I don't think it was a clear cut red card. Mane has every right to go for that ball and had his eyes on the ball 100%, every goalkeeper knows the dangers of running at an attacker like that at full speed.

I hold my hands up and after watching it a few more times I'm less convinced about it being a bullshit decision as I first said. Like Nilsson above though, I don't think it's as clear cut as some on here are making out. But in real time you can see why it was given.

Also, the City players straight in the ref's face likely had an influence. The cnuts.

To talk again about Klopp's shortfalls, our style of play when we were 2-3 nil down with 10 men is one of his main ones for me. Give Mourinho credit where it's due (which isn't easy), he would have changed things as soon as the red was shown and would have likely still been 1-0 down with 5 minutes to go, looking for a route one afro equaliser on the break. Rather than balls out attack the entire second half, inviting goals.

How many times do I read that a loss is a loss and that fans are happier if the tactic is to equalise no matter what. You disagree with that I take it.

Thanks for that comment though, it explains the scoreline.

Each game is different, and more importantly the opposition is different. If we were playing against Stoke or Swansea for example, I'd have been more willing to press for an equaliser in the way we did as they are less likely to score more. But once we were down to 10 men whilst already being a goal down away against a team like City and with the attacking options they have, it was then about keeping the score respectable. Short of a catastrophic City fuck up, we were nearly always going to lose once the red was shown. We just didn't need to lose 5-0.

I think that's part of the point though... He has a duty of care to his opponent not to kick him in the head, and just as the goalkeeper should know there's a risk of a collision, so should the forward when he's bearing down on goal. Thought it was a clear red card personally.

Liverpool don't look much like "contenders" to me, have I been sold a pup SALTIRE? lol

Like klopp said, better to lose 5-0 one game than lose 5 games 1-0. Big game midweek, beat Sevilla and we make it through to knockout stage of CL.

I just think if a keeper runs out like that with the ball up in the air he should do so with the knowledge that he's likely going to get hurt. You can't expect an attacker to make no attempt on the ball being one on one with the keeper and the ball in a getable place. The ref had every right to send him off, I just don't think it's clear as cut as some on here were suggesting.

Fair enough Nilsson.

On the other hand, it's pretty much the clearest red you'll ever see and had the ref not sent him off he would have been completely ignoring the rules of the game.

It's pretty blatant as soon as you see a replay. It was dangerous play, as dangerous as two feet in the air sliding challenges, no matter the intent. Just as well Coutinho is back because there is no chance that ban is getting overturned. It's rare enough that you see a player challenging a keeper rushing out to head a ball at full pace with their feet up. It was negligent.

Shame, 11 vs 11 I fancied Liverpool to have pulled the game back.

This pissed me off. Despite their goal against the run of play, prior to the red we were the better team overall I'd say and I'm confident we'd have scored at least one. Salah was absolutely mullering Otamendi down the right in particular, it was embarrassing at times.

It's not a bad foul, but obviously with the way Ederson comes out of it, it's normal for a red card. If he doesn't have the injury it's probably yellow - KDB

Liverpool would have gotten back in that if Salah could finish.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
Why exactly are City fans booing Milner?

Because he was offered a contract, let his run down to leave on a free 'to win trophies and play in central midfield' (arf) then was applauded on his first return to The Emptyhad and went on to slag the club off in interviews afterwards. It's also a bit of a reaction to the way Liverpool fans treat Sterling.

My view on the red.

When it happened live, I didn't think anything more than it was a good defensive header by the 'keeper. But from another angle, and crucially from the angle the ref saw it as, it was a bad challenge.

He was late, his studs were showing, he was off the ground and wasn't in control and he wiped the other player out. If that was a challenge on the ground where he planted his studs in a defender's shin and sent him flying, it wouldn't even be a debate.

There was no malice or 'intent', and he was 'going for the ball' but neither of those stop it being a red card. It was reckless, clumsy and dangerous. As Carragher said afterwards, of the times he was sent off, none of them were when he tried to 'do' a player. He just got there late and got it wrong. There's no argument about it being a red. None at all.

Had he gone up with his head to try and win it (going up with your head to beat someone a foot taller than you to a high ball is slightly less futile than somehow trying to do the same thing with your foot) then he wouldn't have been off. I'm (not really) surprised it's such a massive issue.

Other than that, a great attacking performance, albeit against 10-men (when City were down to ten v Everton, they battled back to draw, but, you know...) so, yeah, enjoyed it.

However Ederson clearly stoops before the challenge, so is Manes foot really that high and therefore dangerous?
No. It fucking aint.

I don't see why anyone is picking City out for booing a former player. He didn't cover himself with glory after leaving and even committed the (apparently) cardinal sin of celebrating a goal.

Liverpool fans have slaughtered Sterling, and would have done again today if he hadn't been suspended. Why shouldn't City fans do the same?

Are you on glue? Ederson is 6 foot 2, Mane is 5 foot nine. Even if Ederson's head is a foot down, it's still almost head height for Mane!

But the altitude of the actual collision isn't the point. He's studs up and gets there late. You get sent off for that six inches off the ground, so why not six feet? If Ederson was stood upright and got caught in the chest, it would be a red card. If he was jumping to win the header and got caught in the stomach, it would be a red card. If he was on the ground and caught him on the shin, it would be a red card.

If you're late in a challenge, the other player takes the ball cleanly and you crunch them, off the ground and with studs showing then it's a red card. That's literally all there is to it.

Definite red, despite that not being Mane's intention.

Liverpool struggled last season without Mane if I recall, he'll be out for 3 games now. Coutinho will probably come straight back in for him

This was unfortunate. My condolences to our resident Liverpudlians. All 1 of them.
