He tried hard for us, just wasn't particularly good, certainly not Championship standard.

This describes most of our players when we were in PL and for most seasons until now. And currently, "not being good enough for the Championship" doesn't stop Birmingham signing them.

Do we think there’ll be many games affected by the snow this weekend, watching the news the general concensous seems to be the heaviest snow & coldest temperatures are still to come over Friday/Saturday...

Currently there’s less than an inch in Brum, more of a pain in the arse than a disruption but looking ahead to Nottingham on Saturday there seems a fair bit forecast, I’ve got match tickets but am holding off buying train tickets until a bit nearer the time.

Truth be told I hope it’s off, I’m out for the Missus birthday on the Friday night, restaurant-club-casino, last thing I really need is to be on the 9.19 from New Street... :bl::doh:

About a foot of snow in Derby this morning. Presumably Notts is the same.
It’s not going to melt before the weekend, so I guess it depends on if they can keep the roads clear and safe. The old bill will no doubt have the final say.

Don't mind wolves showing some ambition, or sticking their chest out a bit. All I'm saying is, know your place in the pecking order. We are still top dogs :smug:

Hope you do. Always like playing as Grimsby on football manager games for some reason, so it's like an adopted 2nd team for me.

Really...

It's funny, the 3 clubs mentioned (Leeds, Derby and Villa) have all spunked away as much money as Wolves if not more. It sounds more like sour grapes than anything. If all these Mendes players turned out shit I guarantee you that nobody would batter an eyelid about it.

Don't think it's down to money.

Seems like a random call but something must be up. Innocent until proven guilty of course.

Because a club at this level realistically wouldn't be able to sign Neves, Costa, Jota or Caveleiro so it doesn't add up.

Weren't you very close to signing Cavaleiro the season before us? Remember a lot of papers linking him with you.

I am surprised its taken teams so long to complain and you haven't been called all sorts in the media relating to ruining British football like we were when making use of our Udinese/Granada link up in 2012/13 (the season we loaned them all rather than buying them on permanent deals)

Don't worry - once you go up no-one will care as really you will just be the same as everyone else with loads of overseas players!

I just assumed Wolves were using the 'loan with a view to a permanent signing' very cleverly, I would be interested to see the figures though.
Isn't it just like PSG have done with MBappe on a smaller scale? Loan a player rather than sign them immediately to adhere to FFP?

I think it's more to cover ourselves to be honest. Most if not all of Mendes' players we have loaned are with a view to a permanent deal in our favour. Last year we had a player from Mendes called Joao Texiera, he wasn't very good so we canceled his loan in Jan, but initially he was one of these players we could have signed on a permanent basis of we liked him.

Because of the new(ish) rules of FFP, it takes into account the last 3 years of accounts. The year before Fosun we showed a decent profit margin, but this year and last we have obviously spent quite a bit. Theoretically even if we didn't go up this year, we could still spend quite a bit next year, but the year after that we'd likely recieve a huge fine (not that it stopped QPR).

Also the likelyhood is if we didn't go up we would be selling our big names. Neves would go for a huge sum of money, and I am sure Jota has a getout clause in his contract where he doesn't have to sign incase we don't go up.

We've announced a loss of £23m over the 2016/17 season. I don't think it will be as bad this season, but we will still be looking at roughly losing -£10m at a guess, which pushes over over the dreaded FFP line of losing £30m in 3 years (and that is only 2 years worth of accounts).

I predict if we don't go up, operation sell Ruben Neves will come into fruition.

I suspect the loss will rise again.

Would have thought you'd be at a bigger loss than that this season (surely it would be bigger than last year's) but either way you can easily sell a player or two to fund the difference.

Yeah we will definitely lose money this year too, mainly due to signing Neves for £15.7m. Last season we broke our transfer record twice, sacked 3 managers and did some work to Compton (training facility), which explains the huge £23 deficit.

We've sold a few players and trimmed the wage bill a little in the summer just gone, which eases the Neves deal a little, but I can still see us down by at least 10m overall. We're lucky that we have as many assets as we do, incase we are in danger of failing FFP, I can just see us selling most of them. Selling Neves alone would mean our accounts would skyrocket.

i agree with you but which is the problem?

If there is a project behind it involving Mendes it is normal for him to bring his assistants into the club

Would you really have been able to trim the wage bill? Assume Jota, Bonatini, Neves, Boly, Vinagre, etc are all on fairly hefty wages?

Not really, Neves is on 40k which is the only big one. The rest are under 20k a week. Vinagre is only on 2k a week according to sources on our forum.. he was initally only signed for our youth team.

Highly doubt Jota is under £20k per week having played for Porto and Atletico.

Regardless, all of that will still add up to £100k per week or more. Highly doubt you did enough “cost trimming” to be able to add that to your wage bill, spend £15m on Neves, whatever you spent on all the loan fees, and reduce your losses by £15m.

Sorry mate, but doesn’t add up at all.
