Anyone ever think we picked the wrong horse in the great Sunni/Shia schism? The irony of us consistently blaming Iran for terrorism when they are Shia, and, last I checked, Al Qaeda and Daesh Sunni, is extraordinary.

Iran is going to last a lot longer than Saudi Arabia, it has a young, educated population and at least the trappings of a democracy as well as far more economic diversification. I just don't get this trade. I was talking to a strategic big wig who explained that flipping sides would doom us to an endless array of Saudi jihadist attacks, but that's kinda what we got ain't it?

Foreign political affairs do not have the capacity to be arsed about having their own thread or not. For that reason I like this thread title.

I'm not sure if it deserves its own thread, btw tomorrow there are parliamentary elections in my country. It's highly probable that Five Star Movement will be the most voted party, but it won't have the numbers to make a party government, so we'll see a few days of febrile negotiations and then a coalition government. The big question is who will be part of this coalition.

Didn't their leader say he will not go into a coalition with any other party? If so they've ruled themselves out of being able to change anything which is a strange position to take.

As predicted, Five Star Movement was the most voted party but it hasn't reached the 40% of the votes which was necessary to govern alone. Great defeat for the centre-left, defeat also for Berlusconi whose party was expected to be the most voted in the centre-right coalition, instead it was overtaken by the North League. Now, in order to form a coalition government, italian politicians must carry out their favorite activity: making compromises. Some media are talking about a possible "populist government" led by a coalition between Five Star Movement and North League, frankly I think that's impossible.

Hope so.

This coup only came about because they recognised that he had a clear path to winning a general election. Stop forming opinion from headlines and look at the country and even the world as a whole. People are looking for new directions and the establishment is flailing, all over the world it's resulting in previous irrelevant parties or movements coming to the fore. Whether that be the right wing national front in France, Party for Freedom in Holland or the very exciting Five Star Movement in Italy, all are on the verge of achieving something historic, all are also anti-EU. Further afield the Liberal Party came from nowhere to win Canada, using basically all the policies Corbyn calls for. Then we have Trump, the ultimate protest vote. The establishment is toppling.
