you can make a case for Crawley and Morecambe but Stevenage and Macclesfield are both bigger

Not 'far bigger' though. Stevenage were only founded in 1976. By that point we were nearly 90 years old.

They were promoted to the Conference for the first time only 4 years before us.

Which club is bigger? You decide!

nowt against Exeter but why so bitter about Argyle? They are clearly a bigger club, not saying better but certainly bigger than the Grecians.

Just a bunch of jealous little Pikeys who use our name to signify some form of relevance.....sad really

We are the smallest. We've never played at Wembley.

When I first started watching our programmes proudly stated we had won the Sussex professional cup in 1970 and in nearly 125 years of history we have only ever won a senior league twice. The Southern League (have you seen the size of that shield?) and the conference; both while I've been watching.

Now because we are so small I think we should get a thirty point start in the next two seasons.

Casey

Edit: I just remembered. We have won the AGM cup once as well but if I recall correctly FGR have won it twice.

I wouldn't see Carlisle as bigger than Oldham, us, County etc. Although their glory years in the seventies were as good as most at this level. Bradford and Plymouth are big cities with good support, but they have not done any more historically than a number of League One / League Two clubs.

Poor RLC, it hasn't sunk in yet.

Going to get some stick for this but I'm surprised Swindon are rated as one of the bigger teams at this level by some people on here.

They had one season at the top level and it was a total disaster. Swindon to me is just an average division 4 side who will have the odd good spell in the third tier.

Your view is probably skewed by your recent years in non league.

I just think Swindon are very much in the same category of a team like Grimsby or Carlisle. Not bigger or smaller. Just surprised some on here rate Swindon as a big side. I'd be surprised if your average home attendance was much more than 6,000 last season.

6,400 actually. Not too bad considering the poor away followings.

And as for being, largely, a Div 4 club, out of the 92 years being a league club we’ve been in the bottom league for just 7 seasons - under 7%.

As for yourselves, though, 52 years in the league has yielded 14 in the bottom league - over 27%.

That doesn’t even include your sojourn back in non league.

Fair enough, maybe you are a bigger club than I've given you credit for.

I just think Swindon is such a dreary and dismal place that in my mind it is classic division 4, hope to see that 7% figure rise over the next decade!

Anyway, it’s all bollocks. You were a biggish club in L2 and now you’re an average Joe in L1.

Just like we’d be.

Never realised we were such a handy unit of bigness. Everyone seems to be either 'bigger than Carlisle', 'about the same as Carlisle', or 'smaller than Carlisle'.

Maybe we should extend this to creating an actual unit and apply to the International Standards Organisation to be accepted as an international standard. We are of course always 1.0Ca (that's the standard abbreviation).

You could argue that Bradford are something like 2.2Ca in size, but Plymouth a paltry 1.6Ca (never been in the top flight). Swindon might only be 1.1Ca while Crawley are 0.47Ca and Salford are 0.03Ca

Barcelona in contrast could well be over 1kCa, though we lack a good way of measuring quantities that high. Similarly you could look on a club like Carlisle City and say, well they're tiny, certainly less than 100mCa.

On an unrelated note. I never knew Michael McIntyre was an Oxford fan.

I seem to remember weeing on Michael McIntyre’s nan, so that’s definitely true.

I think Orient would be about as close to 1.0ca as another club could get.

Well your travelling support is pretty decent so I guess you are massive.

Grimsby, Carlisle and Swindon for promotion next season. Make League One massive again!
:fl:

You clearly haven't been paying much attention to events down here.

FWIW Grimsby and Swindon seem to have some way to go to be considered promotion contenders too given how both finished last season.

I've always seen Oxford and Swindon as third tier clubs with the occasional foray into the Championship or L2, but their natural home is L1 afaic. A few other clubs that I will always view as L1 irrespective of their current position are Carlisle, P.Vale, Notts, Oldham, Walsall and Col U. I'm not sure where I stand on Bradford (CHP/L1), Crewe (L1/L2) and Plymouth(CHP/L1).

I assume Carlisle are 0.8 on this scale?

Plymouth isn't a big city - medium-sized perhaps, but not big.

Like most settlements in Devon & Cornwall it has no conurbation, or urban sprawl. Consequently it's Urban Area population - the true size of the city as opposed to abitrary city boundaries that in most cases haven't been revised for at least 70 years - is only about 260k. That puts it around 40-45th place - however that's not markedly bigger than many settlements lower down in the list.

The UK has relatively few truly big cities/Urban Areas compared with the size of the national population. London's dominance due to historical and geographical factors - i.e its status as a large port close to mainland Europe - means that the population is radically skewed towards the South-East. IIRC more than a quarter of the UK population lives somewhere in the order of 50 miles from London.
