I heard you're from the Eastern parts of our Fatherland. So,thank god for the Re-Unification then, Mente. The GDR would've won nothing, you were our Scotland in football ;)

Olympic games bitch

Which of the teams we've beat this tournament are better than that Iceland team, serious question? Probably Colombia. How far have we progressed then, did you watch our play from open play? We'll see next tournament should we qualify.
I did. We created plenty of chances from open play but Kane had a poor tournament. Lingard should have scored last night, Kane should’ve had 2. If we take our chances it’s a different story But we didn’t and we paid for it.

We’ve got the youngest squad at the whole tournament with a style and structure that suits them. Finally a manager that 99% of england fans love. It’s the best time to be an England fan in my lifetime and I’m gonna enjoy it.

yeah, maybe, but have a saying here in Germany, dont know something equal exists in english. literally translated it means: you make the biggest failures in success.

of course is to reach a semi a success, but "reached the semi final", shouldnt be written all over the english campaign this year. There is a lot of work to do.
Sure there is a hell of a lot of work to do - we all know here that the Semi's may have flattered us. But ultimately we beat the teams that beat the 'big teams' and we deserved to be in and go out of the semi-finals.

Imagine if the Germany now didn't reach a semi-final for the next 24 years. Then you lost in penalties to us. After that, imagine you don't get to the Semi finals for another 28 years. Imagine in all that time you came last in the group multiple times, failed to qualify for the Euros, lost to a team in the knockout stages that is 0.56% of your population, only win 5 knock out games since you won that world cup in 2014 etc (the list could go on). At that point you'd just be happy to have some pride back in the team.

Well we've done that.

Exactly this. It’s easy for the German to say you shouldn’t celebrate a semi-final as a success when it’s probably a minimum requirement for them. We’ve been utterly gash all my life, this is definitely a success in my eyes.

It's his opinion, and tbf I agree not sure how it's garbage. If Harry Kane put us 2 up last night a final would have been in sight, we might not have beaten France, but it's a one of game where anything can happen, penalties, red cards, injuries etc.

Next tournament we could get a group of death again and other teams probably will improve, the question is will we? Nobody can realistically say, but we've missed a big chance, make no mistake about it.

Personally I'm gutted to lose a semi final but good for those who just seem happy to have had a good run.
And it's my opinion that it won't.

England will win the World Cup again, I have no doubt.

Anything can change in a generation of players.

I agree we missed out on a great chance, but to say never get a better chance is ludicrous

I hope you are right, but a young team doesn't automatically translate to future success.

As for the enjoying it, you should as I did up until last night. But people aren't stupid just because they criticize a poor performance and a huge chance to reach a final. Regardless of what happened up to that game, it was a disappointment that game imo and a big chance lost.

You are probably taking him a bit to literal there mate, I doubt he meant in 100 years time. Obviously we'll have chances again but this was our best for 28 years, and there are no guarantees we will have another in the next 28. As you say in changes each generation, that works both ways, we could be out in the groups if we qualify.

The thing that's staggering me is people having ago at people who were critical of last night, some are gutted to be out and have every right to an opinion.

By virtue of not playing anyone is not a success. 2002 was a more successful tournament than this. Smashing the Argies is so much better than scraping a win over Colombia.

It was, but i'm confident in what the FA are doing to make sure this isn't/wasn't a one off. Look at the youth teams coming through - much many trophies did they win last summer?

I'm just as gutted as the rest of you - my gf is Croatian and somehow I had to hug her, say congrats and she stands there in disbelief that Croatia are in a world cup final - that was horrible.

I think people are free to slate last night, I have (see my post this morning).

But at the same time, whilst feeling devastated we went out, I feel positive that good things are on the horizon. This team has taught us to ignore history, we make our own history now - so let's do it

Oh 100% last night was disappointing and some of our big players didn’t turn up (Kane, Alli) but the tournament as a whole has been fantastic and I think we really do have a lot to be hopeful for in the future. Only time will tell I guess.

I hope people don't get carried away and put too much pressure on the team for the Euros, what helped this tournament was the lack of expectation, so every win felt special. The "Golden Generation were set up to fail with everyone expecting too much and waiting to knock them at every opportunity, lets not do the same with this team.

Probably cos I’ve been in the pub with all my mates getting pissed up on a Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Sunday etc. It’s been fucking brilliant.

I went to France two years ago for the Euros and went to the England vs Slovakia game. Anyone who remembers that game and the Iceland game after it and still doesn’t see how far we’ve progressed is either blind or stupid.

Exactly this, this team have given me some great moments in the pub with mates. Probably more so than all the other England teams put together.

Gutted obviously but immensely proud of the players, that lack of experience caught up in the end against a good side.

I think a lot of why we did so well was the team being full of confidence and baring no scars. I just hope this painful experience helps to motivate them more rather than scar them in the same way it has other England sides. If it does, we should challenge for the Euros in 2 years time with a few new additions, the likes of Sessengon (however you fucking spell it) to replace young, Gomez to replace Cahill etc the side can be even stronger.

The most depressing thing of all is that I now have to remember that Charlton fucking Athletic exist.

Just for the record: you mean the other German here on board.
This German (me) here is of the same opinion as you. You should see this semi-final (and a potential 3rd place) as a success, especially considering what you've reached in the last decades (that Gassy mentioned).

We can but beating Colombia & Sweden never has & never will constitute success and them just the facts.

I think it would be churlish for anyone to say that we shouldn't enjoy England's performance in this tournament. Just look at previous World Cup tournaments..

2014 - we played well against Italy but ultimately lost. Nothing to enjoy for us in that tournament.

2010 was just grim all round

2006 was not good viewing either, the Ecuador match was particularly painful.

2002 - The Argentina match was a definite high point.
So, I had to go back 16 years for a similarly enjoyable moment watching England at the World Cup finals.

England have to make the most of that U17 crop. I don't like him but Brendan Rodgers would be a far better bet for developing these young lads into realistic potential champs.

That's what I've been saying for ages. It's down to their agents and clubs to get them out on loan somewhere if they aren't going to be getting first team football at their parent clubs. It's not just the U17s either, we've got players that smashed it last summer across various levels up to pro.
