Jim Bentley has emerged as bookie's favourite. Of all the ones linked with us so far, if I had to choose I'd go with him. I think he'd keep us up, and he's used to dealing with a small budget. There haven't been any rumours I've heard that he might leave Morecambe but it sounds like their fans are tiring of him and would probably be happy to see him go.
Curle has confirmed that we will be operating on a much smaller budget next season and are unlikely to feature in any promotion shenanigans, and that was his reason for leaving (although he was also probably not expecting to be offered a contract, he had previously indicated his willingness to stay on and if the board tried to keep him at all they won't have pulled out all if any of the stops).
The expectation from many fans is that our board are so tight that they will most likely give the job to academy manager Darren Edmondson. If 'cutting their cloth to fit' is really their number one priority then they would be wise to appoint someone like Bentley instead, his wages might be higher but they're less likely to have to sack him mid-season or start desperately bringing in overpriced crap players in an attempt to avoid relegation.
I can't think of any situation where a young inexperienced manager has come in and done well at a struggling club. You have the likes of Jones, Cowley, Hasselbaink and Nolan who have done well at clubs where the pressure was off a bit, allowing them to flourish, but at the other end of the spectrum you get situations like with Lester, Eames, Hignett and Riza; where they aren't really seen as incompetent and totally responsible by the fans for their team's demise, but rather just seem to be the wrong manager at the wrong time, lacking the experience for the relegation dogfight. Only Ainsworth I can think of has done well, and that's only because Wycombe stuck with him after coming so close to going down, so that could easily have gone the same way as the others. So while some of the managers linked to us would be popular appointments, Aranalde, Murphy etc. We just need someone with experience to keep us up.*
