True, I am just enjoying the ride and trying not to overthink it too much as it reaches its conclusion. I admit the quality of writing hasn't been as high which is a bit frustrating after they've had two years to work on it. Perhaps they spent too much time filming and not enough writing. I can forgive it though, I don't recall any television series of eight seasons, even the best ones, that were flawless.

The plot holes are annoying and when they accumulate they do take me out of the story a bit, but imo the real problems are that the writers don’t really understand who the characters are anymore. It certainly explains why, for example, Jon and Dany don’t have any chemistry (aside from the fact that Emilia Clarke and Kit Harrington obviously don’t), Tyrion has turned into such a credulous idiot and Arya regularly switches from doe-eyed schoolgirl to unhinged loon on a whim.

Also the pacing has been all over the place. Two episodes of build up to the white walker fight — fine, and I actually thought those two episodes were fairly strong — but then Sunday night’s episode tried to fit about three or four episodes of content into 80 minutes and almost nothing registered.

Jon sending Ghost off to live with Tormund without so much as a pat on the head because the CGI is annoying to get right.

Good grief.

I can't understand why a CGI wolf is that difficult to animate in the first place.

Just use a big dog. We haven't seen Ghost in so long that any big white dog would've done.

Well that's the thing, it's not even a CGI wolf I don't think. It's a real wolf that they blow up and composite into the show. I don't understand all the issues they're having with it now when earlier on in the series they used him all the time, even in the background of scenes that he didn't need to be in.

interesting fan theory about the dragons

with Drogon disappearing for most of season 5, people are speculating that Dragons can give birth to young without fertilization, and that is exactly what he/she was doing. which means that there may be some additional back up for the army in this weeks episode

dragon ex machina might be a bit much, even for these writers

Arya is a faceless person isn't she? So that's how she got in past the white walkers, still pretty daft.

Also why is greyworm so upset about miss Sunday, he has no dick was never gonna keep her happy.

Erm....well, not sure what to make of that. I understand if you think this was a poor episode, I do get that.

I can understand the motivations though, they were there from when they were still drawing from the source material. Dany has always had the "Mad Queen" arc written in, whether thats what GRRM intended for the conclusion, who knows. She burned that witch doctor in S1 for killing Drogo, burned the Tarly's, strung up over 100 people in Mereen, killed the Khals.

I'm just very disappointed that she was written as trying to be this very progressive forward thinking alternative, a strong feminine role model, and then the writers just fell back on the tried and tested 'Nah, she's mental' angle. Wouldn't it have been a nice idea if she rose above that and instead proved to be a just ruler? Oh well.

Very disappointing in Jamie, yes I know he's always had a serious hard on for his sister, but this is a man that at the end of S7 was rilling to risk death at her hands to do the right thing. Yet now, he wants to be here, dying is such a shit way. Weak death for both of these 2 major characters, what a waste.

Clegane bowl was good, as brutal as we expected. Too much of the episode was destruction though, half of it was Arya and Jon running round trying to avoid being crushed. I mean, yes, we should get a sense of the brutal destruction Dany is bringing down on the people, but there was way too much. You can show this without Arya being right in the middle of it.

Euron, pointless character. The Golden Company, waste of a potentially interesting plot thread. Why even bring them in if you are just going to wipe them out straight away?

Watched a leak video earlier in the week and it mostly got the run down of this episode spot on. But, if it does correctly predict the finale, then man it will be a horrifically poor ending.

It does feel each week like the writers gave up writing solid and interesting plots and character development for a few cool shots and some fancy cinematography. Oh well, let's see what next week has in store.

This series being so bad is simply down to the fact that the showrunners are trying to rush it so they can move on to Star Wars. They know the ending, and have gone from point A to point D without any thought going in as to how to get all the characters there. Visually it’s excellent, everything else is severely lacklustre

Best episode of the season. I’m past caring about any character development at this stage.

What a load of rubbish.

7 bloody series we've sat through this only to be served up with 5 (most likely 6 episodes) of rushed, pretty tripe. The writers deserve every single bit of stick coming their way.

I thought it was alright! I’m glad that they put the kybosh on the Dany/Breaking the Wheel Fantasy — as if it wasn’t apparent that the Feudal Queen had any other plans but Divine Rule.

I also liked infinite ammo Drogon, as unfeasible as cheat codes are in the GOT universe.

I think the Daenerys stuff is the least objectionable part of the story, she has never been benevolent when pushed, but why are Tyrion and Varys naive and of low cunning now? On what planet would Arya abandon her revenge at the last minute after an off hand heart to heart with the Hound? And don't get me started on the Jaime redemption arc that the writers wiped their arse with. Imagine the stories they could have developed if they hadn't blown fuck knows how much of the budget on Drogon burning extras. I think compared to the potential this season had, it's been a massive let-down so far. The cinematography and some of the performances have been excellent, but the script-writing has never been worse.

I'll be binge-watching the season's again at some stage when i can find the time, been a roller-coaster of a ride with many emotional highs and lows, as we've seen in the final season.

Emmy award winning director David Nutter has done some great work helming three of the final six episodes of the entire series. I think personally the last season was never gonna live up to the expectations of the other seasons of GOT! Completed too hurriedly.

I read a while ago that the writers made all the actors sit together & read the final episode together out loud. When it ended, they all turned and said "Wow, it's really the perfect ending".

This has been on my mind the entire time & I think it's pretty obvious what's going to happen. I hope there is still some shock left in this series, but I don't really see where. There isn't anyone left to shock me tbh.

Awful season, awful writing, awful character development. Tbh, even the acting hasn't been as believable as it usually is, maybe this is because of the character though.

I signed the petition to have the final season rewritten, although it's incredibly unlikely but f*cking hell - this has been awful. 727,000 signatures so far

Just finished season 1. It’s basically a long version of Willow with Machiavellian scheming, gratuitous violence, and tits. So I’m happy enough.

Just a question for those who aren’t, like me, a decade behind the times: Does the decline in writing quality that everyone’s moaning about coincide with the TV show going beyond the Martin novels, or is just a season 8 thing?

I thought the decline in quality started in season 7, but it was much more slight.

The decline in writing starts in season 5 as the plots begin to move away from the books, but it’s really evident from season 7 as that’s when things that happen stop making sense, not just bad dialogue.

So I've just got a colleague into GoT and he's halfway through season 1.

Then this pr*ck Brazilian says "Man I was sorry about Cersei & what the mad queen did to her"

The entire office is in outrage for those who haven't seen it yet. He's just watching house of cards to they ruined the ending for him there as some revenge.

I believe now they're planning to watch the last episode live at spoil it for him at work on Monday

There is a noticeable gap in quality between storylines that are adapted from the books and storylines that aren't. The show devolves into little more than an action adventure once the showrunners no longer have the direct source material to rely on. There are some attempts to recreate GRRM's brand of mystery and political intrigue but it mostly leaves you scratching your and not in a good way. Still, I would definitely recommend it. There isn't that much better genre TV around nowadays, even at it's worst.

^ Oh, I’ll keep watching until I tire of it. I only asked because the whole ‘TV show outpacing the author of the source material’ thing really interests me (if there’s a precedent for that, I don’t know it) and I was curious to know whether there’s any correlation between that and declining standards of quality.

Cheers for the replies, chaps.
