I love that McKeown came out and said how he double-bluffed Sweeney for the penalty. McKeown pointed to his left, and Sweeney did exactly that causing McKeown to save!

After seeing the highlights, the Grimsby players are very clearly in the box before Sweeney hits the penalty. Why didn't the referee let us re-take it?

Interesting (or not) stat I saw today. Since 2016, McKeown has faced 13 league penalties. One of them was missed.
He’s saved 5 out the other 12. He’s also gone the right way on 10/13 penalties. Does anyone know if this is a good level for a keeper?
Even better when you consider that he was thought of as being poor at facing penalties in his first few seasons with us.

How often do you see penalties retaken these days for encroachment. Hardly ever. I'm not saying that's right just the way it is.

However if you look at the picture below it was pretty marginal with both players still having one foot on the line so it was hardly a major encroachment which would have drawn the refs attention to it. Also note that McKeown was still on his line when the ball was struck. The penalty was saved, you score some, you miss some, shall we just move on now?

Can’t believe that stat on McKeown, he was always known as being poor at pens (believe he didn’t save a single one in both our Wembley pen shoot outs)! Great record.

Not sure why you're trying to defend it. It was 'major encroachment' as two players are clearly in the box - As your photo shows. The penalty should have been retaken. Quite simple really.

Makes no difference if 1 player has 1 foot in the box, or 10 players are all stood on the goal line. It's against the rules and the penalty save shouldn't have stood.

Haha - I wonder what you’d have said if you’d scored it.

I've seen penalties scored when there's sometimes one or more opposing players almost level with the taker when the ball is kicked and no retake is ordered. Our players had obviously just moved a split second before the ball was kicked, hence them still having one foot on the line.

I'm not saying it's right but it's just how it is these days. If we were to make sure every penalty was taken legally it'd take about a dozen attempts each kick to achieve it. I'm sure every penalty save your keeper has ever made has always been within the rules!

Don't see darts players with a foot over the oche do you ?......why is it footballers, from the top to the bottom, have this problem with following the simplest of rules ?

because Darts players aren't trying to get to the dart board?

I agree its wrong, though seen much worse, but at least use a decent example rather than darts!

The point is is that it's a rule.....when the oche was just a painted line then there was all sorts of problems so a raised strip had to be laid because even darts players couldn't resist that halfinch toe on the line....skittle players are another bunch....ten foot of space to launch the ball yer some still have their foot 6" over the line....jeez, how hard is it ?

It would take a hell of a lot of bottle for a ref to signal a saved penalty to be retaken. Genuinely wouldn't be bothered if this was Exeter encroaching in their box if we'd have had one saved. It's not really a rule that gets imposed consistently is it? To call it a "major encroachment" is quite simply laughable. They're so barely inside the box, that the lino/ref probably didn't even realise in real time.

How is it? You had 2 players in the box. That is major encroachment. This isn't really about opinions it's a fact. Trying to excuse this because it's not 'imposed consistently' is what's laughable. You cheated, your penalty save shouldn't have counted, and the penalty should have been retaken. I don't even know how this has turned into a debate, it's a fact. And it's laughable you're trying to defend it and say it's ok. Had he retaken it, and had your players actually followed the rules, we may have scored. Those additional 2 points may well cost our club a promotion come the end of the season, which would be financially devastating for a club of our size and financial capabilities.

Blimey, are we still harping on about something that happens regularly in a lot of games (right or wrong).

It may have passed you by but we both have games tonight so maybe we should move onto that now.

At the end of the day, the penalty was saved, legally or not and the game finished 0-0. Just accept it and move on instead of crying about it like a 10 year old!

Major encroachment would be a player about a few steps into the box. It's a slight encroachment. But fair enough, if this is what you need to tell yourself. The truth is you weren't good enough to take 3 points from a side who started the day in 21st.

Well it's hard to say that when you cheated. Maybe if we had a fair game, we would have won. We'll never know, because as shown in your own fans image, your players had major encroachment by entering the box - Not just one player, but two players who were over a yard inside the box. Highly amusing that you can't just accept you cheated, the penalty should have been retaken. You're evidently just trolling, or you fail to understand pretty basic footballing rules.

i'm sure if you were to go through every penalty taken so far this season, you'd probalby find about 1 in 10 that was taken legitimately to the letter of the law.

To use the word "cheating" is just laughable though. Cheating is something a player does on purpose and as you can see Sweeney has already kicked the ball so there must have been a split second between that and our players moving.

Yes by the letter of the law it should have been retaken but then I'd say about 9 out of 10 Exeter penalties should have been retaken too.

Anyway, that's my last word on this matter as I'll be concentrating on the Colchester game now and hopefully we can win with another "cheated" penalty.

This clown has to be trolling . You so often see much worse encroachment on penalties than seen here. Nobody gives a shit.

Mmm interesting.

This is JJ Hooper’s penalty miss against Exeter last season:

So which encroachment is worse would you say?

I can count 5 ‘cheating’ bastards myself pal.

As far as I'm concerned, enforcement of the encroachment law only comes into play if it either a) affected the player taking the penalty (it didn't) or b) affected the attacking side's ability to follow up any rebound (it didn't).

Any bleating on about Grimsby's so-called encroachment just comes across as sour grapes.

Haha I didn’t know how to tag people or I’d have tagged him myself, I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for a response as Devon Lad is very vocal until he’s proved wrong which is when he usually disappears.
