Hello friends. I'm in the market for a new desktop PC but have sadly been out of the game since my parents bought me a Compaq Presario in 2001. I've had laptops ever since. Point is, I don't know what I'm doing, so I need help.

I'm looking for something that is quick, reliable, good at playing games and has plenty of storage.

Yeah budget would help. And when you say games do you mean the latest graphics intensive games, or just stuff like Footy Manager?

Build one. Generally cheaper, better components, and it is simpler than ever to do so. For a pre-built, as people have said, budget is essential.

Can't be arsed doing that.

Yup. Erm, in terms of what you want, you can get any old Keyboard/Mouse to be honest, if you're not going to be doing serious gaming. In terms of a monitor, this is decent enough tbh. HD, has all of the inputs you really need, no problem. For mouse and keyboard combinations, have a nose on Amazon, I've got a gaming mouse and normal keyboard, but I do a fair bit of PC gaming, so the mouse is very useful. To be honest, I'd recommend a normal gaming mouse (not a big flashy thing) to anyone, much more comfortable to use if you're going to be on the PC for extended periods of time. But either which way, if you're buying a monitor and PC from PC World, just have a nose through their peripherals and pick the ones you like tbh.

Definitely get a gaming mouse, no reason not to IMO. I find them to have better sizing for comfort, and programmable buttons helps a lot (I have a couple right next to my thumb just for going forward/back on the internet). You'll barely pay anymore too.

My Desktop is slowly on it's way out and I've been looking into getting a PC capable of playing triple a titles but I honestly don't know where to start looking.

Any advice? Not really sure what kind of budget I should be looking at?

For AAA's you need some serious power under the hood, really would stress to build your own in this case, as the kind of graphics card you want at a minimum is around £200 in itself. Although THIS is a bargain tbf.

Using some of the specs from the computer Jase showed me I found this:

http://www.very.co.uk/zoostorm-temp...soft-office-365-personal-black/1600020161.prd

Is that a good one? I know fuck all about processors and that.

Me and AMD don't get along, but I know a lot of people who love it and have had great experiences with them. Looks a good rig, and a bargain getting the monitor and peripherals with it for that price to be fair.

I'm also in the market for a new PC at the moment. Would the computer Christian posted play most games fairly easy? Mainly interested in your Civs, total war, FMs etc rather than crazy FPS. Not a bad price that To be fair.

For Warhammer (the most recent of the kind of games you're after), you'd need a dedicated graphics card, so yeah, his would do it with the addition of a graphics card which would set you back a further £120 odd. So might be best with the one I recommended to Jamie really, rather than the big extra payout of the £120 when you could probably get the monitor + peripherals cheaper altogether with the one I recommended to him.

Would this do the same as you suggested to Jamie?

I didn't intend to buy one for games, but I'm starting to think why not?

I've seen some with 4gb and 6gb graphics cards. How much difference would they make?

Yep, that'd do pretty much the same job.

Erm, in terms of the 4-6gb graphics cards, it depends on the card itself to be honest, for example you could get a AMD Radeon R9 390 8GB graphics card, and it would be slightly worse than a Nvidia Geforce GTX 960 4GB. Don't pay much attention to the memory on the graphics card generally. The best card on the market currently does have 8GB, but it has the insides to back it (GTX 1080, selling at around £600 currently...). But yeah, basically, bigger doesn't always mean better.

For example, the graphics card in that PC is still the 26th best on the market (and believe me, that's no mean feat, the one I have doesn't scratch the surface). The GTX 960 in that will run pretty much anything you throw at it, including stuff like GTA V. The thing that would limit you from things like GTA V with that PC is the processor, it's a good one that will run the majority of stuff, but being only a dual core in the top games market now is a severe limitation. You generally want a quad core. On the bright side, if you did get that and decided you wanted to upgrade the processor in the future, it is a piece of piss to do.

Cheers Jase, I've always been told it's better to build your own when wanting a PC for gaming but I really ain't clued up when it comes to the specs and stuff, tempted with that one you linked. Looks like it's had some good reviews, only downside seems to be no wireless card.

Can always get a long ethernet cable, dependant upon where your router is (mine is only over the other side of the room, so this is what I did), buy a wireless card for £10-£20, oooor get a USB wireless adapter for £5-£20ish. I'd personally go for the USB or Ethernet option, as wireless cards are generally ugly fucking things.

Those aerials would be sticking out of the back of your PC versus something like;

sticking out of one of your USB ports at the back of the PC...

Wait, a near £600 computer doesn't have wireless capabilities?

I bought this one you quoted today. It is a quad core. Bought it on a "pay nothing for 12 months" deal.

Thanks for the help Jase!

USB wireless adapters are to be avoided unless you have no option (ie a laptop without wireless and no PCMCIA slot). Ideally you should connect direct with a cat 5 but if wireless has to be used on a desktop then PCI is the way to go, it would be more reliable as the bus is more direct.

I made do with a USB wireless adapter when I moved house and it was unstable to say the least. Then again I was using the free BT wifi thing so perhaps it was that.

A guid dram
I've been needing a new case for my pc for some years now, I don't have a power button on the front as it broke off, and for a while I was using a screwdriver on the mobo to start it up daily! Now I use a wake-up LAN thing from my phone to switch it on, but I really should get a new case. The trouble is if I'm going down that road I may as well build a new one, and I can't be arsed doing that these days. :D
