I dont know if anyone is particularly interested but with things like expected goals creeping into the norm now this website is useful but looking at how your teams are performing.

I know Brentford are massively interested in this side of things and are generally not worried when they are performing badly as long as the metrics are in their favour.

It appears Wigan have been the best team performance wise this season and we have been the worst (not ideal we play them away tomorrow).

So we have been performing much better than our results suggest according to this. Pretty sure fans of most of the side we've played would agree with this bar Rotherham

Just shows how incredible Wallace, McArdle and Gilks have been for us. "The Iron have soaked up over 30 shots for each goal that their opponents have scored, which is very unlikely to be sustainable." Really can't imagine that's gonna last.

It's easy to spin a tale with stats. We have a 54%win ratio for Tuesday night games over the last 2 years. Doesn't do.our league position any good though overall.

That said, this makes it look like we are poor in front of goal yet we are anything but this season. 3 past Charlton 3 past bristol 2 past Fleetwood etc. In fact it's rare we don't score these days

I agree that you can prove anything you want with stats and people use them to suit there own agendas usually. Its not suggesting you guys have been poor in front of goal, more perhaps that based on current chances created you wont keep scoring at that rate.

I follow Ben Mayhew who does these and we scored very highly all through last season but finished 5th and ultimately lost in the play-off final. This year, it's early days but we look better going forward and we are rated much worse in almost all the categories. They definitely seem to favour teams who keep a lot of the ball and thus face not very many shots compared to shots they get away, which is what Wigan are doing I presume.

That being said I expect Wigan to win the league.

Stats can be skewed, but it's worth mentioning that for the League 2 version of this last year, we were at the top of pretty much every chart for most of the season, even though we only really broke into the automatic places in the last few games, and occupied top spot for less than 90 minutes (lol). The league table did seem to level out with the stats as the season came to a close, so I do take a fair amount of stock in these. Either way, they're really interesting.

So... we are a top half side and will climb the table according to the metrics ha ha ha
Shame they are nothing like we are having to watch. At present we will be extremely lucky to stay up come May.

It's easy to spin a tale with stats but I reckon you'd have to be pretty bloody stupid to place any trust in the stat you quoted.

Relying on bad stats or interpreting them like an idiot will leave you stranded but you can say that about any approach to anything ever.

Which makes a lot of sense as it essentially grades each shot based on how likely it is to result in a goal and doesn't really do a lot else. One could argue that a team who keeps the ball, has lots of shots and doesn't concede many shots is basically doing good soccer so that would only support it's usefulness.

What I would think it actually punishes is teams that try to walk it in. If you shoot on sight you're going to notch up XG each time but that's not obviously a better strategy than being shot shy, when a nice pass across the goal met by no one contributes nothing to XG for instance.

It's by no means the perfect stat but I think it's better than most of what's out there
