So if the appeal decision is still pending when the AGM happens on Saturday presumably the divisions are finalised with Gateshead in the National and Aldershot in the South, then if Gateshead are unsuccessful they have to seek a place at Northern League level or below and the National Division runs with 23 clubs?

That’s what I’m thinking, yes. And I expect the Gateshead appeal to be unsuccessful too.

Is there anything to stop the NL from ignoring the appeal for now and just reprieving Aldershot and Truro?

If they do that and the FA upholds Gateshead's appeal that leaves them with 25 clubs in the National Division and 22 each in the North and South. I think something similar happened when the reformed Chester club got itself shoehorned into the NPL as an additional club around ten years ago after the fixtures had been released. All the fixtures had to be redrawn and every Saturday someone was left without a game in a division with 23 clubs.

I think the National League can still move clubs between its own divisions after the AGM in which case Aldershot might get a reprieve, but Truro wouldn't and the South Division would be left a club short. Which would be an absurdity in itself when it was left oversubscribed at the end of the season with Gloucester and Oxford getting switched to the North. Or they could move Oxford back to the South and leave the North a club short? The possibilities are endless!

National League AGM tomorrow - hopefully a decision is made so that all clubs can prepare for next season.

Not bothered which way it goes, it just needs to be sorted now!

Gateshead really got off lucky here.

Every other team who has been demoted/kicked out the Conference has dropped a lot more than just 1 league.

I'm absolutely convinced if anyone other than Truro were due to be reprieved, Gateshead would be a step 3 club now.

I think he's formally relinquished control now but the recent Truro owner was a thoroughly dodgy character who treated everyone with contempt. I feel for the club's loyal supporters but they tested the patience of far too many people one way and another last season.

As someone who doesn't really follow the Conference South, what did Truro do?

Gateshead budget for next season is 375k and they're staying full time. How do they expect to have a budget as "lavish" as that on crowds of 700, where is the money coming from.

Are the new owners bankrolling them?

Basically they rose from the depths of the pyramid much like Fleetwood and Fylde, but without spending on infrastructure along the way. Then pie in the sky plans for a new ground failed to materialise as the chairman repeatedly stalled and changed his plans on a whim, ending with the decision to relocate 85 miles east to Torquay on the eve of last season after supporters of their early opponents had already booked travel and accommodation for games at Truro. (Direct train journey times from London to Truro are about the same as London to Edinburgh.) Then he decided to move them back again halfway through the season, but only after coining it in from a bumper gate for playing at home to Torquay in Torquay.

My own club's visit in November clashed with Torquay being drawn at home in the FA Cup. Truro initially refused to play us on the Sunday as they wanted to delay it until their own ground was ready, which would have meant travelling to Cornwall in midweek. We had to refer the matter to the League, who ordered the game to be played on the Sunday, but the time wasted over confirming the date meant a lot of our supporters missed out on cheaper train tickets. The guy acts like Donald Trump, ignoring rules he doesn't like and throwing his toys out of the pram when he can't get his own way.

Pete Masters has gone now from Truro. Truro City are now owned by the same person who owns the Cornish Pirates

Good riddance. I just hope the club isn't left without a ground at the end of this redevelopment saga.

They'll struggle in the NLN on that sort of budget won't they? Especially FT - it's not doable on that budget surely?

Stalybridge were "full-time" when we were in this league, and about half the team was Manchester uni students and college kids - not sure if they trained in the evenings. Anyway, the budget will have been similar, and they were eventually relegated.

Most clubs budgets will be less than that, ours is. Most clubs of course are part time.

If they were part time with that sort of budget then they'd be very competitive, but hard to see how they can operate a full time squad on such a low number.

But my point is, I can't see how they can generate 375k in any case. Unless someone is putting money in (again), then I can see them hitting the skids.

They'll be down to 400 next season.

Players at "full time" clubs don't necessarily have no other income outside playing for that club. A lot of "part time" clubs include daytime training sessions in their schedule. The big difference is full time clubs pay their players all year round whereas contracts at part time clubs only cover a 40-42 week playing season. Lots of players at part time clubs have flexible or part time freelance type jobs outside football, they can probably still combine the two in many cases at a full time club. It's not uncommon for players to start their own small businesses where they can employ others to cover for the for football commitments. It's not like the old fashioned distinction between full time players spending their afternoons on the golf course (or in a pub) while part timers do 9-5 jobs in offices or in factories and on building sites. Obviously some low budget full time clubs may rely heavily on younger unproven players combining their football with some sort of further education, but t doesn't mea they can't accommodate a few experienced old heads too.

As for the sums adding up, you could look at half the clubs in the league and compare their average attendance to their apparent spending on playing squad and wonder where all the money comes from. After what happened under the recently departed regime I'm pretty certain the new owners will have been closely scrutinized and won't have been given the benefit of the doubt if there were any flaws in their business plan. I'm sure there will be other clubs sailing closer to the wind than Gateshead over the next 12 months.

When my club Dulwich were newly promoted to this league last year, at a time when we had off field issues with the ground and finances, our officials were thoroughly grilled about all aspects of the club. At one time I believe there was a real danger of not being allowed in and we were only given a conditional licence to commence last season, since upgraded to a full licence.

My impression is that basket case clubs get cut plenty of slack when problems arose during the season because everyone wants them to fulfil their fixtures, but as soon as the season ends you'll be shown no leniency and kicked out to be some other league's problem at a lower level if you survive at all. I reckon it would have been fairly easy to throw Gateshead out after suspending them last month although, as some have pointed out, the fact that Truro would have been the beneficiaries after causing problems of their own for the league and other clubs might have helped them.
