Confirmed 30 September release for Europe. Given there are at least six or seven posters on here who will be playing it soon after release, may as well start a new thread.

Le me get there first: I think it's going to be fucking wank.

be careful, they will try to trick you into thinking this game is going to be any good with an emotionally manipulative cover of a ben king song.

0.35, 1.22 and that dude at 2.06 is what they should be going for.

I played through the demo today. Visually stunning but I'm not sure about the rest of it. The story will be judged once the game is finished (though an anime AND a film starring Sean Bean, Lena Headey and Aaron Paul!? Talk about pushing the boat out!), the combat still feels a bit clunky (why is the square button dodge Surely it should be right stick?) and the camera is amateur based on this showing.

I'll most likely still get it because I'm a fanboy and have finished all the other main titles in the series (unless the reviews are terrible) but the jury is well and truly out.

i wasn't impressed either. mechanically it feels very sluggish. there is a delay to most of your dynamic commands (jump, attack, etc) and the combat system evoked Kingdom Hearts if you sucked all of the fluidity and rhythm out of it -- it's seriously one of the least dynamic fighting systems I've ever played and the hitboxes might as well not exist. hold down circle to keep attacking? fucking piss poor.

talking of similarities to kingdom hearts, this has nomura's muggy fingerprints all over it. the aesthetic, foundation for the combat system, themes, character design, even levels (shrunken character in oversized world: alice in wonderland much) could all have been ripped from previous KH titles. heck, the score even sounds like shimomura's reinterpretation of her work on kingdom hearts.

fix the combat mechanics and then we'll talk. i did appreciate the art design, at least.

Looks absolute fucking shit and I'll probably hate it.

Bet it is.

I agree, I actually liked 13 for all it's flaws.13-2 was actually good but I never played the last one.
I tried the demo and it completely turned me off it, kind of glad since I'd of probs bought it blindly otherwise.

I bit the bullet the other day and pre-ordered this having been impressed with Kingsglaive and Brotherhood. The early signs from the pre-reviews have been good. It seems like the characters go beyond the cliche type despite first impressions of them, the story could be interesting and the open world looks gorgeous. It seems like they've also fixed the clunkiness of the combat system.

I have my fingers crossed.

the reviews aren't going to be anything less than glowing. square-enix have played the gaming press like an excited puppy. almost unfettered access for a couple of years now.

long dev cycle + tired IP + irrelevant themes for this era x square-enix = a load of forgettable shit, again.

Yeah, I'm also seeing a lot of good shit but I can't help but struggle to get excited for it still. That demo was sooooo fucking bad. Looked amazing but I can't think of another bit of praise to give it. Perhaps it gets better as the game goes on but... no. Can't bring myself to preorder yet. No doubt amazing reviews will start to flood in soon and I'll buy it like a fucking mug, but for now... no.

XII, Tactics A2 and the Dissidia games have been enjoyable.

an 8.2 from IGN is never a great sign. They gave Watchdogs 2 8.5 and it's the most 'meh, it's alright' game I've ever played.

I would take everything IGN says with a pinch of salt. Their reviews are pretty terrible normally.

They are, but terrible in a skewed to overrated most of the time. Metacritic is 80 currently which isn't that far above your run of the mill Assassin's Creed type score. This game has been in development for YEARS - it should be getting MGS4, GTA V, Naughty Dog game type hype - instead it seems to be a good game that gets far too much shit wrong like boring linear 2 hour segments and broken cameras in combat.

OK time for some early views. I'd say I'm about 5 hours in:

- Firstly, the combat is far better than I expected having not been too impressed by the demo. Whilst "hold square to dodge and circle to attack" shouldn't really work, it does. The parry system is good, the link-up moves and warp strikes add another tactical edge to the more difficult battles. Magic also plays a bigger part in battle than usual and should be used sparingly given that it can also damage your friends.

- This is going to be a huge game. The map doesn't seem massive but I'm 5 hours in and still only covered the first area. I look forward to seeing more of the world and what it has to offer.

- Not too impressed with the side quests at the moment. They seem a bit too much like your basic "fetch this item" or "kill this monster" without any real variety. Seems a bit mundane so far.

- I'm also not sure about the auto-driving either and when you drive manually, your car sticks to the roads. Still, at least you can get your helping of Member Berries by listening to the soundtracks of previous 1FF games.

- I've already spotted what seems to be a pretty big plot hole. Don't read the following spoiler unless you've got to Galdin Quay and watched the Kingsglaive movie:

How did Noctis and his group not realise that the "stranger" was Chancellor Izunia? If you're a prince, surely it would be your duty to know who the second-in-command of the the fucking biggest empire in the world is? The King certainly knew about him, so he must have told Noct about him at some point. It would be like Prince Charles not knowing who Angela Merkel is FFS!

More thoughts to come.

Yeah, I'm seeing more and more good stuff said about the game. No doubt when held up against previous 1FF games it'll be shite, but I'm getting the feeling that it'll be a fine game by its own right. Pretty sure I'll end up with this on my Xmas list... even though I did hate the demo. Though, as I said at the time, I was open minded to the idea that the full game could improve a lot upon it... and it seems that it has.

Fuck it though, I didn't even mind FF13 that much. I'm sure I'll be fine with XV...

I know it's early days but I think this will be better than XIII. Just had my first death though after deciding to take on monsters 20 levels higher than me. Fail.

Some more thoughts:

- The combat is still the best thing about this game. So much so that I hope the FFVII remake is something similar only with more emphasis on growing materia and the ability to switch playable party members. The level scaling also seems to be near spot on and it's so satisfying that the previous Iron Giants I had to run away from at night time can now be taken down. Saying that, Red Giants seem to be appearing and they now own my ass.

- The auto-driving makes more sense now, as off-road travel on the overworld is best done by Chocobo. This adds some extra depth to exploration and works surprisingly well.

- I've not really mentioned the characters too much but despite the fact they all fit into various tropes, they aren't actually that bad and can be quite endearing at times when they aren't spouting the same repetitive shit over and over. Whilst none of these characters are likely to be as memorable as the likes of Cloud, Auron or Balthier - none of them should end up being as bad as the likes of pretty much all the cast of FFXIII. Noctis is a solid lead and so far seems better than Lightning, Vaan and Tidus.

- The plot still seems a bit thin and, maybe it's just my nature as a wannabe author, but I'm picking holes in it as if it were Edam. I'm expecting some retcons in the future but baring in mind I'm 6 chapters and 24 hours in, not a lot is making much sense. The side quests (barring one or two exceptions) are still mediocre and lacking inventiveness for the most part.

- Finally, some people have been bitching about the soundtrack but I think it's pretty good. FFXV certainly boasts some of the best battle themes in the series.

More to come.

I'm ploughing through this game now but I've just seen the coolest monster ever.

Sith Lord Master Tonberry! Complete with Palpatine robe and lightsabre! Wish I'd taken a photo!

I like it. Played about 7 hours but am still only up to chapter 2. Mind you, I've really taken my time with it and done many of the side-quests.

Combat wise, I'm getting used to it. I'd still prefer turn based but this is growing on me. It's fast paced but once you get the hang of it, you start to understand the tactical elements and how you can vary the way you go into battle.

Side quests are a bit simple so far but they're easing me into the game and allowing me to familiarise myself with the world. And the world is gorgeous. I love exploring it.

The characters are all very easy to like and the little personal features help you get to know them better.

Story wise, it's all a bit thin so far and I'm not expecting it to become overly clear judging from reviews.

So far, I'd recommend the buy. It won't be a classic 1FF but I think it could well pave the way for classics in the future with the new vibe to it.
