Good signing, £30 million really isn't that much for young talented English players at the moment. He showed very promising signs last year, he looks like a very good shot stopper with fantastic distribution, though it's hard to evaluate someone that was behind such a porous defence. Most keepers look like great shot stoppers when they are pelted with shots from kick-off to the final whistle. If he turns out to be a decent keeper for Everton, £30 million will look like nothing in 5 years time, especially for a 23 year old. I think almost anyone is an upgrade on Robles.

£30m is ridiculous, he's played 29 top flight games, he will be the third most expensive keeper ever, lunacy.

Adjusting for the huge inflation in transfer fees the past few seasons, £30 million probably equates to something closer to £10 million when Buffon broke the transfer record for goalkeepers. Raheem Sterling and John Stones cost close to £50 million, Jordan Ibe costs £15 million, it's a very different landscape. That he may become the third most expensive keeper ever isn't a pertinent statistic any more. If De Gea is sold, he will go for £70+ million at least.

Goalkeeper is a pretty unique position in that there aren't that many high-profile transfers of keepers, at least not in the middle of their careers when they will demand a bigger transfer fee. The top keepers are either snapped up very young or they seem to already be at top clubs and stay there for the duration of their careers. This also explains the bizarre statistic that he may be the third most expensive keeper of all-time.

Note the best keepers of the last 5-10 years - Neuer (bought at 24/25, deflated fee due to Bayern hegemony), Casillas (long-term Madrid), Buffon (long-term Juve after massive transfer fee in 2001), De Gea (purchased for deflated fee at 21), Courtois (bought by Chelsea as a youth). Petr Cech is the anomaly, going for a pretty insane £11 million after losing his spot to Courtois. Only Buffon has really impacted the list of the world's most expensive keepers and that was 16 years ago.

30m is way too much, but then we all know the horse bolted long ago on inflated transfer fees in this league. Everton will need to persist with Pickford over a number of years to get that back into some sense of value for money. A big headline grabbing fee does bring it's own pressures which isn't ideal. It'd be better if he could quietly move and settle in without more hype.

How good an all round keeper he really is / could become, needs more time and scrutiny, ideally in a side slightly better than Sunderland. As such Everton is a decent move for him. Stekelenburg should be an ideal role model, mentor and competitor. Robles hasn't pulled up any trees and Pickford immediately goes in above him you'd imagine.

A good signing for Everton and one that, as others have mentioned, won't raise eyebrows in terms of the fee if they hold on to him for a long time and he delivers on his potential.

He can't be any worse than the last Sunderland keeper that moved to Merseyside.

£30m for someone who could potentially be our keeper for the next 15 years. Goalkeeper is one of the positions we really needed to improve on so I'm glad we're trying to get this done as soon as possible.

Sandro Ramirez for £5.2m looks like it's on the cards too, had a good record in Spain last season and is young as well. Encouraging signs so far

Oh the one that was excellent last season you mean?

No, the one who had a purple patch through part of last season (not for the first time) and who I fully expect to revert to form in the near future. We've been here, seen it and done it though Salty, no point in going around in circles. In short, you rate him and have full confidence in his ability for a team of our ambitions. I don't.

Niang going to Everton it seems..

Maybe Koeman can get the best out of him because he was very hot and cold with us albeit played out of position in a defensive side.

Davy Klaassen signed for €27m, hours after Pickford is signed for a rumoured £30m.

Feels mad spending £50m+ in a day

Davy Klaassen is a good signing. He's 25 so he won't develop much more but he works hard, is very determined and will get goals. Scored 14 from 33 in the Eeredivisie as a number ten. Reminds me a bit of a central Kuyt to be honest. He's very much captain material as well, huge loss for Ajax.

With Joe Harts fall from grace I can only assume Pickford has taken over the mantle of Emperors New Clothes.

He started the preceding season behind Vito Mannone and, following injury, first choice keeper at the team with the 3rd worst defensive record in the league.

He had an absolutely shocking error at the start of the season which cost his team two points, if I remember correctly.

It's a terrible signing, for an outrageously inflated fee.

I said the exact same about John Stones and look forward to being equally vindicated in the season to come.

I saw he managed a nomination for the YPOTY - which implies someone like Garth Crooks is on the panel deciding nominees.

Indeed, to suggest alternatives, Heaton and Begovic are far better players who could have been purchased for significantly less.

Hahahhahaha.

Pickford is incredible. You're talking absolute shite.

Poor JohnnyTodd. Finally had something to talk about regarding Everton but has found his ass banned. I'd call it a shame but I'd be lying.

His save percentage was exactly the same as Robles last season.

He kept 4 clean sheets in 31 appearances.

Against Southampton at the start of the season his 85th minute error cost Sunderland 2 points.

There is only so much you can blame on a poor defence - nothing about Pickford is incredible.

Name me one keeper who hasn't made a mistake in their career, I'll wait.

I watched Pickford for most of a season for us and I can tell you now, he has everything. As Chris Kirkland said this week, if he doesn't become the best in the world, he only has himself to blame.

Another reason for why Pickford is slightly overrated is that it had to take an injury to Vito Mannone last season before he became Sunderland's first choice.

Yes, the awful Mannone started ahead of him at the beginning of last season. Plus he was 22 too, not like it was throwing a young teen to the lions.

Sunderland weren't exactly thriving either, should have broke though sooner.

You watched England vs Sweden in the U21's mate? Pickford was the only reason they got a draw against the reigning champions. We won it two years ago because we popped out a shitload of children in 1994-1996 so that we got one golden generation. Only way to do it really.

Ramirez all but announced, Keane having a medical today, impressed with our signings so far.

Giroud and Rooney also linked. I'd be very happy with Giroud, Rooney could potentially be the worst transfer ever
