Seem to be doing their best to throw that away at present.

And yet they got through.
Sore one, will you ever catch a break?

Fair point St.Juste - Celtic, and therefore the entirety of Scottish football, have left me red-faced after taking the huge step of nearly losing to the mighty Hapoel Be'er Sheva F.C. over two legs in the Champions League final pre-tournament qualifiers.

I wish that a) I was more lucky with my timing and b) Scottish football wasn't so goshdarn powerful on the European stage.

Fair play to ya.

Uh-huh, so by "nearly losing" you mean "winning"?

The rest of the post is rather cringeworthy and embarrassing - I'm not quite sure how to respond.

Give it time and I'm sure you'll work it out, you can't seem to help yourself.

Why would I be sore? I wanted them to get through so that Patrick Roberts would get Champions League football.

Strong start for Celtic tonight.

Perhaps that St. Juste wasn't talking out of his sphincter like he usually does.

Fair play.

Maybe Celtic should have signed the world class Balotelli.

Aka Scottish football.

Well said, Dirk!

Celtic aren't as good as Barcelona?

Kolo Toure and Dorus De Vries might struggle against Messi and Neymar?

Colour me shocked.

It wasn't too long ago Barcelona beat Real Madrid 5-1 - they are the greatest side of all time. Predictable, if nonsensical, that people are desperately using this as a stick to beat Scottish football - as if matching Barcelona was ever a realistic goal.

“They scraped through and I thought they’d actually won the thing,” blasted Keane last night on ITV’s Champions League highlights show.

He added: “They’ve got to change the mindset. I’m on about the qualifying games when they were scraping through then celebrating like they’d won the b****y thing.”

Roy Keane is really gunning for St. Juste's boys here.

The irony of course being that Roy Keane is a big Celtic fan, whereas I really don't like Celtic.

What isn't surprising is the latent stupidity of his comments, Celtic will never again with the European Cup, neither will any team outside the top four or five leagues (of the biggest countries in Europe). That's a fact.

The best Celtic and the many others can hope for it the golden ticket to the group stage and it was an excellent performance in Astana that got them there.

And asterisks for bloody....?

And always a fun opportunity to bring up Roy Keans horror debut for Celtic - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_cups/4584934.stm

What an awful player he was for them, and he was drastically overrated in general.

All time? They aren't the best Barcelona side of recent years. Maybe Barca 6-10 years ago, whilst practically inventing a new style of football and forming the core of that dominant Spain side, yes you could seriously talk about the greatest side of all time. And Celtic even managed a shock win and a narrow defeat over a Barca side at the end of that era, so it's possible to not embarrass themselves.

Today's Barca certainly are among the top few sides in Europe and Celtic would never hope to match them, probably expect to lose by a few. But 7-0? Come on, that's a school yard result. I expect my club Bournemouth to be well beaten by Man City tomorrow due to the significant gulf, because as you say matching them is not a realistic goal. But I'll be furious and utterly embarrassed if it's by seven bloody goals!

If people are using the result as a stick to beat Celtic, it's because they bloomin' well deserve it, for the lack of professionalism required to lose by that scoreline.

Tbf I don't think anyone would consider a first choice Barca team beating a mid-table Championship side 7-0 to be anything that out of the ordinary...

That's right. Man, was I utterly embarrassed when my HSV was beaten 9-2 at Bayern in 2013. And in the following season they got a 0-5 (hooray) and next one was an 0-8 and another 0-5 . Fuck it.

Celtic got an embarrassing result, so did Gladbach (they were lucky to lose only 0-4 at ManCity, could've been worse, Shots on Goal was 23-3 ). Let's see how both teams will do in the next matches. Celtic against ManCity and Gladbach against Barca. Both teams are fighting for #3 and Europa League after the Group stages

Except Barcelona played extremely well in that game. And yes, they are one of the greatest club sides of all time (as was their side of a few years ago). Celtic, meanwhile, are worse than a few years ago when they did beat Barcelona (who played very poorly).

It was a mediocre side playing quite badly against a top side playing very well. A poor result absolutely.

Not at all surprised this thread went very quiet after the Man City game. Not bad for a mid table Championship side to be the first team to stop City from winning all season.

Plenty of embarrassed faces in this thread now.

Not often in the Champions League Group Stages.

But keep flogging this dead horse if it makes you feel better.

Quite incredible that Rodger's is talking about winning the league in style - it's October!

To be fair, he's not wrong. Shame that no one could put a proper challenge. Rodger's has really taken them to a different level from Deila.

Yeah I thought he would as he plays systems, something that Deila never really established. They've also signed well with some players of Premier League quality in there and some exciting youth players. He can also tinker a bit with those systems as he'll be less found out up here than in England; and I think they'll be a good team to watch and fairly dominant under him during his tenure.

You're right, he's made some shrewd purchases without rocking the boat too much.

Like Deila though, I think he'll eventually hit that ceiling, ironically because of the speed of his success. Too good for the SPL, but unlikely to make inroads into Europe.

(Maybe I should hope he does so well that he's tempted back to England...?)

He'll probably be there for three seasons then be tempted by a move back to a PL side, and Moyes will come in giving Rangers a great shot at getting back up there once more. ;)
