So you've opened the links, but haven't read them - clearly.

And clearly St Juste knows more than factual evidence. Why wouldn't he?

See ya.

Yes, they absolutely didn't say:

"Croatia has as much immigration from surrounding countries as Scotland has - so that’s a rubbish answer as well, sorry."

The crux of your argument, and one you absolutely failed to provide any evidence for.

Anyway, it's interesting that after England fans and media humbly claiming the 'it's coming home' was all a bit of a joke they are now writing articles about how they can win Euro 2020.

They beat a nation less of a tenth of their size, at home, with two late goals. They also beat Spain away, by far their best result in 20 years.

Is anyone surprised? This cycle will continue unabated for decades to come. It seems to be becoming a bit more blatant recently. Their fans and media will buy the hype hook, line and sinker and when it all goes wrong will display Trump level delusion in claiming they were all joking anyway, and of course we know Lingard and Rashford are rubbish really.

Like I said, I'm done repeating myself to you as you clearly can't/don't/won't read.

I said it during the world cup and I'll say it again:

I can imagine the headlines;

"Outrage in St. Mirren as fans hear opposing team sing, 'We're by far the greatest team the world has ever seen' - however, evidence proves otherwise"

Did you notice England beating the US mate?

How would the response to that be considered "outrage"?

Not even sure you know where you're going with that....

Did you notice England beating the US mate?

No. Relevance?

Well I think it's pretty obvious to 99%, but I'll explain it for you:

Song: We're by far the greatest team the world has ever seen. -- It's a song. A song we like to sing. Does it mean its true? No. Does it mean that the team is being arrogant in thinking they're the best team the world has ever seen? No.

Song: It's coming home. -- It's a song. A song we like to sing. Does it mean its true? No. Does it mean that the team is being arrogant in thinking they will win the World Cup? No.

If you can't how it's the same, then there isn't much hope for you fella.

But maybe you'd like to give us a long winded definition of how you understand English football fans, more than we understand ourselves - I'm sure in your mind, you feel you do.

Right, so if we assume that is the case, there must be loads of other examples of similar or identical songs sung by other nations / clubs?

By far the greatest team....etc. is sung by fans of lower league clubs. Of course it isn't true, it's not meant to be.

England fans started signing "It's coming home" in the streets, and putting it back on the charts, only when they reached the knockout stages, right?

And you really don't see the difference?

That and of course the myriad of articles, pundit pronouncements etc, about how it's coming home (not in song version).

To claim afterwards it was all a bit of joke, and nobody really believed England were likely to win, was an outrageous distortion of what happened. As I said - a Trumpian level of delusion.

Yes, there are.

Only of lower league clubs? Jesus, do you know anything about football? Arsenal sing it all the time, as an example.

I can't say when it came in the charts, I personally don't look at the UK charts - but lets say it was, again - I don't see the problem. Singing songs with your mates having a laugh and playing a song means you're having a good time.

I see there is a difference, but to actually believe that it's because of pure arrogance that we thought we were going to win it, is even worse.

Get over it mate, it's a song, people were enjoying themselves. Maybe one day if Scotland ever qualify for a tournament, you'll understand what it's like to have fun with your fellow countrymen

Yep. Not sure if this Netherlands resurgence is another stellar generation coming through or not. I mean, you can't argue with their results, beating Germany and France at home, drawing with Germany after being 2-0 down, only just losing to France. Then there was the friendly draw with Belgium.

They also have some good players coming through by the looks of it. I'm sure I've seen Frenkie de Jong's name pop up in transfer talks. Wijnaldum, Strootman, Depay and of course, plenty of talent in defence. Be a good marker for both teams and how good they are.

Far as I can recall, it started doing the rounds in the hours and days after we smashed the mighty Panama.

Which incidentally was probably the most pure fun I've had supporting England, bar perhaps the second half v Germany in 2001. Qualification from the group confirmed within half an hour, no stress, nice goals, beautiful hot sunny day, BBQs in every back garden and pub beer garden. But I'm sure it doesn't need clarifying that beating Panama was not a sure sign that winning the World Cup had really just become inevitable.

Now if the Nations League has a home (?) - it's obviously England. And it's coming....

Yep, I'm in two minds over the NL side.

The impression I get is that they have they overall better squad right now, but they can't match our togetherness. (when was the last time we were able to say that?!)

Tbh, I view this nations league a little like the Carling Cup. It's only great if you win it. Otherwise, I don't really mind. I'd love to win it for some success for our youngsters, but then we're qualified having played not half of our qualifiers games. So then I get the feeling we wont be properly prepared for the Euros if that is the case, which I certainly don't want.

Then I'm thinking that I also don't want our boys to lose a final, because thats never good.

So I guess the best thing is to lose to the NL?

I doubt anyone will truly care if we don't beat the Netherlands or Portugal/Switzerland, but given the expectations that are now raised, I think there will be a bit of pressure on the team to perform.

I find it a bit odd that this game will be played in a 30,000 stadium in Guimaraes. Reckon the demand will far exceed the capacity, especially once corporate hand outs have knocked down each allocation.

Why didn't Benfica and/or Sporting's stadiums get used instead?

Eh, I didn't say it was sang exclusively by lower league fans (lots of teams sing it) but that was to emphasize it was being sung in cases where it demonstrably wasn't true. Do keep up.

Scotland have qualified for plenty of international tournaments..

But good to know you've abandoned the premise it was all just a bit of a joke and nobody took it seriously. That clearly was not the case. People, fans and media, bought into the hype, were stung by it, and resorted to a desperate delusion that they were joking all along.

It fools nobody.

And it will happen again. And again.

Until then I'll wait for the Barnet article on "Are we the greatest team in the world - probably" to fully put your bed your awful comparison.

Far as I can recall, it started doing the rounds in the hours and days after we smashed the mighty Panama.

I don't mind people having fun for football (so long as you are not destroying ambulances....) but to claim afterwards it was all a big inside joke everyone in the country was in on?

In these days of fake news and utter falsehoods gaining traction it was up there with amongst the most deluded. Outrageous that it wasn't challenged more.

Just so we have this straight - you're asserting that we English were serious about winning the World Cup off the back of beating Panama? Yes, No?

Some absolutely were yes.

And their numbers increased as they cycled through the rounds.

Didn't some other nations have an issue with the song and its arrogance as well? Can see a future of England playing it the first half of another 4-1 drubbing to Germany.

A more reasonable reaction would have been that many people bought into the hype, but we clearly weren't good enough in the end and oh well. Not to turn out and say "we was only joking!!111"

Well, I dunno where we can go from here. You talk about perpetuating falsehoods and delusions...that to my mind is exactly what you're trying to do over this. I guess we're not going to agree, and nether of us can claim to know for sure the thoughts and feelings of millions of people. Just as I can't know for sure whether you genuinely believe what you're asserting, or whether you're just arguing it simply to be contrary.

You've quoted 'he knows' even though it wasn't said.

But anyway, yes, I can state with absolute confidence that, no, not everyone was joking and, yes, people did believe that England were going to win the world cup.

And yes the arrogant song annoyed other nations.

And yes, when asked to provide an equivalent at club or international level you were unable to do so.

It's the equivalent of singing "Champions" when you are at GW12 (and didn't win last year) or in the QF of a cup. Does anyone ever do this?

No, just one nation, renowned for their misplaced arrogance.

Just to be clear, you actually buy this "it was all a joke" narrative?

It's one thing to hide your embarrassment from outsiders, but to convince yourself that "nah I never thought we would win really. Nobody else did either. We were just being ironic with that song. Everyone was. Even when they were saying it and writing about it. It was one big national joke that everyone in the country was in on"?

No wonder people like Duterte, Bolsonaro and Trump get elected. Creating myths, and getting them believed, is easy even in countries with strong national institutions.

“ - that is a quote mark.

I put ‘he knows’ so that you could understand the context that I wasn’t posting talking about myself, I didn’t want to confuse you but clearly by simplifying it for you, its too advanced for you to understand.

I didn’t reply because I’ve been round and round with you for the last month. You don’t read any posts and spout the same shit back no matter what you say.

Mark is obviously much smarter than I am as he’s spotted that after 2 of your posts and basically tried calling it a day - to agree to disagree, yet you’ve gone again and brought up the same post/point you made before. You have the obsession of going round and round in circles without actually discussing anything.

A post that says nothing and doesn't deal with any issue at hand, nor correct the falsehoods you have made earlier.

Why bother?

Also both " and ' can be used as quote marks in the English language.

Finally! Now you understand what it’s like speaking with you!

It’s fantstically ironic isn’t it?

How does it make you feel when someone ignores what you say, and argues another point to back up how you’re wrong?

PS, they can be, but the word ‘right’ can also be used to mean he direction or to confirm if something is correct. It’s about context, I guess you didn’t understand.

Super_horns : I applaud you that you've taken the brave step to bring this thread back to topic. Unfortunately not for long though ;)

The Dutch for you. Hope you'll smash them. Take care of VVD though. This bugger has scored in both games against us, especially his 2-2 in the last minute a few weeks ago still hurts (although it wasn't an important match anymore for us for the standings (but for the morale though) . It was sweet nonetheless seeing the Dutch helpless for nearly 85 minutes and brutal to see them score twice in 5 minutes. So, bring them down, England!

Dirk mate....every thread would remain, more or less, on topic if they were not derailed by the forum clown whose CV boasts Controversial Attention seeker, ignorance of the facts, egotist extraordinaire. I've more or less refrained from commenting on this thread because International football does little for me and there is a whole host of guys who know more about than me......but as was evident during the World Cup, this fucking total arsehole does his best to deride the whole thread simply down to his anti-Englishness. The guy, if you actually read his posts in depth and accurately, is a liar (proven) and attention seeker. PS his record arguing with me is pitiful....toys off a baby!.....:cool1:

Fuck me, have I wandered into some sort of Twilight zone here?

I’ve barely looked in this forum since the World Cup and can see that St Juste is still boring everyone with the same shit he was 5 months ago!

How can you be so upset over a song written by two comedians and sung ironically by drunken football fans?

Tragic.

Well the US is of bigger size than England (y'know, just a little bit). So that would make England's feat greater by beating a country the size of the US.

(By your ridiculous, base-everything-on-population piece of shit standards.)

So are you going to post something constructive or not? That's two complete wastes.

That's because like you they are all wet fish that need to liven up a bit and not take everything seriously for once.

Yeah, they should just accept people having a laugh at them arrogantly getting carried away, then feeling embarrassed about it.

Tragic.

I'm not upset about, just astounded at the level of delusion that surrounds it. If people admitted that they got carried away, came across as arrogant, and failed in the end, it would be fine. It happens.

Trying to convince people it was all a joke? It's pathetic and deserves to be pointed out as such.

Well the US is of bigger size than England (y'know, just a little bit). So that would make England's feat greater by beating a country the size of the US.

(By your ridiculous, base-everything-on-population piece of shit standards.)

You've got to be kidding me?

At least you didn't use China or India.....

I can't emphasize how many times I have stated the following, it will appear in at least a third of the posts I make so to willfully distort it is on you.

"Population is relevant as a comparison between two (or more) nations with a similar level of interest in football. On it's on it means absolutely nothing".

To a certain extent, a big nation with a middling or low interest in football (e.g. India) is still likely to be far better than a football mad nation of 30,000 people but it's a nuance I really don't expect Mistermagic to understand.

More people playing football = more potential professionals footballs.

An incredibly simple equation, one people on here fall over themselves to distort and get wrong.
