There is only so much even a great defender can do with our shit back line, especially this soon. I'm surprised I need to point that out (although not with the Southampton fans who for obvious reasons will be looking for any excuse to point and laugh). He has had a good start all things considered, and has looked our most commanding presence as expected and scored from a set piece on his debut - 1 goal in 4 appearances for a defender isn't too bad contrary to the chimp's comment. A few mistakes but given that he's adjusting to new team mates isn't a surprise.

All in all, not as bad as others are predictably trying to make out. Haters will be haters I guess.

Well once again it's the non Lfc ppl who are slagging VVD so nothing new or surprising . What I'm not reading is Lpool supporters being upset with Virgil , I'm certainly not . The guy is a quality cb who will absolutely improve the team..... end of .

Carry on , then .

Yes its everyone against LFC. Not just that some people don't consider he's done anything noteworthy to be described as "excellent" or similarly ott adulation based on the fact he's just been more vocal at the back than your other defenders.

Who said its everyone against Lfc? Are you ? The point is that few LFC supporters that I can see share the same worries or concerns some of you lot seem to. The guy has been with the club for 5 mins , is still learning the system and his team mates and generally settling in but just watching the way he plays you'd have to be blind to not see the quality he has . He'll be fine and I expect he'll also be an important player for us for many years to come.

Football fans aren't known as the most level-headed, objective analysers of players that play for their own clubs (just listen to Bilo talk about Lucas Leiva for more than thirty seconds). I'd dare to say that Liverpool fans are amongst the worst for this, actually (just listen to Bilo talk about Lucas Leiva or Saltire talk about Mignolet and Karius for more than thirty seconds). I'd much rather hear a neutral's opinion on Van Dijk than a rose-tinted, club-sponsored one.

You've basically dismissed the opinion of any non lfc fan in VvD in your previous post. If you want people to just tell you what you want to hear perhaps a Liverpool forum would make better reading.
And people arent "slagging" him off, they're just not sucking him off. If he has an Alderweireld effect on the defence then talking him up to this extent would be justified. As is, it ain't.

Yep, I'm dismissing pretty much any negative opinion made on a player after four games.

I've been around long enough to know that it's a rare thing on football forums to find a true neutral giving an unbiased opinion .

Put it this way . I don't worry too much about a player either way after four games. Give him time to settle then start analysing what he doing well or not .

Have you seen some of the positive comments Salah and Dr Bruyne have been getting from neutrals and even rival fans on here?

Van Dijk is a very good defender. He may also be the most expensive defender in the history of football with many wishing him to flop but if he performs excellently he'll be praised.

Indeed just remember when Ox signed it was the beginning of the downfall according to some. A bit quieter now that he's beginning to perform. Same with VVD. No other club gets treated like that.

It's so true though and you know it which is why you didn't give one of your pithy retorts.

It doesn't deserve one!*

I don't like the victim tag Liverpool fans get (because of certain connotations it has that I don't like making light of) but you and Speker are coming across like a right couple of persecution-complex dafties here.

*That's a mini one, I suppose.

I'll give you three players as examples then. When we signed Salah most of the fans from other clubs said he'd flop because he didn't succeed at Chelsea. Wijnaldum was the same when we got him from relegated Newcastle, 25 mill was way too much money for such an average player we were told. Oxlade Chamberlain was utter shit Arsenal fans told us and backed up by many other posters and 40 mill was ludicrous money for him. Same now with VVD.

When big players sign with all the rest of the top six, it's a out what they'll bring to those sides and how they'll improve them. When Liverpool sign a big player it's how much he'll flop and how he isn't good enough to get in the other sides. So predictable.

Martial, Pogba and Sanchez were all wastes of money and Lukaku was nothing but a donkey.

John Stones was an awful defender, so were Walker and Mangala (fair point on that one). All massively inflated fees.

Just a couple of clubs getting the same treatment as examples.

Not much of a dare. We've already established only Kevin De Bruyne has stopped him being the best player in the Prem so far this season. I reckon you'd struggle to name 4 other footballers who are currently playing better than him in Europe.

Nah. And Kane hasn't. He's only got one more goal and 6 less assists. Salah has had the better season so far.
