We also made attempts to get Tubbs and Mills that summer but Crawley beat us to them. I didn't realise that the Tubbs offer was rejected but Crawley must have been willing to match whatever Luton were likely to offer him in wages, which I'm guessing was high.

Michel Kuipers - Was getting on a bit but was a L1 regular for Brighton.

If I remember, they also paid undisclosed fees for players such as John Dempster from Kettering and McFadzean from Alfreton, who were both highly rated.

Richard Brodie, also, when he was good joined Crawley from York for not sure how much but think it was substantial.

They got a guy called Willie Gibson from Scotland who I'm assuming was paid well or why else would he move from Scotland to Crawley.

I'm going on vague memories and Wikipedia, but I thought Crawley paid quite a lot that season.

The Radford investment started more in 2011-2012. 2010-2011 we got to the FA Trophy final but had a very slim budget under Duncan Russell (now deceased). I think at this stage we were buying/involved in a legal dispute over Field Mill so the Radford money was going on that.

FWIW the word at the time if I recall, us not signing Tubbs was a location thing for him. They also offered more money up front to Salisbury as well I think.

I think the whole problem with all this is the fact they have picked a football club as a hobby for their own personal interest. They could not give a shit about Salford.
Its like someone buying a house to do Up. Spunking money on it to sell it again and make a fortune. No emotion in it.
Its the morals behind it all. A football club is not a toy. It's part of every community no matter how small it is.
When they get bored, because the club will plateau.. (prob league 1) they will walk away. The crowds will not increase substantially and will still be less than Bury and Rochdale..
And to compound the whole thing, is the insufferable e media and their nostalgic man United love in. It really gets on your wick.
I personally hope it all implodes.

We definitely spunked loads of dosh that season. Torres was the big transfer fee with rumours of 100k. Brodie was odd, undisclosed with York saying it was 250k but people in the know at ours saying it was less than Tubbs' 60k.

The wages were not as high as people think. Ben Smith who played most of that season stated, in his book (from memory) that he was on £658 a week. An odd figure that had something to do with amalgamating his bonus payments into his basic salary as the taxman was not happy about it. It's high but not so far ahead.

Anyroad, Salford's?

Casey

Ben Smith was almost certainly not close to the same wage as others mentioned.

League One is going to be a graveyard of poorly run big clubs and a haven for hobby clubs like FGR, Fylde, Salford, Fleetwood and Forest Green soon as the rest of us on a budget can't keep up with the Joneses.

Soon, League Two will be as good as it gets for a lot of our clubs UNLESS significant changes to football are made. And more historic clubs will face the same fates as Wrexham and Stockport who are rotting in non league.

With all due respect FGR had a decent fanbase before Dale Vince took over.

We have loud passionate away support which nether of those other so called hobby clubs can claim, and I would not be surprised if our budget now is similar to Crewe's. It is not a big budget for league 2 believe me.

I know people live to bundle us with those other clubs you mentioned, but we are different.

fleet wood used to get about 150 watching on a good day as did Salford and Fylde, before spending loads of money and finding fans.

FGR at least used to 1,000 home fans before Vince and we were generally rubbish.

To be fair Crawley and FGR were much more substantial clubs in comparison to Salford, Fleetwood etc before the money.

Still tinpot though.

Is this the first club promoted to the Football League who have never had any representation on here (and I know that there was a Hammie on here for 5 seconds)?

The irony is the Neville brothers are actually from Bury and their late father was the football in the community guy at Bury. So as you say mate why didn't they pump their hometown team instead of this bloody vanity project.
It's even worse than that. Their father wasn't just the football in the community guy at Bury - at one point he was an effing director and even spearheaded the "Save Our Shakers" campaign during one of Bury's serial financial crises.

Oh - and his mum was Bury General Manager AND club secretary!

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neville_Neville

Of course this ruthlessly exposes the media spin and gullible EPL fans' ridiculous defence of born-and-bred Buryite Neville on the grounds that this is a case of "local Salford boy done good helps his local team and what could possibly be wrong with that?"

As someone correctly said none of the Farce of 92 give a shit about Salford. The club was simply the perfect Trojan Horse - a small fanbase that can easily be circumvented, owned its ground, located in a metropolitan area which is also home to the Peter Lim/Farce of 92 property development empire (Moor Lane will be housing in ten years) and close to their beloved MUFC and their homes (Beckham & Lim excepted).

Last time I looked Bury were in the shit again and could do with some financial help to keep them alive, let alone buy their way into the Premier League. Similarly I'm sure Oldham could do with the stupid money ploughed into Salford - isn't Scholes suppised to be an Oldham fan?

In the interests of balance it seems Giggs grew up In Salford & his brother managed them once, so if you overlook the fact that he never previously showed any interest in Salford even when his brother was there, you could make the "local boy done good" argument in his case. Not for the rest though - and Neville is the figurehead of this farce.

You're probably correct, they don't give a shit about Salford, but it's up to them what they do with their own money. Bury and Oldham are rivals right? If the Neville's are affiliated to Bury and Scholes to Oldham, maybe they decided to steer clear of either of these two rather than picking one??

I know it's a slightly different subject but I can remember on the old forum all the posts during the MK takeover of Wimbledon. The feeling Wimbledon's league place had been stolen and that Winkelman had bought his league position. One of things that was often said, why didn't he go and buy MK City and build them up, pump money into them and earn their Football League place the correct way. This is what the guys at Salford have effectively done and they're being crucified for it.

Isn't one of the stands at Gigg Lane called the Neville Neville stand?

Just found this post from an old Salford fan on Darlo's forum, which supports the idea that the old support has at least in part been replaced, just like the Class of 92 replaced a lot of òther things.

The club is a franchise.

https://darlofc.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=27450#p352598

"I'm bitterly disappointed to admit that we lost a number of regular supporters following the Class of 92's takeover. The reasons cited for this varied from "It's no longer non-league football", "We've changed our colours from tangerine to red", "I'm not watching a team managed by Manchester United players", "We've lost our identity", "We're going to be a Manchester United feeder team" and so on.

I was vehemently against the colour change and made my position clear in no uncertain terms but we're no Cardiff City. Meaning that we didn't have enough numbers to mount large scale protests. Having said that I've since come to terms with this change as at the end of the day it's still my team and it's still Salford City in name. Fortunately the rumours surrounding a name change thankfully proved to be completely unfounded.

It does disappoint me that we've lost some of our more 'passionate' fans as they were also some of the more vocal supporters that made for a great atmosphere at Moor lane which is certainly nowhere as good as it has been in recent seasons."

They'll never be as hated as us, but I am absolutely loving this thread.
I hate them more.

I don't agree with what happened to Wimbledon, but at least the damage was limited to one club. If the Salford b*llocks is accepted and spreads there are serious dangers for a host of lower-league clubs who don't want to be ruled by rich men or who can't find wealthy owners..

Salford fan here. Why I support them I posted on NL forum. No need to justify again. Here in peace.. Yes we've had money pumped in but no one would say no to that.

Looking forward to some cracking games. We'll be happy just to be mid table with a couple of signings, defo need improving at the back. Grow the support base and just enjoy.

For the umpteenth time - many of us would say no to that. I would hate my club to become a Salford.

Apart from the fact that farcical games of "Our Billionaire is Bigger Than Your Billionaire" and the footballing equivalent of buying your doctoral thesis off the internet repel me, I value fan-ownership too much. Wimbledon fans actually voted down a takeover by a wealthy man, so don't tar us all with the Salford brush.

When the money came in. I can't afford Prem football really so I thought this was a good project and yeah yeah before you start I'm a United fan (now just on telly) but needed a fix and to be fair, good ticket deals for me and the twins to get there. Thoroughly enjoy going. Yes we have a lot of money but the football is entertaining so we didn't stop going.

was never really interested in that, i'm not so much against the corporate side which they are I believe and why they created the club. it's not my neck of the woods either. Me going to Salford isn't a protest vote, it is actually because I don't have the cash to go to United any more. And with 6 year olds twins, football mad, it's the most affordable option. Must say I don't regret it
