That is brilliantly work on both from the linesman, officials get a hammering when they get marginal calls wrong but he's got two really tough ones spot on in a difficult atmosphere.

The first one SHOULD be offside, though - a rule that makes little sense to me.

Blimey - for 85 minutes the officials had it easy at Anfield then all hell broke loss!

Brave assistant at the end to give that penalty- Mind you he missed the offside for Spurs' first.

Both Kane and Lallema (spelling) made the most of both "fouls"

Shame as there were 2 excellent goals which won't get the headlines!

Dunno why Liverpool fans are saying that wasn't a penalty. Van Dijk tried to pull out but it was too late, he clearly caught Lamela. Very clumsy defending by the £75m man. He hasn't had the best of starts to his Liverpool career, it must be said.

Anyway, good result for us and late heartbreak for Liverpool. I make that a decent Sunday's football.

Looks like a consensus amongst non-Liverpool fans, the officials were great.

Well done, officials.

The second penalty was an example of how any sort of contact these days in the area has a good chance of resulting in a foul and penalty, and how any opposition player makes the most of such a contact because of that, despite the fact he could have easily stayed upright had he wished. It's a shame but it's how the game is these days. To cut the shit, I'd be lying if I pretended that Firmino, Mane or Salah would have reacted any differently. I'm simply old enough to remember how the game was different and such theatrics would have been laughed at.

What made the difference here is that the referee waving for no foul would have been the end of it in the vast majority of games, where as here the linesman insisted on his view being heard and the referee allowed his initial decision to be overruled.

Its alright. We haven't had to drop him for a 21 year old academy player!

Not too fussed on the result tbh, I'd have took a draw prematch anyway as we are still in a healthy position. We'll catch yous yet. ;)

Good thing its NLD next week. Draw is alright since It doesn't really matter whether we finish 2nd or 4th anyway.

In terms of the first one, for me it's offside but after hearing the conversation between linesman and referee I question whether there's been a rule change? I was under the impression that it didn't really matter if the defender gets a touch - if the ball is intentionally passed to an offside player then its offside, regardless of who it hits from the opposition on the way through?

If it hits a defender on the way through and ISN'T offside, does that mean that if someone taps in a rebound from what is generally considered an offside position after the keeper saves a shot is now a perfectly fine goal?

Or did they just get it wrong...?

You just know that most of the talk in the various match reports will be about Kane, despite Salah pissing on him in terms of quality and match contribution.

The second was a stonewall penalty. Hilarious seeing all the Scousers going mental over it on Twitter.

Well let's put it this way..

Had that been on Salah/Mane in the Spurs area Klopp and co would have been screaming for a penalty..

And Spurs probably feeling injustice !

Actually, Salah gained a penalty last week v West Brom that the referee didn't originally give either and he also did a good impression of being shot when the (admitted) foul was just being pulled back by the shoulder from a standing position.

The commentator also said that Liverpool players were insisting the ref refer it to VAR, which he also said they should not do.

What goes around...

Linemans had a great game. The first pen, not sure if you see it but the ref did, VVD touches the ball through to Kane thus he is onside. Kane is going down but karius wiped him out anyway. The second Pen, we sit here behind our monitors and bemoan linesmen and refs for not making decisions. But this one was spot on and top officiating. Had the balls to stick to his conviction despite the ref waving it off initially. Lino in a better position to see VVD got none of the ball and all of the player. Lamella did go down like he'd been shot in the leg but it's a clear penalty. For once i think they deserver praise because it's given us the correct result.

Salah is some player, did wait around for an non existant handball, got on with play and scored a cracker. If liverpool ever sort out there defence and some of the midfield they will be title challengers, hopefully not.
I’d agree with all of this apart from the second being a “clear” pen. With the benefit of replays, VVD didn’t touch Lamela and it’s therefore a dive, not a pen. Saying that, the linesman can only go off what he saw and It took me 5 replays before I didn’t consider it a penalty.

It’s a fair result. We were practically begging them to equalise in the second half. Our final ball was poor through out also.

There is VAR and there is there is the referee allowing the linesman to overrule him. You're referring to the former. I'm referring to the latter.

As pointed out above by Shane, had VAR been used here it would have been seen there was no contact and no penalty. Still, it's over and that's the end of it.

The replay clearly shows that he kicked him.

he clearly booted him in the back of the leg like. he didn't pull his knee back, his knee moves like that because he just booted the fuck out of a leg. lamela is a pussy ofc but it's a foul with or without the rolling around.

imo and that.

Are people actually watching the same replay I am? Bizarre. I'm the first to accept when we have given away a foul or penalty, and I even accept from a distance that could be construed as a penalty for the linesman. But to watch the second replay in the video EG posted and to then say he 'booted' him is odd when it's clear if there was contact it was absolute minimal and Lamela made an absolute meal of it and knew precisely what he was doing.

Oh well.

yes pags mate, i am. seen a few different replays of it now and he definitely kicks him in the back of the leg, which is always a foul nowadays. agree about lamela milking it, already called him a name and that for you mate. great catch by the lino imo and brave of him to call it.

A kick in the area is a foul and a penalty. We agree on that at least.

first pen should have been retaken btw, as liverpools keeper was off his line. lucky escape all things considered pags mate.

i don't understand the first pen being given though. if, as dermot gallagher said, it was given despite kane being offside because lovren deliberately tried to clear it, the surely it should be called as offside anyway, as the reason he's trying to clear it is because kane is right behind him and therefore interfering with play?
