Who should be in goal for England this summer?

Who is best equipped to not make bloopers in Russia?

What is everyone's opinion then? Southgate called up 4 goalkeepers and has confirmed that the place is up for grabs. If you were Gareth Southgate, who would you start?

I'd got with Pope because he's playing for a side having a good season that has confidence in its strengths and weaknesses.

As long as it isn't Joe Hart I'm not too bothered. Pope deserves at least 1 lot of 90 minutes from these friendlies but even then I don't think he'll be picked first game even if he's the one with the best form.

Jordan Pickford without a doubt for me. He is the one with the most ability by far. Yes he has made a few errors but they have only been small ones and not clangers like Butland/Hart. Also he has been badly let down by the defenders in front of him. Dread to think of how many they would have conceded without him.

Am I thinking of Pickford when I see a goalkeeper with horrible distribution with his feet (not his hands)?

Or am I thinking of someone else entirely?

I like Pickford but I'll be happy enough so long as Hart doesn't play.

They're all a bit wank to be fair, Hart has a calamity in him but the other three have only stood out for poor sides facing a lot of shots on goal, as I've always said on here, concentration separates good goalkeepers from average ones.

Hart - as said has a calamity in him, but he's experienced and certainly has the concentration, dropped off the boil last few years, the new David James

Pope - Great shot stopper, OK distribution, but he's really only a back up keeper for a poor side until this season

Butland - Has the qualities, great shot stopper again, shit distribution and we are still yet to see his concentration levels as he's always played for shit.

Pickford - Decent shot stopper but can only parry a ball. Good distribution but got a tad overrated at Sunderland before not standing out at Everton

I pick Butland.

Joe Hart should get the number 1 jersey I think after his great showing for West Ham last night against Stoke.

Yes just give him it now there is no need to debate this!

Still surprised that Pickford is leading this. Would be my 3rd choice behind Pope and Butland.

But Hart has experience and he looked really good back in 2012ish.

It's important to note at the start of this season on this site Joe Hart was being praised as an excellent signing for West Ham.

I've been of the opinion he was a terrible player for some time, and glad this has finally come out to be clear.

The next one I'm calling out as not being good enough at this level? Kyle Walker - his career will go down the Glen Johnson route soon enough.

As for the question at hand, England have missed a massive trick not playing Mee and Tarkowski ahead of Pope. Same as when they had a complete Arsenal defence they didn't play together.

Three players on form but an unglamarous club.

As it is, I can see them starting with Butland, Stones and Smalling - with Walker and some no mark like Betrand at left back.

It will be a disaster.

No, Pickford's kicking can be pretty outstanding, one of his main assets.

He's easily the best of the bunch for me and will get better.

But i'm the same as everyone else, anyone but Joe Hart please.

Really? I'm not doubting you but he went downhill long before this summer and didn't pull up any trees at Torino, hard to imagine anyone using the word 'excellent'. The guy wouldn't look out of place in the Championship these days.

He's had one (arguably) poor season in a foreign land, to which he was shipped off at the last minute not knowing the language or the culture. I'll give him a pass on that. Every goalkeeper makes mistakes - see Hart's third replacement at City just last week. Name the better goalkeepers in the Premier League outside of Courtois, Lloris, De Gea and Cech. I don't think you'll have an exhaustive list and it'll be one I'll certainly be able to argue against - it's not like I'm claiming he's world class, just a very good goalkeeper. At a push I can only think of maybe Schmeichel or Heaton and only Kasper has been tested at the highest level.

On what he had produced the previous half decade at Manchester City (4 golden gloves by the age of 28 as silky has already pointed out), he is clearly at least an upper mid-table keeper, which makes sense because he's landed at a club with upper mid-table aspirations. He has a contract with City until 2019 and wouldn't be cheap to buy outright for clubs in that tier. He's on £110k+ per week at City, another reason that clubs haven't come in for him, as JJ pointed out.

Also, followed by an interesting discussion on his market value.

Last season Man City had to pay part of his wages for him to go to Torino, this season West Ham are covering his wages but no loan fee.

Next season? I reckon they will struggle to find any club to cover even half his wages, his market value is non existent. He's a liability rather than an asset (quite a fitting description).

Some players you might feel sorry for but it's clear from Harts treatment of Nastasic and Pirlo he is not deserving of any sympathy.

No way should Joe Hart be anywhere near number 1 and if we fetching 3 keepers to the world cup then he shouldn't even be in the squad either.

Slightly favour towards Pickford especially if we gonna be more braver with the ball and passing it out from the back.

Kyle Walker is miles better than Glenn Johnson ever was and i would say at this moment in time he's probably a top 3 right back in the world. You dont play every week for a team like City and a manager like Pep if he was world class or close to world class.

Pickford has more of a thing about him whereas Butland just seems like a number 2.

I can remember that being written. It doesn't mean that anyone was implying that Hart's was an excellent goalkeeper but a good custodian to have between the sticks for a club of West Ham's stature. Not a ridiculous claim really.

Kyle Walker is for me the best RB in the world. His mistake on Liverpool's opening goal was disappointing but I fail to see which player(s) is/are better than him. Do you have any?

He didn't look great defending in the second leg either.

Walker isn't a natural defender, nor is he particularly good going forward. He's not Lahm, he's not Alves. those mentioned above are better, but as are quite a few others. Valencia is a better player. Azpilicueta is a far better player, and started his career at right back.

Walker isn't good enough at that level, as with Hart, I'm sure this will come out in time.

I'd take Carvajal and Kimmich over Walker for sure. I'd also have Nick Pope in goal, but it's really kind of even between him and Pickford imo.
