Iceland will be buoyed by their great draw against Portugal. Didn't show all that much going forward, but defended stoutly and had the Portuguese mostly at arms length. They'll have to be a bit more adventurous in this one if they want to get out of the group.

Hungary on the other hand probably pulled off the biggest shock of the first round of games across the tournament, seeing off Austria with a comfy 2-0 win. They looked impressive at times and when your main striker breaks his 18 month goal drought to put you ahead, maybe things are falling your way.

A win for Hungary takes them through, a win for Iceland really does blow this group wide open.

Hello? How can people NOT be watching this game? What is it about Hungary v Iceland on a Saturday June afternoon that doesn't appeal to people?

Hungary should be infront and we saw a nice flop by Aaron Gunnarsson to win Iceland a penalty, which Sigurdsson scored. If Iceland can hold on and win, they will be pretty much through to the knockouts it seems. Incredible achievement for them if it happens, even given their weak group.

I would have loved a Gudjohnsen winner there.

Not sure why Iceland look so dejected, they still have good chance at finishing 3rd and qualifying that way.

Hard to say that Hungary didn't deserve something out of that, but got to feel for Iceland in the end. Hope they can pick themselves up for their last match and at least nab a 3rd place qualifying position

They do. Iceland are a bunch of shithouses, but they have a population of 331,000. According to Wikipedia, that's less people than countries like Luxembourg (570,000), Estonia (1,350,000), Lithuania (2,906,000), Moldova (3,564,000) and the mighty Transnistria (505,153). Only have a few thousand odd more people than the London Borough of Hackney, but with far more legitimate reasons to wear a beard.

Probably thinking the odds of shithousing their way to result for a third time in a row is unlikely.

I understand the limitations Iceland are working under, but the way they've approached the games at this tournament hasn't been great to watch. Teams like Albania have proven that you can limitations and still give games a good go. But the way they've shithoused both their draws has not been good. Shame really, because their fans look amazing. If Portugal can beat Austria tonight, I'd fancy Iceland to be able to grind out a 3rd draw tbh. They look incredibly hard to break down, which is one nice thing I can say about them.

I'd expect them to 'shithouse' a draw against Portugal but thought they would offer more against a side like Hungary. Unfortunately they didn't so I hope they open up a bit more in their final game as I think they will need a win to get through

Probably why Iceland have two more points and two more goals than Albania then.

Bit of a sickener for Iceland that but can't say Hungary didn't deserve it, cant sit and purely defend on a 1 goal lead it usually ends badly. That point for Hungary does put them in a really good position to make the last 16 now though, especially if Portugal and Austria is a draw. As for Iceland they'll probably need something against Austria but they've got to offer more than they did today.

And that is the saddest thing about football for me. Playing shit defensive football often bears more fruit than being open and expansive. Football would die on its arse if every team took the shithouse defensive approach to games.

Besides, Albania have had no luck at this tournament. Had a man sent off against Switzerland that was never a 2nd yellow, were unlucky not to get anything from that game. They also should have had a point against France and even hit the post at 0-0. Yes, Iceland have 2 points and Albania none. But on another day, it could easily be the other way round. I don't think your point necessarily proves that the defensive approach works better. This game is the classic example, they sat deep for the win and got caught. Had Hungary scored 5-10 minutes earlier, they probably would have won.

I could list Wales v England, Northern Ireland v Poland and Czech Republic v Spain as 3 example at this tournament alone when the all out defensive approach cost said teams. Be interesting to see which of Albania and Iceland make the last 16.

How was that not a yellow card? Blatant intentional handball with the aim of stopping a goalscoring opportunity.

No, but that Iceland's approach has proved to be better than Albania's.

I think Iceland have done well. Defend well and they look really dangerous on the break. I'm not sure what the fuss is about.

Feel bad for Iceland, would've been brilliant for their fans if they won it.
