looked like your style of play was "kick it towards Jamal Lowe".

We're a big ol' work in progress, and that was even more evident today. Jamal Lowe should never have been played as a wingback..

It was very disjointed, and as FarehamPompey says we didn't really have a discernible style of play. There are positives though, such as the solid debuts for Hawkins, Kennedy and O'Keefe. I think it'll take a while but we will end up being a solid top half side.

In regards to the formation, Kenny has been talking up 3 at the back for a while, but I'm not sure today was the best day to introduce it. The gaps between defense/midfield and midfield/attack were really poor. Everything needs a lot of work, basically.

I'm totally with your analysis Bucket. I think it was a case of too many new things tried at once. I don't get the idea that a 3-5-2 formation is somehow 'disrespectful' to the other team, beaufighter? It's just another formation isn't it?

Can't argue with the result, really. Yes we had more chances in the second half but that always happens when you've let the away team get in front in the first half.

Our team needs a lot of fine-tuning, but I still think the basic parts are there. I was impressed with Hawkins, Kennedy, O'Keefe and Thompson who all look like upgrades from what we had. Adam May looks like he has tons of potential, but needs to cut out the odd careless pass. Haven't seen anything to dissuade me from my pre-season 'around 10th' prediction.

Yes, of course it is. I was just wondering if (in the context of walking out after five matches as we were such a basket case last season) Jackett may have been tempted to think " only need three at back to beat these" :)

tbf, it's more likely to be a formation Jackett likes anyway, but there may still be an element of us being 'a good opportunity to try it' at play. Just wondering what people with a less tainted view of Jackett may think.

Thought the same as I watched the game. Even his captain had a go at him on a couple of occasions. Couple of corners that I remember him taking were very poor. Would like to think this was a one off for the lad.

Has he resigned yet?

Nowt against Portsmouth proper big football club especially in this division but Jacket is a coward and bottler of the highest order.

Really pleased for the Millers that made the journey, I thought it was a really good turn out considering our terrible away form and it being on Sky.

Regarding Jamal Lowe - I guess he's still very raw and he was definitely in the wrong position first half. He doesn't have too many league appearances to his name. There is a lot of raw talent there, though. He can beat his man and has an eye for goal (though he didn't show it yesterday!). I wouldn't write him off just yet.

When he left you went on to become one of the worst sides in FL history, so can hardly say he bottled it -- saw that it was a hopeless task and fucked off, though, def.

Not quite. When he took over we were ALREADY one of the worst sides in FL history, courtesy of A Stubbs. Rest of it is true enough. Baffles me what he didn't know before he agreed to take the job.. should have been obvious, even in October, most fans regarded him as an appointment to rebuild us in L1. Not an appointment to keep us up. We knew that ship had sailed, hit the iceberg and gone down with all hands before the end of August.

i understand why you would stick up for him, he did a good job at Millwall and at Wolves.
When we appointed him I was delighted and a bit shocked he has taken the job.

Nobody expected he could turn the season around, Stubbs had bought in too many inferior players and wasted the budget.
What I did believe is that he would organise us, improve us and pick up a few results along the way, a bit like Warnock did the previous season without the staying up bit.
Relegation would have still been expected but we would at least have had a settled team and be in a decent position to mount a challenge this season.

He had an interview, knowing the results to date, knowing the state of the squad, knowing there was very little in the kitty and still took the job.
Five weeks later for some reason he suddenly decided he couldn't carry on.
So to me that makes him a coward and a bottler.

The other option was that he dumped us to take the Norwich job, but their results improved briefly so the sacking there didn't come.
I suspect we will never know the truth.

That would make him a snake, either way he isn't very popular in these parts.

Jackett came purely for a payout.

Asked Tony Stewart to sack him 5 weeks in and then agreed to leave mutually.

We put a clause in the resignation agreement that he couldn't take a new job for 6 months.

Slimy odious southern prick got his just deserts Sunday and it was well worth the journey to call him a wanker.
