Drums at Football Grounds

I'm looking to get a smallish one sometime soon for the next season. Attempt to boost our atmosphere even further.

We had one that was recently banned after someone threw the drumstick on the pitch. Glad it's gone to be honest. It was always out of time with the chants and they used to use it to try and use it to put off the goalkeeper at goal kicks by beating it once just before the keeper reached the ball, but was always late so ended up hitting it after the ball was on it's way up field.

Don't mind drums as long as the player has some idea what they're doing.

No worse than people who can't sing/chant at the right pace really.

Drums at Football, especially at non-league level are both inexcusable and ridiculous.

I'm proud my club has banned them, and that they've been banned for more than a decade. It's funny to watch the reactions both in person and online of those told on the day at the gate they can't bring in a drum

Done right for me is that it should be used to join existing songs rather than beating a "tune" trying to start them, be kept in time, and not continue after the song has died down. Oh and a quieter drum is better as most taken to games are too loud for their purpose.

Drums when done right can add to the atmosphere, we have two drummers, one who is a kid with absolutely no rhythm who just goes thump, thump, thump no matter what the song.
But when Elvis turns up with his snare drum he starts the chants, keeps great time and most importantly, when the song is going he quietens down and just keeps the beat ticking over.

So, IMHO, done right im all for them. If you can't play it though, fuck off.

I think ours fills all these vital criteria, apart from being one big mofo that makes a bit of noise. Luckily the kids gathered around are usually equal to the volume, though. Nuneaton once had one that sounded like a readymeal being pierced open.

We've had a few drummers in the past who had zero sense of rhythm, and would wallop the toms in frustration and when no-one else was bothered. Seems to be the going rate to have the thickest kid in the entire ground in charge of the drum. We've also had a tradition of chants starting in the South Stand, then someone beating arrhythmically on the mesh fence halfway into it, ruining it for everyone. Maybe I should bring back the accordion...

Always remember Aldershot fans when they came to Plainmoor in 08 for the top two clash (sods went and won the league in the last minute..) but they had 2 or 3 drums and all worked well and it was superb.

We don't use a drum so I have nothing really to add to this.

But some Cheltenham fans used to call Aldershots ground the mini selhurst park because of the atmosphere and whoever plays the drum there is fantastic at it.

Purposely don't sit the side of the stand where our drum is. It's over-used and doesn't really add much to the atmosphere.

The Arena was taken over by Darlington Mowden Park Rugby Club and they won't share the ground with us. We are moving to Blackwell Meadows and intend to improve the facilities all round. Far as I know, the football club will take the main pitch with the rugby club taking the adjourning pitch.

Anything in town is better than playing out of the town.

Our drummer is not the worst, though I agree with the chap who says the drummer should only drum to chants started by others and not start the chants. Our drummer also has the immensely frustrating knack of starting that 'der-der x4 der-der-der x2 der-der-der-der x2 der-der-der Grimsby' chant (as I like to call it ) within a couple of seconds of the ball hitting the back of the net. Pisses me right off- just let the fans celebrate the goal for a bit FFS.

I don't like them. We had one a few years ago make an appearance and it actually quite helped at home, The drummer was decent but he turned 17/18 and wanted to go out and drink before the game so he passed it on to some idiot that was shit. Thankfully it is no more.
