Horrible news. Ajax played a friendly against Werder Bremen in Austria where this happened. Heart rhythm problems and too long without oxygen for the brain.
First it was said that he will recover and that his heart is functioning normal and today now this. 20 years old, that's tragic.

How major is this brain damage? Like, can he function?
Read the link. Says that his brain function is nil. With no brain function and no chance of recovery, there seems little point of keeping him on permanent life support. I reckon the family will turn his life support machine off. Terrible thing to contemplate.

Does it?

The club statement said the chances of recovery from the damage is nil.

It added: "The diagnosis was made that a lot of [his] brain is not functioning. All this probably occurred due to a lack of oxygen supply."

Yeah, it doesn't say he's braindead. He has severe and permanent brain damage.
