Our home forum is asking fans what was the biggest away following you ever saw at The Shay. Obviously they all saw the 2000 Chorley fans that came to the promotion final in 2017 but some remember Stockport bringing 3000 in the '80's and others still go back to 7000 Man U fans who bought tickets for the Watney Cup tie in 1971, although nobody counted how many piled in after they kicked down the main gates and took over the Skircoat Stand. There were 5000 tickets sold to Man city fans in 1980, but there were probably more than that from Huddersfield on the preceding Boxing Day a week earlier, when it was pay on the gate. There are no records or estimates for how many came from Stoke or Spurs for the FA Cup ties in 1953 (there are a few Shaymen still alive who were there), when more than 35,000 attended at both games, but I'd expect they were well into 4 figures.

What's the biggest away following in your time, at your club? :ds:

Southampton and Norwich both brought around 3k when we played them in League One between 2009-2011. They both completely filled one side of our ground.

When we had terracing Gillingham and Birmingham both brought around 3500 back in the mid 90s from memory.

Biggest away following I've ever seen at any game was when Poland sold 18k tickets at Wembley, when England beat Poland 2-0 to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, only time I've ever seen Wembley Way resemble a warzone before any game.

Sunderland, Man City and Middlesborough (IIRC) have all brought 5-6k in Div 1 to post-redevelopment Prenton Park, as we gave them our whole Kop stand.

Nice one, but when Scotland came to Wembley in 1973, it was reckoned there were only 30k Englishmen in the 100,000 crowd. I think they'd even tried to restrict ticket sales to Scottish fans beforehand....:eyes:

Your biggest crowd at the Shay in recent years must have been Tonga v Italy - over 10,000 I think. I think Tonga had bigger support than we did for the play-off semi.

Ground Capacity is around 3,600. They must have had about 3,000 on that day!

We're talking about club football here, rather than international rugby, when tickets were priced at a fiver and less, and even given away. Plus, technically, both teams were playing away, so they were ALL away supporters.

Didn’t Bradford bring about 4,000 to The Shay a few years back in the FA Cup?

Biggest I’ve seen at Gigg Lane is Swansea with 5,000 in 2005 and Sheffield United 3,700 in 2012.

Limited space with us at our current place but I think it's Rushden & Diamonds on the day they finally got promoted out of the Conference.

No idea before my time and in to Sealand Road days though.

For the final game of the 1995-96 season Sunderland were given the entire Kop and The Johnny King Stand. They must have had 8,000 fans that day.

I was at Feethams in 1982 for the visit of over 11,000 travelling Sheffield Utd fans when they went up as division four champions. I just got carried to the tin shed and said thanks :surr:

I remember Sunderland taking over The Racecourse, I think it was 1979 .. their promotion party to what would now be the premier league. Not sure how many they brought that day .. just that they seemed to take over all stands.

Our biggest away crowd this century won't be much more than about 1,000 given the size of the ground. But Barrow took 8,000+ to the Riverside to play Middlesbrough when they were in the Premiership, which I believe is their record away attendance!

Biggest I’ve seen is the 3k+ brought by the likes of Leeds, Leicester, Southampton and Norwich.

Would imagine our record was set during our record attendance (c.36,000) vs. West Ham, where the spammers would have had over half the crowd.

Believe we are the proud owners of record away attendances at The Valley, Craven Cottage, The Emirates and the Kassam Stadium (where we pissed on their Nans and stole ice cream from children, but that’s another story).

Before my time but having seen pictures of it that was the one that sprung to mind.

Most I've seen myself is probably Gillingham in 2000 when they'd have got promotion with a win but we beat them 1-0.

3500, Bradford in 2014 in the FA Cup. Historically, that will be relatively small for them as they're only 10 miles up the road. There was a time when we practically lived in each others pockets, to the extant that some on their forum at the time of the cup tie, were advising younger fans to "forget Leeds or Huddersfield, THIS is our real derby match". Unlike those 2 clubs, who usually voted to have us booted out of the League, City were always our greatest friend in need, and in many ways, still are. :hail:

In my time, we had Celtic in a pre-season friendly who brought about 3,000, I think.

Competitive game, Forest in the FA Cup back in the mid-00's, which was around 2,300.

We've been restricted in recent years with what we can give to away fans, but Luton had around 1,800 here one season. Dover also had a similar amount for the Play-off final IIRC.

I presume somebody is bound to have brought more in years gone by.

It was 2500, originally given 1500 then another 500 twice, then asked for more but were refused.

Most I’ve seen at Blundell Park was Bolton opening day 94/95, no idea how many but rammed in like sardines, only other times I remember it similar was Villa in the cup in 1994, always remember when Villa got their winner a couple of their fans on top of the fence in the Osmond, and Newcastle’s promotion party in 1993 when their fans were in every stand, packed out Osmond and had loads more in the home ends too:

My dad tells me about this one all the time, how our fans invaded the pitch thinking we'd been promoted only for a very late Stoke goal to keep us in the division. He reckons around 10,000 Sunderland that day but he's not the most reliable source for away figures, sure the figure of our relegation at Maine Road in 1991 has doubled in the last year.

Anyway some old fashioned "limbs" just after the 3 minute mark:

In terms of us I remember Everton bringing about 7,000 up for a cup replay which we completely bottled, it was back when the away fans were behind the goal, something that was changed probably in part to that night.

Other than that can remember Barrow, Leeds, Manchester United and Boro bringing around 5,000.

We’ve given part of the East Stand to a few teams in recent years meaning some clubs have had 2500 at our place - Sheff Wednesday, Sheffield United, Grimsby spring to mind as all selling it out or at least getting close.

At Saltergate kids sold out the away end including the above + Forest, Westham and others. Man City bought shit loads in the league about 2000 when they won the old Div 2. Was trouble all over the place

Biggest I’ve seen is take away - 5500 to Derby. 4000+ to Sheffield Wednesday on more than one occasion. Sheffield United let us have 5000 odd at Bramall Lane when we were in the League 1 play offs. Had 3800 at Forest also on New Year’s Eve.

Not a biggy but Had around 1500 at Torquay one Friday night in the promotion season. That stands out because of how far it is, I think everyone stayed over and it was a proper good weekend.

Bit depressing considering where we are at now.

Biggest in recent years would be Luton and Portsmouth who both brought around 2,500. But I can remember Fulham in particular having the whole of our old away end and the whole of the Habbin terrace opposite the main stand in about 96ish when they were promoted. Would have been more like 3,000. Newcastle in 93 would have been similar too.

Our record attendance is 12,000 v Chelsea and I’ll bet there were more than 3,000 Chelsea fans there that day.

We used to play Arsenal in an annual pre-season friendly and Arsenal would pretty much make up the entire ground due to rip off ticket prices. 5,000 or so of them every season.

I think most of us Barnet fans would go to this match once and decide that we didn't need to experience it again!
In terms of competitive matches at the Hive, Luton have brought the most at about 2,200. I have no idea who would take this record for Underhill but the infamous Burnley match in 91/92 where the much derided reported attendance was 4800 (but there seemed to be twice as many people inside the ground) must be a contender. I'm not sure if I can recall anyone bringing more than 1600 to Underhill (Portsmouth in the FA Cup in 90/91, Southend in the FA Cup in 05/06, Leyton Orient in 05/06). Any others?

Bristol Rovers brought 2,000 a few years ago, with another 100 or so locked outside (started off as 100 locked out, rose to about 10,000 a few days later to emphasise how we were a DISGRACE for not letting them in a full away end).

Aldershot brought about 1,500 a couple of times - once officially and once when we claimed there was only 1,000 of them.

For the Burnley game go to the 1 hour, 1 minute 35 mark...

Burnley fans were packed in like sardines but I don't know what the capacity of that part of the terrace was back then. Not sure it beats Luton's 2,200 but it must've been fairly close.

Lincoln had somewhere around 2200-2500 against us in a couple of the league games. 2000 on the town end and a couple hundred or more in seats

Dad tells me sheff utd had 4k in the cup in the early 80s and tells me the gate was much higher than the 5800 declared

Since falling out of the league, Kettering took about 600 or so and Cambridge brought 500 or more in an fa cup tie. That's about it

Last day of 89/90, we were in with a chance of automatic promotion but needed results elsewhere to go our way (they didn't) (vid here)

Went on to lose 4-0 away to Chesterfield in the first leg of the playoffs a week later (which just goes to show that there's no advantage to finishing higher under that system; the new one we have is much better IMO)

During my time following County I've seen us allocate about 3,500 to the opposition several times, never more than that though. Some of the times we played City there were plenty of them in the home sections, no surprise since everyone knows they're all from 'round here anyway.
