When the money came in. I can't afford Prem football really so I thought this was a good project and yeah yeah before you start I'm a United fan (now just on telly) but needed a fix and to be fair, good ticket deals for me and the twins to get there. Thoroughly enjoy going. Yes we have a lot of money but the football is entertaining so we didn't stop going.

Lol.

But at least a Salford fan turned up at last

For the umpteenth time - many of us would say no to that. I would hate my club to become a Salford.

Apart from the fact that farcical games of "Our Billionaire is Bigger Than Your Billionaire" and the footballing equivalent of buying your doctoral thesis off the internet repel me, I value fan-ownership too much. Wimbledon fans actually voted down a takeover by a wealthy man, so don't tar us all with the Salford brush.

What would you do if a billionaire came in and did takeover at Exeter, would you stop supporting or go along for the ride?

Isn't one of the stands at Gigg Lane called the Neville Neville stand?

Yes, big Nev will always be a legend at Bury along with Jill. Their sons have never seemed to have any interest in us and its never really bothered me tbh. Salford are now our closest league team. Will be interesting if we play them and how many they would actually bring.

.

I'd certainly give up my season ticket and wouldn't continue to travel 200 miles to every home game. Whether I would go at all would depend on the exact situation. If it was a Salford Franchise Trojan Horse Into The Premier League thing I'd completely stop going, like the Salford fans who quit and for the same reasons - i.e. because the club I know and love would be dead.

I've been to Corinthian Casuals sometimes, who have exactly the ethos and atmosphere a football club should have IMO, so I'd probably get a season ticket there, or maybe try Clapton who seem to have a good thing going with a smilar ethos. Casual's vocal hardcore actually contains a number of Chelsea and Palace fans who quit going in disgust at the alienating, soulless circus the EPL has become - as one of them said on the excellent BT Sport documentary, "The Premier League is just a TV show these days".

Imagine choosing to support a club because you think it's a "good project". Sorry, I just don't get it.

It's Salford, innit?

Pretty sure Salford City are the Brexit Party to F.C. United's UKIP.

It’s just a shame for the real fans of Salford City who have watched their local team for years, only to have its heart and soul ripped out by a few ex pros. The sad thing is, a lot of United fans (Salfordian included) will jump on the bandwagon when in reality they don’t give a toss.

If the club was owned by a random Arab bloke there would be nobody jumping on the bandwagon. It’s sad. I bet the real fans in the National League are happy to see the back of them.

I hope all of our real football teams, with our real football fans, who have been there since day one (Exeter included!), smash them. Can’t wait for them to get bored and Salford drop like a stone. Here’s hoping.

Gretna are the side who always come to mind. Their owner Brookes Mileson paid for them to get to the SPL and Scottish cup final. Sadly he then popped his clogs and the club pretty much folded overnight. And judging by the fact they've managed to drum up enough interest in the town to form a phoenix club, Gretna actually had more genuine fans than Salford.

I went to that final (had a season ticket at Hearts that season). Gretna were a penalty kick away from winning that. They weren't much liked at the time but you have to feel a little sorry for them and their fans given what happened to Brookes.

Greed and money, as in many walks of life, is slowly destroying the enjoyment of the beautiful game. With all of this foreign investment, wealthy owners etc means that the vast majority of clubs just aren't playing on a level playing field. It has been discussed to death, but from the morally corrupt goings on at Manchester City down to clubs like Billericay and Salford having huge amounts of cash to aid them up the footballing pyramid.

Some of that, from fans that don't have owners that have never ending pockets of cash, is jealousy I guess. We all want a bit of success, that's kind of the point of the football club, amass points, go up the pyramid, win some stuff. That said, it does leave a nasty taste in the mouth that these clubs can do it.

At Swindon, we are being run but a chairman, that doesn't have stacks of money and so is running us as close to break even as possible. This means that at the moment, we are flitting around mid-table in league 2 and going out of cups early. Some of our fans hate this, and demand Power leave, presumably so someone with pots of cash can come in and we can buy our way up the league.

Its frustrating, but as long as Salford don't break any FPP rules there isn't much we can do about it. Football huh!

Gretna weren't much liked but had the mitigating factor that at the time nobody knew whether or not you could go all the way with money, whereas in Salford's case it just seems inevitable.

Why not Bury or Oldham?

Ha! I did football studies at uni so some of my opinions won't be popular!
Was there nothing of use to society that you could have chosen?
I had no idea that you could chose "football studies" as an option at university!
Good luck for the season, you'll need it on here!

It's half owned by a Singapore billionaire, the classless of 92 own the rest.
Apologies if you already knew that.

I’m actually feeling quite fed up with football now, I’ve been getting more and more irritated with the financial side of football over the last 15 years or so (including our reliance on the Man U money and then squandering it) but it’s always felt limited in the lower leagues to a Fleetwood, Crawley or FGR type club. One like Salford blowing everyone out the water just makes me want to give up to be honest.

I’m struggling to see a positive future for lower league football now, it looks like it’s going the same way as the EPL with absurd levels of money dictating the outcomes. Seems that the Championship is becoming the only “good” league in this country now which is such a shame.

The Championship has already been corrupted beyond belief. It is EPL2 in all but name. In the 80s and 90s it was relatively easy for clubs like Oldham, Swindon, Vale and ourselves to survive at that level. Now it is all but impossible, as the struggles of Rotherham, Peterborough and co. at that level demonstrate, despite heavy investment. League One is a glass ceiling for most small clubs now, and that ceiling will probably be lowered further in the next few years.

Yeah I know what you mean. I've been watching Swindon since 1989 and I'm going to be 40 this year so more or less 30 years watching football.

I don't want to be accused of being a mardy old git who constantly witters on about how football was 'more enjoyable in my day' but the more time passes, the less passionately I feel about the game. I used to watch every possible game going when Sky Sports was in its infancy, but TV and the money from Sky Sports/BT has really saturated things.

I'll still go to the matches, nothing can quite beat the smell of onions outside the ground, the buzz of the fans in the pub before the games, the last minute winners etc but I do fear the future (But I am naturally pessimistic anyhow!!)

His ownership was referred to the FA, but it was agreed that he didn't have operational control of Salford so there was no conflict - or something like that.

I do agree with you but what I would say is it is rare you get a side “blowing others out of the water” to the degree Man City or Salford do - you’ll argue Wolves last season and you’re probably right but it didn’t feel quite so extreme as this.

The Championship “feels” more unpredictable and the sides in it can actually compete or are relatively even. It is practically a closed league though, you’re right on that. I guess Portsmouth, Sunderland and Charlton might be ok on their crowds and Luton would be fine in their new stadium but it’s unatainable for the rest of us without a Bournemouth-type owner.

It’s sad state of affairs.

I'm from Salford not Bury or Oldham

So why did you support ManU beforehand then, if you're not from Trafford?

In any case, isn't Moor Lane in one of those odd places that is within Salford City Council, but it's not really Salford since it's on the wrong side of the Irwell?

Seem to remember Cambridge had a decent spell at that level under Beck (well remember is the wrong word, remember being told is more accurate), while the longest spell we've ever had in the same division was still our spell in the old D2 (broken only by a single season in the old D1). Can't see that happening again.

My family are United fans, that's how most get their team

Maybe my kids will in later life tell their peers they're Salford cos their dad took em to games. If they support United that's fine by me.

That's how clubs grow, it's all cycles.
