A good signing for Port, but given he's been linked with NL sides, a bit surprised he's decided to drop a level.
Comfort move. Southport are chucking dosh at it so extra money, close to home and he goes back and works with McCarthy again.

Ryan’s a good lad, if he was fit he’d be in the league, but I just don’t see that he’ll change in that regard. Especially under that fraud McCarthy who is responsible for him getting more unfit in the first place.

They aren't paying a transfer fee for this player - just a bumper signing on fee and extortionate wages. And it's unfair to say who this is on my source, because I was told in confidence. My point was less about the player in question (some will have heard of him, some probably not, as with any other non-league player), but more about the money I think Salford might be about to throw around. If they're paying this for this player, then MasterD is right and their budget might be around the £2mn/£3mn mark.
Which is crazy, because you don't need a £2m-£3m budget to get out of the league. That kinda budget is a top end L2 one.

If you're not careful, you end up spending as you want in the NL, and when the 55% wage cap comes in upon promotion to the FL, you're in a very sticky situation.

Is the Whitehead deal confirmed? He was the player I wanted us to keep the most. He could easily have made the step up to the league.

Outrageous money being spent on wages by Salford if true.

Our owners have thrown money at our squad - Paid around £100k for James Brophy alledgedly (I don't think it was that much) and around £50k for Bonne from Colchester, but the most we'd pay any of our players is around £1700pw at the absolute most. I can't see the likes of Tranmere, Chesterfield, Barnet or Hartlepool going above that either.

What these players signing for big wages at Salford don’t realise though, is that written into their contracts in small print is that for them to earn that money Ryan Giggs gets to shag their wives once a week.

That is wildly off. It was closer to a nominal fee than six figures.

It's larger than top end L2. Four years ago we were paying (I think IIRC) £1.7m p/a which was pretty much League One median (although obviously will have increased since, no way is it pushing £3m.)

The wage cap is kinda useless. All Gary Neville needs to do is pay £1m for his seat in the stadium and that's that.

Depends what you include in your "footballing" budget but our total "footballing" spend last year was £3.3 million and the Finance Director says that it was approx 25% on coaches and back up staff, 75% on players. The budget figure is likely to be £3million for the coming season.

https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/sport/cambridge-united-annual-shareholders-meeting-14597511

"......The club’s football spend at the start of the season was £3.3 million and a mixture of variable, football and non-football revenues - such as gate receipts and corporate hospitality - were supposed to balance the figure but ultimately fell short, and four reasons were given for this.

The first was that the additional revenue produced from the Leeds United game was reinvested in the club – with the additions of three players in January – in hopes of a play-off push and higher attendances, neither of which materialised to offset the outgoings.

Other football members of staff were also bought to the club in goalkeeper coach Kevin Pilkington and former assistant Mike Halsall in the aftermath of the cup match.

Other, unexpected, player recruitment was also needed at the start of the season, with Uche Ikpeazu and Brad Halliday joining towards the end of the summer window after a winless start to the season, which effected the profit margins......"

The football side of the business in 2016/17 ran at a loss of around £100k but losses elsewhere brought the total deficit to nearer £600k. Sales of Luke Berry and Will Norris will still leave a small loss across the wider business (a surplus on the footballing side) in the year to June 2018 and we're budgeting for a loss in 2018/19, with a footballing spend of around £3 million..........IF YOU CAN BELIEVE A WORD OUR DIRECTORS SAY.

A surprise to allow one of your best players to leave by mutual consent when you've got a summer to get a fee for him?

Gutted. That’ll leave a big void in our side. Chesterfield would be my guess.
Askey admitted we tried to bring him back last summer so will be interesting to see if he thinks he's good enough for L2. May depend on whether Callum Evans re-signs with us. Though we will need a bigger squad anyway so reckon Askey will defo be interested.

he is a class act. the tolls of working/living away from home has taken its toll, he is getting married this summer and wants to start a family. cant argue more than that.

with regards to keeping hold of him, we would have been lucky to get more than £10-20k for him. having him in contract at maybe £1k a week (for arguments sake) means we would not gain much by having him still on our books if we sold him on

Nice to see Max get a National League club, as he came through our youth system. Hopefully this means that the Pritchard to Aldershot rumours are true.

Sam Barratt is gone so not necessarily. You'll do very well to get Pritchard and I'm amazed no FL clubs are in for him. He's certainly more ready for L1 than Barratt.

Pritchard isn't under contract is he? I agree that we would do very well to get him. I must say I'm surprised that Barratt's got the Southend move, as I don't recall hearing too much about him throughout the year.

Yeah, had the pleasure of watching him lollop around doing nowt for a season and a half. Presumably he's no fitter, but his passing was poor and apart from a goal on his debut, I don't remember him getting anywhere near the box. Saw out his days playing the McNulty role, but hasn't got the positional awareness for that.

U's Legend (see my avatar). Scored at Wembley. Played in just about every position for us, including keeper. Personal life went off the rails and has been up and down the country since.

Glad he's playing for a proper team with a proper manager at last.

If he's getting his life together and gets fit this summer, you might have a gem. If not, god knows.

Fair enough, thanks for the assessment both!

Seems to have a bit about him having played over 200 games at a higher level, and still only 25. Think he will be used as a centre-mid / attacking midfielder as a bit of a foil for Styche. Let's see what he can do, I doubt he is on longer than a one-year deal.

Sounds as though he's had a few problems off the field with mental health & other issues.
Looking at those goals he scored he surely must have some talent?

He'll have Alan White to sort him out, so he should be ok under Tommy Wright's guidance.

So, in a nutshell he's shite.
