Bootham Crescent - York City Ground Guide

How Easy Was The Ground to Get To (from the station, by car, etc)

A traditional city centre ground, about 20 minutes walk from the station. By car all roads into York lead to the inner ring road (A1036) and the ground is just off the North West corner of that (A19 towards Thirsk) then Bootham Crescent (road name) is on the right.

If Applicable, How is Parking Near The Ground?

Didn't park but there seemed plenty of street parking around, or there was a council car park just off the main road by the traffic lights.

Based on Where You Were Sat, How Was the View?

An old school open terrace behind the goal, extremely close to the action, but steep enough for a decent view. There was also a small seated section in the corner.

How Were The Stewards on The Day?

Pleasant enough, didn't notice them at all which I guess is a good thing. They were letting people upgrade to the seated area for £1 (although I think that is a standard thing) which plenty of fans took up at half time due to the delightful Yorkshire weather.

If You Ate at The Ground, How Would You Rate the Food?

Had a meat and potato pie, nothing exceptional but better than the standard Pukka fare.

How Was The Atmosphere At The Ground, From Both Sets of Supporters? Does the Stadium Hold the Noise?

Due to being an open terrace I doubt the noise made in the away was particularly loud to the home fans. The York fans weren't the most vociferous (although I appreciate Yeovil on a Tuesday night is not the biggest draw), but when they did make some noise the ground held it well.

How Are the Pubs and Local Attractions in The Local Area?

Where to start! Every other building inside the walls seems to be a pub. York Brewery have a couple - including the Three-Legged mare where I had a few enjoyable pre-match ales. However, if you are wanting to watch Sky/BT pre-game there seem to be very few in the city centre that show it. The railway museum, walls and minster are all well worth a visit, and there are almost endless options for pub crawls so it's definitely worth making a weekend of it.

Overall Score Out of 10?

Traditional ground, fantastic city 9/10

Only been by train, the ground is about a 20 minute walk through the city from the station.

I was in the end, and being an uncovered terrace, there is nothing obscuring your view!

How Were The Stewards on The Day?
No problem at all

If You Ate at The Ground, How Would You Rate the Food?
Ate in the city

Home fans were disappointing, and the fact that the away end is uncovered, even a boisterous away following like this one couldnt really make much noise.

Bit biased, as York is one of my favourite UK cities. Anything you want can be found in the city centre, so make a day or a weekend of it, especially if you are lucky enough to be playing there at a nice time of year.

Showings its age and has the worst toilets in the Football League, but they just make them like this anymore.
8/10

The ground is an easy 20 minute walk from the station, you can walk along the city walls and across the river on your way there!

The Prostate Cancer stand is an uncovered end terrace. The terrace steps are quite substantial and the banking is of a reasonable height so you can get a decent view. For an extra £1, you can transfer to a section of the seated Popular side. This is an converted terrace and doesn't look that great in terms of the rake of the seating or the legroom.
Bootham Crescent is an ageing ground and the club hasn't appeared to spend much money recently on maintaining it, which is understandable given the move to the new ground. I haven't seen toilets like that at a football ground for a couple of decades! However, the setting of the ground in quite a nice residential area of the city is lovely and makes it feel like a proper football day out.
Actually, the ground reminds me of how a 4th division ground would be like back in the 80s/early 90s with its attendant advantages and disadvantages. Still far preferable to Northampton's ground.
How Were The Stewards on The Day?
Unobtrusive, the way they're supposed to be.

Why eat in the ground when there's so many options nearby?

Despite York's perilous position, sometimes the atmosphere was more akin to that of a pre-season friendly. Moreover, as our numbers weren't that great on an uncovered terrace we couldn't make much noise. Unless there's a very big away following, the away fans and home fans are not in close proximity to each other and the atmosphere suffers as a result. However, the ground can hold a decent atmosphere when the home fans responded to York's better moments.

It's York! It's one of the best days out you can have going to a football match in England
Overall Score Out of 10?
The ground is decrepit but it's lovable and it's a proper football day out. 9/10
