So he's turned Newcastle from a stable (and reasonably successful) Premier League club yet volatile business into a stagnant business that hops in and out of the Championship. The sort of owner all Newcastle fans should love, considering the potential they have as the 7th largest fan base in the Premier League and one of the few clubs in the country with an entire city behind them. They shouldn't be aiming for better than this the ungrateful scrotes, after all the joy in football is all about the bottom line.

There are many investors that could do a much better job on and off the pitch than Mike Ashley if only someone could wrest his grip from the club. One of the biggest clubs in the country should not be outspent by Huddersfield and Brighton in the era of £5 billion TV deals.

You brought Sunderland into the debate and they are completely irrelevant to it.

Things could always be shitter, that doesn't mean Newcastle fans aren't right to question aspects of Ashley's ownership.

He buys Swansea tomorrow, are you happy?
Newcastle are a top 10 PL club - that is a fact and if that constitutes as the club being "run into the ground" or being "fucked" then quite frankly the majority of other clubs should just give up.

Newcastle's problem is they were fuck all for the majority of their history so their success in the 90's with Keegan & Sir Bobby doing his genius in the early to mid noughties has skewed the rationale of the fans and as such they have delusions of grandeur.

How are Sunderland completely irrelevant? They were a PL football club and the closest rivals to Newcastle. If we're deriding Ashley's ownership then it is only right to compare with the closest competitors.

Sunderland from 11/12 to 15/16 had a net spend on transfers alone of over £95m. They are now in League One. That is what you call being run into the ground and fucked.

Ashley is a tight bastard but is sustaining a top 10 PL club - facts.

Newcastle don't have a divine right to be good. The only reason they achieved their success in the 90's in the first place was because of big investment - they weren't naturally competing in the top flight due to their stature like Spurs & Everton always have done. It's telling both of you support United no offence. Fucking hell offer finishing 10th in the PL to fans of FL clubs on the proviso they won't make lavish signings doing it they'd snap your hand off.

The club wasn't that volatile financially before he took over. Shepherd had a mortgage on the stadium, which was a loooong term investment to increase match day revenue. That amount was due immediately upon the change of ownership. He'd have known that had he done his due diligence rather than just having his pal look at the numbers. The only other debt we had was a £70mil bank loan which, while quite high, was manageable. More than manageable given the increase in TV money. The 2 relegations have only increased our debt. Or commercial revenue was higher in 2006 than it was in 2016, which is just outrageous.

You were a more attractive brand in 2006. The scenes of Newcastle fans punching horses probably put the world of commerce off putting it's name to the brand.

Previous owners had also spent up-front multiple sponsorship revenues and still had installments to pay on player purchases. Everything Ashley should've known of course but to pretend it was milk & honey before he arrived is just silly. If you were in Sunderland's position fair enough but you're 10th in the PL.

No offence taken, I just follow the game of football these days, I care far less about Manchester United and the Premier League than I used to. I'm not blinded to the reality of most Football League clubs, I am aware many would kill to be in Newcastle's position, but most of those clubs do not have the fan base or the ability the become an upper-half Premier League mainstay like Newcastle do.

As much as you keep repeating that Ashley has turned them into top 10 club, it's more honest to state that he's turned them into a yoyo club that is currently masking their deficiencies on and off the pitch with a manager that is coaching a club well below his capability. There are worse owners in football and I agree with you about Sunderland, but Newcastle could do a lot better given their financial potential. No club has a divine right to be good, but some clubs have a lot more potential than others to be and Newcastle have performed well below their potential since Mike Ashley took over.

No PL club, nor the league itself, was a more attractive brand in 2006.

I'm not so sure. History tells us Newcastle don't do much in the top flight if it isn't Keegan being bankrolled or Sir Bobby doing his thing - if it wasn't for Bobby they'd have gone down and the premise of Ashley being responsible for turning them into a yo-yo club would be dead. Pardew came closest to matching their exploits which tells us all we need to know really.

The first relegation wasn't all his own fault. The previous owners & the fans have to shoulder most of the blame. Replacing Sir Bobby with Souness & Roeder was shocking ownership. The fans hounding out Big Sam and convincing a naive Ashley it'd be a good idea to replace him with Keegan was shocking support. Appointing Kinnear wasn't great granted but the rot was well set by that point - even the know it all that is Alan Shearer couldn't do owt.

I'm not pretending Ashley is some great but this he's the devil crap is tiresome. Newcastle fans are deluded. They can say what they want but based on their 125 year history finishing 10th in the top flight is a successful season.

Since WW2 ended Newcastle have spent the 9th most time in the top division of English football and have the 9th best league record among all English league clubs. Upper mid-table top division was their level before Ashley and given the success they had in the 90s/early 00s and their support, they should be pushing to at least solidify that.

As great as last season was, in their post WW2 history, 10th is merely decent. Mike Ashley's Newcastle has under performed, their average finish (including a 5th in the PL - the one time they outperformed their level - and two Championship stints) is 14th - 15th.

Of the clubs above Newcastle since the war, only Aston Villa are under-performing right now, the other clubs ahead of Newcastle are Liverpool, Arsenal, United, Spurs, Everton, Chelsea and City. As you say, there's no divine right for any club to be successful on the pitch, but Newcastle (and Villa) could be doing better given their tradition and potential revenue.

Wow, Rob Green just won Chelsea a penalty shoot out. What if we got it all wrong and goalkeepers just get better and better forever?

Don't really agree with that. Shortly after the war we were classed as the best team in world football (early 50's). Hell the Champions League (European Cup) was created because Wolves beat Honved. Ever since then we have been in decline.

Every club has good periods and bad periods, Newcastle have fluctuated from the top of the tree to near the bottom of the old second division. I'm just pointing out that Newcastle's average is the 9th best club in England and every club ahead of them in the all-time table is performing up to that level apart from Villa. True to form, they even had the 9th highest revenue in English football in 2016 (couldn't find any more up to date stats). It's not unreasonable to suggest that a club the stature of Newcastle's could be doing better given that they have the 7th largest fan base in the country.

Wolves are 11th since WW2, which is very impressive, despite having a smaller fanbase, smaller stadium and competition from Villa, West Brom and Birmingham for supporters in the local area.

He didn't reduce Newcastle down to one centre back upon relegation.

The big man has saved thousands of jobs today. Stepping up.

That's maturity kicking in, Gerard. Watching the same team week-in week-out is mind-numbingly boring.

Glad we are not Spurs first game at the new WHL, they'd be even more up for it. Mind you Wembley away with them was our worst performance of last season!

Apparently Mo will get six points which is five more than Everton currently have.

TWITTER JOKES!

Another 'apparently' - the person that recorded Mo on his phone at the wheel was a Liverpool fan chasing an autograph. Mo snubbed him so the Liverpool fan passed the footage on to the police as an act of pure revenge.

The plot thickens.
