With Planet Earth 2 back on our screens, I've gotten back in to a few documentary series. I was wondering if anyone had any that they'd recommend or what are your favourites.

Mine are The World at War as I'm a history nerd and Lawrence Olivier's narration is harrowing and Making a Murderer as it was just simply compelling viewing.

Discuss.

Secrets of a Police Marksman on C4 was excellent as a standalone documentary a couple of months back. 'The Murder of Sadie Hartley' on ITV1 was also compelling around the same time.

Would recommend both, but especially the latter.

Gold Rush - I actually hate Todd Hoffman, he is thick. Love Parker, he has a sensible head on his shoulders.

Loving this series of gold rush too Andy. Sad start with the death of his grandad but Parker is doing well. He still needs to work on his people skills but for his age hes nailing it. Best crew to watch.

Lol at the Todd comment. He is thick and i'd never work for him. Cant knock the amount of yards they run through their plant though but his prospecting is always dire. Dave Turin carries him!

The construction and running of the dredge is good because its different. But Tony Beets and his mercenary wife properly wind me up. They would backstab their only family for an extra dollar those 2!

Always been a top series but one episode a week at the moment is killing me.

Digging For Britain.
This episode was in Scotland and Northern England. I learned quite a few things watching this (When i wasn't drooling over DR Alice Roberts) for example i didn't know Roman slingers drilled a hole partially through stones so when they used them against an enemy they make a screaming sound, ancient shock and awe with hundreds of slingers firing at the enemy at once. Look forward to next week.

Roman's were proper bastards, their "spears" were designed to bend and break after impact so they were hard to pull out and utterly useless to throw back.

I know little to nowt about what you speak but I would say that the Romans designed their weapons to not facilitate the opposition's position & rightly so....bastards or not.

My favourite tactic was when they were besieging the Jews and just built a massive mountain as a ramp to get up to their settlement.

That's what you call innovation.

Frontline Fighting: Brits battling ISIS.
The tale of 3 Englishmen fighting with the Kurds to defeat Daesh. One was an ex IT worker.a currency trader and an ex soldier fighting together with volunteers from across the world including Germans and Americans. A real eyeopener for me as i hadn't realised so many people fought for free just food, they also had a bounty of $150,000 on their heads, i was surprised at the amount of women were fighting on the frontline as well.

I have been rewatching, in my opinion, the greatest documentary series in history.

World at War. Nothing holds up to the test of time at this, it is pretty much perfect.

Agree there mate and the narration was perfectly done. The opening credits with burning pics of people were incredible for the time.

After Brexit: The Battle For Europe.
Watched this on BBC2 last night about the rise of anti EU parties across Europe. I was quite surprised with the support these parties have in countries including Hungary,Italy,Germany,France and Holland and i really enjoyed seeing EU leaders squirming in interviews as even some of them were worried if another country votes to leave The EU could collapse. The leader of The Five Star Party in Italy was as mad as a box of frogs but vert entertaining to listen to.

SAS: Rogue Warriors.
A 3 part documentary on BBC2 about how the SAS was formed in 1941.The interviews from 1987 of those who survived WWII were poignant as none of them are still alive unfortunately, those men were true heroes doing things i could never do. My only complaint about this was the narrator Ben Macintyre who thought he was more important than what the brave men went through as he was far too smug for my liking.

Brilliant documentary about a group of quite remarkable individuals recounting their time in the SAS during WW2, don't know about you, mowgli. but I couldn't have calmly stayed in the restaurant when mad Paddy placed the grenade on the table and pulled the pin.

A guid dram
I watched the last half hour of that episode last night. Excellent stuff and hearing the no nonsense interviews was fascinating. There has to be a special type of person who could do stuff like that. Looking at that Paddy guy, he had the look of someone who wouldn't hesitate to snap your neck without a second notice, and that tale at the end where he drove through a barrage of bullets twice to rescue his men was extraordinary.

I also saw that one of the squads going on their missions was called 1 S.A.S, how cool would it be to say you were a member of that.

1066: A Year To Conquer England.
Narrated by Dan Snow an doc/drama that started off well with the build up to Hastings then went downhill with 3 historians arguing the case for each of the 3 men vying to be king, this part was in a studio while wearing modern clothes surely they could have dressed the part. There are another 2 episodes so i'll watch them on i player and skip the crap bits.

Wild Ireland: The Edge Of The World.
A beautiful doc that started at Skellig Rocks. The Narration by Colin Stafford-Johnson was spot on not taking over what we were seeing unlike when actors do it they ruin it imo. Watching whales, puffins (funny feckers ),seals, stags rutting and kinsects i'd never heard of was an hour of superb tv,looking forward to the final part next Friday.

Bring Me Back To Life.
Channel 4 for a change show a documentary well worth watching, this one tells of the journey a 22 year old father of one Taylor Britton who broke his neck in a car crash as doctors battle to save him at Southampton hospital, hard to watch at times seeing a fit young man in so much pain and the doctors and nurses show how much we should value them as they were fantastic with him and his family.
