Reading talk of Hoddle being in with a shout again. Surely not, although he couldn't do any worse than Hodgson. Was decent back in the 90s before he was sacked but I'm not sure he has what it takes these days after being out of any form of management for a decade.

The FA are a bunch of spineless fuckers, whoever they bring in won't be rocking any boats and therefore we'll likely end up with a repeat of the last 4 years.

Gareth Southgate being favourite to succeed Roy Hodgson as England manager is "scary", says Harry Redknapp.

Hodgson resigned on Monday after England were knocked out of Euro 2016 in the last 16 by minnows Iceland.

But Redknapp said Southgate was only seen as a favourite for the job because he had won a "second-rate tournament" with England's Under-21s in Toulon.

"Why should he get it in front of Steve Bruce and Sam Allardyce, who are proven managers?" asked the former QPR boss.

When it was suggested that Southgate knew the way the Football Association worked as well as the English "system", Redknapp responded: "Knows what system? The losing system? He knows the losing formula?

You can always rely on old motormouth to pop up when there's something to be said. Got a point about Southgate though, certainly wouldn't be my first choice. Then again, neither would Bruce or Allardyce. If an English manage is required, Eddie Howe is surely the choice.

Eddie Howe wouldn't get the respect of the top players unfortunately. I also don't think the job can be done by a foreigner unless they've got a grasp of the British psyche and everything that goes with it. It also can't be someone too old or out of touch with the youth, if you have watched instagram/snapchat video's you can see the utter piss in which Hodgson was treated, like an over the hill school teacher who can't relate to his pupils. It's gotta be a man of stature, a man who won't tolerate shite but also someone who has a proven record of respect from his players. There is only one man for the job, that man being Big Sam.

The FA would be wise to crawl, obsequiously, to crawl to the door of Arsene Wenger and beg.

Of course, if the plan is to staff the next England team with Kevin Davies, Emile Heskey, Joey Barton, Neil Ruddock, and half a dozen MMA fighters, by all means offer the job to Sam Allardyce.

Why not give Jurgen Klinsmann a go, was very impressed with the work rate and passion USA provided in the 2014 world cup under him.

Guardiola. Sure everyone wants the England job

Him and Pep are miles apart in stature??

Yeah it's a long shot, but worth enquiring imo, especially is there's no real quality candidates.

He might be the next Pep. They are about as far apart in stature as Pochettino is with anyone who will bother applying for the England job. Why would he leave a Spurs side he almost turned into Premier League champions? He'll probably be the Real Madrid manager within the next few seasons.

Howe would be a coup, that's who you should be aiming for. World class managers rarely bother with International management any more. I can only think of Antonio Conte and he is managing his home nation as an intense patriot.

Always worth a punt I guess.

I've said for years the problem with English football is the standard of coaching.

Yes there maybe some good coaches in the football league, maybe Lee Johnson is a good coach for example and I'm sure there are a lot in the premier league in back room staff but they won't be given a chance as everyone wants a foreign manager because it's trendy, even clubs likes Port Vale are doing it and their fans love it even though that Ribeiro bloke doesn't have a good record.

The reason English coaches don't get much of a chance abroad isn't because they don't want it, it's because teams in Germany and Spain would rather bring their own coaches theoigh, Dortmund appointed from within and appointed a manager no one ever heard of and Hoffenheim even appointed a 29 year old.

But as I said that will never happen over here, foreign owners don't give a shit about English coaches, and why should they. And then the foreign coaches don't care about English players.

The FA now have a duty to make a statement, we aren't going to get a big name like Poch, Billic etc, we have good coaches in the Prem like Howe, who won't take it and Allardyce, who I would be happy with. Other than that there's nothing, get a good coach in, who they have faith in, whether that's Gary Neville, Alan Shearer or Gareth Southgate, let them do the job like Germany did with Low, stick with them and see where it takes it. Either that or sort out the Premier league.

I see that. Also says a lot of the players don't want him, obviously getting feedback from the Everton players.

Sent a shiver down my spine that's for sure.

Big Sam is definitely my first-choice. Wenger, Howe and Poch will not want the job, the FA won't want Neville, Southgate is sadly a possibility, and I don't think there is anyone else who might take the role tbh. Big Sam would be my choice; but I think the FA will choose Southgate,

Chucking a few thoughts into the thought hat

Sean Dyche - Worked miracles at Burnley, has a clear way of playing. Classic English 442 with big man little man, teams are always committed and can motivate a bunch of players
Eddie Howe - A more modern manager rather than the classic blood and thunder kick and rush, clearly a very talented manager but I don't know whether he would leave, he is very much in his comfort zone at Bournemouth
Nigel Pearson - Can get his team up for a fight and think he would get a great team spirit going, think he's the sort that would relish the criticism that comes with England manager and use it as motivation a us against the world sort of way
Alan Pardew - Probably the most obvious choice if you are going English, not a bad manager but I'm not a massive fan. Would barely be able to fit out the door with the size of his head
Chris Hughton - A manager I have always rated, done a good job at every club he has been at imo. Badly treated at Norwich
Tim Sherwood - Not much experience but don't think you can judge him on his spell at Villa as that was a club in crisis. Gives youth a good chance (would have gave Rashford and Barkley a proper chance at this tournament) straight talking and strong enough to not let the media get to him. Would take no bs from the FA
Mark Warburton - Done an incredible job at Brentford, don't follow Scottish football but from a distance looks like he has continued his good work at Rangers

Some non english options
Rafa Benitez - Could surely be tempted away from championship Newcastle and has a reputation as one of the best managers in world football
Arsene Wenger - His time at Arsenal is surely coming to an end, at his age a part time gig with England may suit him. Has a philosophy which would go down well but over the last 10 years has struggled to win trophies which is what it is all about
Manuel Pellegrini - Similar in many ways to his management style as Wenger, right age for an international manager and available
Roberto Martinez - One of the most overrated managers imo, don't want him but got a horrible feeling he may be in the frame.

Some other names just to throw out there
Southgate to make the step up from U21s, Big Sam, Louis Van Gaal, Steve Bruce, Laurent Blanc just left PSG, Slaven Bilic, Glenn Hoddle, Harry Redknapp, Frank De Boer, Guus Hiddink

Not saying I want these, tried to avoid unrealistic names and I realise some people may think the names I have mentioned are nonsense but just trying to stir up some thoughts and debate.

I don't know what to say if Southgate gets it. You know following our clubs when you got a manager who's so shit there is just no going back from whether he wins a couple or not and you end up wanting to lose the game to get rid? That will be me with England.

Give it Big Sam

Despite the talent pool being so low I prefer an Englishman in charge. The best English manager out there right now is Big Sam and he's my choice. On the pitch, he'd sort out our defence get us organised and ensure that performances like yesterday don't ever happen again. Off the pitch he wouldn't stand for any rubbish from the players, he'd call players up on merit and tell things like they are. He commands respect and the ridicule given to him from football fans is plainly unfair. I like Eddie Howe but it's to early for him right now. There are some big egos in that dressing room and unlike Big Sam, Howe would lose them in a flash if things started going wrong. It could ruin his career at such a young age. Pardew in my opinion is a rank bad manager and Southgate would just be another FA puppet.

If we do go foreign again however, I'd offer it to Bilic or Ranieri. Whether either of them would take it or not is another matter.

I'd like Eddie Howe if we want someone young and progressive, and I'd say he's probably best suited to this bunch of players. That being said, however, it's too soon for him (which contradicts my point about wanting someone young and progressive I know), I just fear we'd ruin him.

On the flip side, I'd take Big Sam. He knows how to set a team up, instil confidence into players and he wouldn't take any shit from any of them - plus he's earned his chance. I just don't think the FA would appoint a manager like him, who yannow, one isn't fashionable, and two speaks his mind. Otherwise, Pardew (just imagine) or even Redknapp if we're looking at English managers.

I stress that these are suggestions based on what we've got, rather than living in an ideal world.

Having a think about it I'd go for Allardyce too. He knows how to set a team up and let attacking talents flourish. We need to go back to basics and play in a way that suits the young players we've got and us as a football nation, direct, high tempo and solid at the back. But it'll probably go to Southgate and we'll play a possession game that we're shit at.

I don't know if I could bear seeing Arsene putting up with the press and fans on a World Cup tour. He wouldn't want the job anyway.

Why does the manager need to be English? Our managers are objectively shit. We should appoint someone who has successful international experience, gets his teams playing with a strong identity, and has that mad "IT IS OUR DESTINY TO WIN!" attitude. I would take Bilic.

Not a month after taking the Celtic job

Would prefer Allerdyce or 'Arry to Southgate or Pardew

The FA will probably go for the easy option and appoint Southgate as they will be pushed into appointing an Englishman by the media whilst somebody like Big Sam won't fit their profile even though he probably would be a good option..

When somebody like Redknapp brings up Tim Sherwood you do fear for the quality of the potential candidates..

I dunno, think he'd fancy a crack at it. He's only got a rolling contract too.

Think he'd be a good choice. Works well with young players, and has improved players in past. If the FA are looking for a man who'll revamp the coaching too, they aren't going to appoint a Pardew or Allardyce.

I'm not sure Howe would neccesarily refuse it. The England job doesn't present itself very often and next time it does he could be further down a pecking order if there are bigger names available or there's an emerging English coach making a name for himself.

I'd like to see Big Sam apply his Real Madrid theory though. We've not got the galacticos but he's not going to be expected to win the... well anything really. People will complain about his brand of football. But at least he's got a brand.

The current rumour seems to be Southgate as interim until Wenger finishes his Arsenal contract. I'm not sure Arsene would work unless you can get some ex-players and big characters in there with him, because if mental weakness was our problem then I don't see him as the man to instil the right mentality in the squad.

If Southgate is going to be interim for a year he might as well get it full time. Not that I want either.
