Ah yes, prime time on the opening Saturday is....Peru???

Still, fair play to them for making their first world cup in 36 years. Be a momentous occasion for them, even without talisman Paolo Guerrero. Yes, their joint top scorer from the qualifiers is out after failing a drugs test. They'll likely be relying on Jefferson Farfan and Edison Flores, who was their other top scorer in qualifiers.

Could they make some noise in this tournament? After France, that 2nd spot is wide open and they showed their talent in qualifying, drawing with Colombia and Argentina and beating Uruguay, all on home soil admittedly. How will they perform in Russia?

As for the Danes, they always seem to have a handful of good players and smashed the Irish in their play off game, so they should have the full support of the home nations! ;) Eriksen is obviously the main man for Denmark and he is coming off a superb season with Spurs. No doubt we'll have the usual Bendtner banter as well.

Hard to call this one. The Danes should win you'd imagine, but Peru are a wild card that could crumble away from their high altitude home stadium, or could flourish on their first major stage.

I thought I cleared this up when we were still on The Football Forum. Lima isn't in altitude.

Despite believing we are better than Denmark, we are still underdogs in this, which is a good thing as we thrive in those conditions.

Assuming no one gets injured, I think we will lineup like this

Gallese

Advincula - Rodriguez - Ramos - Trauco

Tapia - Yotun

Carrillo - Cueva - Flores

Farfan

There is discussion on who should start between Rodriguez or Santamaria, but Rodriguez injury prone as he is, is still easily our best defender and we're going to need his experience. Think Mario Yepes at the last World Cup for Colombia.

Trauco and Tapia will be key for this.

Alright, jeez, calm down. I must be getting mixed up with another country, I do apologise.

Hahaha I'm messing with you mate, I was hoping you'd see the sarcasm in my tone.

It was a common joke on here 3 years ago to say Lima was in altitude

You've got to use emoticons for that, goes over my head every time! ;)

Which country am I thinking of then? I'm sure there was one team that relies on that? Is it Bolivia?

I read that "Lord Bendtner" maybe misses the World Cup due to an injury?

Anyway, with or without him I hope that Peru will smash the Danes. Can't forgive them that they've beaten us with a pub team in the final of the Euro 92 :D
Nah, seriously, I don't have a grudge against our northern neighbours but I hope that Peru will beat them nonetheless.

Doesn't mean they haven't lost an advantage of playing high though, eh Lib? :shifty:

If Denmark win 6-1 Ireland are better than Peru.

Gotta root for Denmark here, Caroline Wozniaki (a fellow Red), Sidse Knudssen, Mads Mikkelsen, Lurpak and bacon; you gotta get behind that! Sorry Lib! :D

Is Cristian Benavente in the Peru squad?

He isn't, barely missed out, which I'm fine with. I think he has talent but he has been below average every single time he's played for us.

Fair enough, was a casualty of our promotion unfortunately, brought in to be a part of an U23 core but ended up being forced into the first team too early and suffered as a result, I hope he kicks on personally and carries on doing well

Only 3 days away from our return to the World Cup. I am bloody nervous.

I'm looking forward to seeing if new Seattle signing Ruidiaz is any good.

Is he terrible? Seattle are currently incapable for doing any damage in attack, and I'd like that to change.

He's good, but he doesn't fit into the style + Paolo Guerrero and Jefferson Farfan are better players. He's scored 30+ goals in Mexico the last 2 years, and he's carried the last 2 teams he's played for. There is just no room for him in the starting lineup. He'll only come on if we're really chasing a result.

That's the rumoured lineup for today. Odd not to see Paolo Guerrero but if he's not match fit enough then fair enough.

Probably appearing in a different line up today with his track record.
