What are the budgets like for the majority of League One sides and who are the sides with bigger budgets?

Naturally going into next season a little blind so wondering how big the gulf in finances is between Championship & League 1.

Think Sunderland broke the mould with theirs but top end is around 8-9m I believe.

One of Pompey or Sunlun will be the big hitters, rest will be much of a muchness, Lincoln will have a decent financial backing I'm told and maybe Blackpool can up theirs but rest I'm not sure on.

Whilst our budget was top end League Two, I dont feel it's going to grow much next year as all the talk is of us having an equivalent budget to the first year back in the league, ie. Mid-table overall but running a small squad (20 senior pros), which to be fair we always do. Probably 5 loanees mostly as cover. Cowley prefers to have a core of 14/15 who play nearly every game rather than have loads of unhappy players not in the squad. This means we can pay well on a player by player basis without a huge overall bill.

No idea really on figures but would think a bit over £3million. Other Imps fans might be more enlightened.

We'll have a top 6 budget I'm sure especially if we sell biggest assets in Vaulks and Ajayi.

Clive said the average against bench marking this season in L1 was £3.1m, and as you say, we'll be running a bottom half budget, so that'll probably be not far off.

We'll have to rely on player sales and raise additional money, which hasn't been unusual the last 2 or 3 seasons so it's expected. It's the only way to get more into the budget because we're maxed out on everything else i.e. sponsorship and ticketing.

We probably had the biggest budget in L2, and met Jayden Stockley's £750k buyout clause in January (as did several other clubs outside of L2) but unsurprisingly he chose Preston in the Championship.

As for L1 in previous seasons we've generally been top 6 budget-wise (according to the chairman) but this time there are a few more clubs with bigger budgets around that have dropped down from the Championship in the last couple of seasons.

Just find a budget you like, take it, steal the money and pass it off as your own......

Great idea, we've already 'stolen' a club and the authorities clearly don't care about that so might as well resort to actual cash robberies too.

EDIT: Disclaimer, I do not condone any of the above.

I don't think he could, he's apparently worth about £160m (24th richest owner in the EFL according to some local paper).

I reckon ours would be around the £3m mark, although I have no evidence to back it up.

I imagine that ours will be similar to the season just gone - lower end of the scale. We have the money from the cup run (minus player bonuses) but with the new ground, we need to concentrate on that.

It'll be interesting to see if anything changes now that we no longer have a high flying accountant at the helm.

Ours will be one of the lowest.

Accy, Wimbledon and Wycombe also strike me as sensibly run clubs who don't overspend..

I have no idea whether this is true or not, but I’ve seen the figure of 1.2 million quoted for us. And that is going to be cut next season. Gulp.

I definitely agree with living within your means, so it’s not a whine, but still...

We were always a “top six budget” according to the chairman and Karl Robinson during his time with us at this level. I’d hope that’s the same, but we’ll have to wait and see. Tis plays his cards a lot closer to his chest in that respect.

I think our wage bill is around around the £3.8M mark (this is what it was in the 17/18 season where we finished 3rd and apparently paid out a lot more than usual in performance bonuses) which I'd imagine has us in the lower mid-table range. Unlikely to increase much/at all next season as we are one of those unusual clubs who lives within its means and, with player sales, usually just about breaks even(ish) each season.

I think we are one of only a handful of clubs in the EFL with absolutely no debt, have ~£3M cash in the bank and own our stadium and training ground (which we have invested heavily in over the last 18 months) outright so are in a very good place off the pitch compared to most.

I'd expect us to be hovering around mid-table next season as that appears to be our place in the food chain......

Can't be that low, surely? That'd be one of the bottom L2 budgets.

Andrade will be sold to the highest bidder I reckon and maybe one other but if that allows the arrival of 4/5 new faces so be it.
Done the last two summer by selling Raggett and Woodyard so I'm sure we'll do it again, you have to as a club of our size.

That should be enough for you to take back Mr. Payne.

Ours was 4th highest - over £4m.

Presumably, Sunderland, Pompey/Charlton and Luton took the top 3.

We haven't had any indication yet as to what ours may be; though our released list is due this week apparently so we may get an idea from that, or follow announcements.

Season ticket sales are already 10% up on last season based on the (ironic to the outsider) feel good factor about the club direction and playing style. Based on the past PR spin and arguably broken promises though I wouldn't be confident in that translating into a top-end League One playing budget.

From a fan point of view, disregarding additions I really struggle to form an opinion of how short we are for this League as I'm upfront about knowing very little about the standard of L1. Some suggest the gap is huge whilst others have told me we may find it challenging.

pretty sure there were more than 4 sides paying that money. Sunderland, charlton, barnsley, donnie, pompey, posibly Luton, fleetwood maybe even.
