Be fine by me. Hodgson is doing as expected with the current talent pool at his disposal I reckon. A lot of English fans just don't seem to be able to come to terms with the fact we are not on a par with the powerhouses of international football at the moment.

We perform about as well as the USA do in tournaments with significantly more talent at our disposal. I don't think we're good enough to be winning tournaments, but when was the last time we beat a top side in knock-out football? Decades ago?

That is a fair point EG. Euro96?

However, I think it's worth noting that with a better calibre of squad we were eliminated by probably the most talented Portugal squad ever on pens on two occasions and narrowly lost to the eventual World Cup champions in 2002. I won't argue that performances at 2010, 2012 and 2014 were not up to scratch (though 2012 was again a curse of the penalty shootout situation) but I do believe that we're not currently underperforming by any stretch of the imagination.

When we did the Spaniards though we were pretty lucky. They scored in extra time and it was incorrectly judged offside. And the Spaniards weren't even a top team then. Probably on par with us really rather than the difference between us today.

Spain looked good that tournament and were rather unlucky going out the way they did. England can't beat a top side when they are away from home, why are they so mentally weak; all those ex-players saying how they'd run through walls for their country, yet when it really mattered they flopped.

Funny to think it now but Spain were the perennial underachievers. To a far worse degree than England ever have been.

Well there is being beaten and just having a bad day but that was awful!

We lacked any ideas and basic ability.

Neville's gone as well - his stock really has fallen this year. Maybe he should stick to Salford.

Oh well the only positive about being so woeful at this tournament is that the dinosaur himself has 'resigned'. Not like his contract was up anyway.

Please get Eddie Howe and give him years not just one World Cup and a Euro's and let him work with this young team.

Thoroughly expect Southgate to get it though. Yes man

I'm of the same opinion regarding Howe, Pardew like Harry has got to much history and Southgate and Neville FA yes men with no experience.
The people at the FA responsible for hiring the England manager should go as well before a replacement is decided upon.
Big Sam is an option no way would you get the performances witnessed at this tournament with him in charge, knows how to build a team with spirit and passion.

Not hearing much from all those that said what a good team we selected and how well we had played in this tournament, not to mention the people who were predicting a big win. Talk as much bull as Roy himself.

Think I'm the only one who wouldn't mind Allardyce tbh. Though Carroll playing every game could well get old fast.

Carroll should have been in the Squad to begin with, not to play every game but as an option. Noble Drinkwater Townsend all playing there socks off and we take Sterling Henderson Barkley and Milner.

Oh I don't deny that, I do deny that he should start every game and have it lumped up to him though.

I'd love Allardyce as manager. Carroll too, fuck all this terrible " playing out from the back" . I like it best when we have defenders who know how to launch it into the mixer. Midfielders and defenders should know their place and strikers should always be a lump knocking down balls for a nippy fucker with a bit of agg and an eye for a finish. Ideally he'd have a tragic backstory too.

Agreed, one of the worst things about last night was the lack of urgency to get the ball forward. The slow, build-up from the back doesn't suit us, and if we were so insistent on adopting this style, it beggars belief that Stones wasn't in the side really.

Regarding the title, didn't he resign rather than get sacked?

.
Resignation as a result of a concrete certainty no new contract would be offered is probably more accurate. But you're right, he wasn't actually sacked.

People moaning about Hodgson and then wanting Allardyce *facepalm*

If Southgate or Allardyce get it then I'm done with the national team.

Allardyce could well end up being a bad appointment if it happens and he wouldn't be my first choice. But I don't see the connection you're attempting to make. As individuals and as managers they're pretty much as different as it's possible to be.

Just that they are equally ill-suited to the job. Allardyce is only good for teams who are fighting relegation in the Premier League. He'd be about as good an international manager as Simon Grayson.
