You’re talking about a very small club there and the main reason behind that being financial gains for them. That isn’t the main factor for any proper league club.

Are you trying to suggest players in our league prefer playing at Maidstone or Sutton to Tranmere? Proper football is played on grass and it’s up to clubs to maintain that properly. Sutton can not afford to do that so they have a plastic pitch. Can’t have it both of ways.

In a league with several clubs in danger of going out of business, I would have thought financial gains would be very welcome; the current business model seems to be broken. If little old Eastbourne can make money from their pitch, maybe a few clubs in this league should take note.

Many players in this league and those above and below train regularly on 3G pitches. Why would clubs allow that if it was an inferior surface? A 3G surface like Sutton's is not a cheap alternative to maintaining a grass pitch. They cost a lot of money to install and need to be maintained properly.

"Proper football" is played on all kinds of surfaces from grass to mud to sand to 3G. Nobody is forcing anyone to install 3G if that's not right for them. But we are regularly forced to play on mud bath pitches and recently had an away fixture abandoned due to rain.

They’re not terrible. Just not suitable for league football. At amateur level they represent a 0 maintenance solution, but the vast majority is still played on grass.

Because training pitches that are in constant use need the higher durability. It's not rocket science. You have only installed one so you can rent out your pitch, not because it is better.

There was huge scepticism at Maidstone about 3G when it first came in. But I literally cannot remember the last time a Maidstone fan suggested we get rid of it. We have tasted Football League and are as ambitious as any set of fans you will meet. Yet nobody wants to get rid of the pitch. It's certainly not because of the home advantage, because we play better away. Many people even say they would rather remain in the National League than give up the pitch.

Why would this be, if all we want is promotion? First, the consistent high quality of the surface and the passing game it encourages. Second, instead of being used once a fortnight, all kinds of community groups and kids play on it every day and evening of the week. The generation of fans we lost are returning and feeling a sense of ownership. Finally, we look at all these clubs at risk of going out of business, while we make a profit and grow every year. Who wants to emulate them?

I think you completely glossed over my point. I was saying that the only ones who'll advocate the use of the pitch are those who support teams who have them in use. That was all.

And I'm saying, those who regularly watch football on 3G prefer it to grass. Maybe they have noticed something you've missed. No club who have gone 3G have a campaign to return to grass. Our ambition is to grow sustainably rather than go out of business again. I will take profitability in the National League with 3G, over struggling financially in the Football League on grass every time. Name me any football club at our level who have made a surplus five years running.

The sample size for this statement is rather small, don't you think? No football league clubs have ever had a 3G pitch. In elite level sport, the Baltimore ravens returned to grass after a campaign from the players.
